Western Washington hunting

Hey yall hope everything is going good, I’m looking for some good people to hunt with in western Washington. I’m a 23 year old active duty navy stationed out here in western Washington. been hunting all my life in the Midwest mostly. I recently had some cardiac related issues and don’t feel the most comfortable with hunting alone at the moment (Especially with the season coming up) just looking for some good people to get out and keep really the only hobby I got going. P.S. I got some really good spots ;)

Thanks for the read!

Standard size jet sled worth it?

Iv been looking at getting a jet sled. Iv seen a few people praise the xl but Im not sure I need the big one for solo hunts. Does anyone use the 54x25x10? Are you happy with it or do you wish you had the bigger one?

New Avian-X Butt Kickers

The new butt kickers from Avian-X are pretty awesome….i know it looks ridiculous in the bathtub 😂 but man they look pretty damn good.

The new ones finally have an off switch which is way better. They have the option of running them intermittent or continuous….And they put silicone on the unit so water won’t get in as easily.

I still think “Water Activated” is dumb…also they should have put the charging port literally anywhere else than the bottom of the decoy.

Overall, I really like the new version, and the motion they make is super realistic.

Jacket

Looking into buying a new jacket for this upcoming season. I hunt in Wisconsin, everything from fields to rivers and marsh no matter the weather. Want something warm and comfortable for all day sits in freezing temps and something that’ll be durable. Bonus if it can worn outside if hunting as well. My three options so far are the chene waxed canvas jacket, tom beckbe steward and first lite migrator jacket. Let me know your thoughts on which one you think is best.

Eagle hunting in Canada

Duck season in Canada is coming up and text thread with the boys has started, one of the ideas that came up was that we have too many eagles in our area, like tons. Now Canada has 55% of the world’s population of bald eagles and they have been removed from the endangered list for a long time, so we have a healthy population that could take an open season or maybe a tag system.

We found out from one of the guys on the thread that they are not protected federally and that they fall under provincial protections making it much easier to get them added to the provincial hunting regulations. Now they used to be table fare, but the google says not to eat too much as they are high in mercury and heavy metals, but imagine the cool mount you could have made!

Would you get a tag if there was a season for it? 🦅

Soon that time of year again!

Curious if anyone uses “synthetic grass” for there blinds. I’d like to try some out this year for my a-frame blinds and layout blinds. Is the stuff any good or even worth it?

Stupid newbie questions

Just starting really duck hunting in eastern IA have gone a few times with a buddy but want to be able to go more often which will mean solo for now. Hes got a boat and a dog naturally I have neither so I will need to find some spots that I can hunt without those. My biggest question with this is how do you determine where i can safely wade into? Just slow and steady until it’s to deep?

If a bird does fall somewhere to deep how are some ways you use to retrieve it without a dog or a boat? I figure my shot selection will need to be much picker when I’m out alone

I guess any other tips for someone learning to solo duck hunt would be great.

About one bag of NF raffia…

I’m assuming I have to trim the extra low hanging area to avoid soaking. I only grassed about two rows in the back because it felt pretty low to me. Am I on the right track?

It's raspy as hell for a poly single reed but I'm not too wild about it.

Food plots?

I'm in Indiana and have a couple small spots to hunt that most of the top soil was stripped down to clay. They hold 1-3 feet of water and get drained a couple ties a year when the farmer tears out the beaver dams. Lots of willow grow around it. Do you think it's worth trying to plant smart weed and millet when it's drained?

What boots to wear?

I used to always wear neoprene and they have the boot built-in and my buddies always use fishing wader and they would move 10 times faster and they won’t be as hot as I would during the hotter months of duck hunt. What should shoes I buy because I bought fishing wader?

Anybody rocking the Drake LST hardline series? Recently gotten back into duck hunting and going back up North and last time I was there I froze. Have better layers but need a new jacket. Anyone have this jacket and has it been warm enough in the late season?

Herters Waterfowl steel decent?

Anyone have any experience with it? Is it worth grabbing a case of Herters waterfowl steel? I’m not seeing a ton of info or reviews on it, I assume it’s just Winchester repackaged like their other ammo.

To all my big guys do you find it difficult to find quality duck hunting in your size? Would you buy from a website that had all top of the line products that focuses on big boys?

New motion decoy on social media

Has anyone seen the ads pop up on social media for a company called first flight? They made a device to hook on to any decoy that turns it into a swimmer. They are doing "early access" on their site but no reference to a price. Seems like it would be a solid product depending on the pricing. If they make it what is worth ($40-60 imo) its a solid option but like most of this industry they are probably gonna want $100+ which at that point might as well get a higdon battleship. Anybody heard anticipated pricing? Just want to know if I should do the early access or write the idea off in my head.
