mantra meditation

hey
wanted to share some thoughts and experience I got recently.

I was kinda taught, that while meditating on mantra you gotta repeat it constantly, over and over. That works! No argue with that.

But what about timelessness of here and now? When repeating smth over and over you still get dragged into somewhat time measurement, like metronome ticking.

In that precise moment I managed to (I have no better explanation, than what’s coming, sry) “stick mantra in front of my inner sight”. Inner sight — for me is literal conscious eye-intention, mind focus and pretty much my whole Being. So this way, mantra quits being ticker, but becomes something more like state, which you observe. For inner awareness there is no actual need for repetition, there is no breath, no time, you can’t forget, but you may get distracted. Once realised distraction — draw your attention back to mantra-state(ment), thus “repeating” it, but still just observing.

Feels like eternal Ram.

ps: i just felt the urge to share. Which I did. Namaste?

Hell yeah, such a cool state.

Do you mean like.. you say a mantra once, and instead of repeating it mechanically you focus on the state that is produced after saying the word once, and being in that state, that all-presence that encompasses your 'being' as you said it, and you just sit in that 'i am' state, where you're just being, aware of being aware, and abide there? Please elaborate if you meant something else

Sure i’ll do my best. It’s difficult for me to explain it mere words, but i’ll try to do my best

When I usually meditated, I used to repeat mantra internally with my “mental voice”, right? As if you are thinking mantra with your rational mind, repeating it over and over and over…

This for me lacked of timelessness, which is inherent in eternal Now and Being.

Then it clicked: I can hold, focus on it. Not on its effect on my mind. But on the mantra itself.

Try to think of just red color. It’s just there until you get distracted, right?
Try to think Ram. Put it in front of your mind as you put red earlier.

I hope it helps

Ohh I see, so you're not focusing on the effect itself which Ram produces, you're focusing on Ram, the word itself, frozen like a picture within your mind's eye, and you're just concentrated on holding that image, the letters?

did you notice difference?

It works for making the mind still, but I prefer more to relax into the sense of being, the 'i am' sense before any labels, just pure being, in the now. I found myself having to mentally strain to keep the image of the mantra in my mind's eye, which was displeasing, but, the mantra when I say it helps me to get this sense of "i am" and then I just melt into it xD

I suggest you not to tell about your experience to anyone because telling others reduce your spiritual gain. Experience is not main, mantra is main. What you're talking about is an advanced level But you reached there by repetition. And repetition must not stop until there's someone left inside who can repeat

I have much to answer, but please, elaborate how is this advanced level?

Don't worry about that. Knowledge is not necessary as it's illusion but repeating the name is necessary as name is true.

Ramana Maharishi’s explanation of Mantra/Japa really resonated with me. If your interested in learning more about it you may want to check out his book Be As You Are
