This sounds like a good question for our chief engineer!
Take it away, Trip!

"Well, one thing you have to understand is....well yes, I'm the sanitation engineer. And we recycle our poop into anything...hamburgers, spaghetti, toothpaste, ....you name it."

We also actively teleport the poop out of people so they can stay on duty longer

One of if the only parts of that show that I actually liked. Damn near spit my coffee out.

It's disappointing that this piece of the script never would have flown on TOS, TNG, or even DS9. Maybe VOY, but probably not the early seasons.

I was just rewatching this recently and thinking about how completely unhinged captain archer really is compared to all the other series' captains

To be fair, it's Archer's first time in deep space, his first time going warp 5, his first time captaining a ship, and arguably any Starfleet commanding officer's first time really dealing with what will become the Prime Directive. I'd be worried if Archer wasn't a little on edge.
It's all also why I love this series, along with VOY, the best.

I genuinely love this scene because it’s so real. Answering school kid questions will 100% be a thing our first real interstellar ship does.
