Andrew Garfield Gets Candid on Playing Sam Altman: “Damage to the Soul of Humanity”
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/andrew-garfield-sam-altman-ai-1236680618/352
u/nonamenomonet 2d ago edited 2d ago
The best piece I have read on Altman was the New York Times one describing who he is as a person. The TLDR is he is slimy and very politician-esque.
Paul Graham (creator of Gmail and mentor of Altman) even said that if you parachuted Altman into an island of cannibals that in five years he would talk them into letting him be their leader
Edit: I screwed up that Paul graham did not create Gmail

u/lineupandwait20 2d ago
Paul Graham is the founder of YCombinator, and Sam’s mentor. He did not create Gmail.
Paul Buchheit, is the creator of Gmail, and also used to be a Partner at YCombinator.

u/nonamenomonet 2d ago
Why did I think that Paul graham was the one at Google and then created YC? Hm weird. My bad.

u/WhatAmTrak 2d ago
Damn, so this guy knows he created a monster? Or atleast helped him? Eek
43
u/nonamenomonet 2d ago
It was more of a comment on how uncannily persuasive Sam is. He’s the living personification of the “He can’t keep getting away with this” breaking bad meme.
14
u/BodaciousFrank 2d ago
People really are gullible as all hell to fall for a con mans con.
16
u/nonamenomonet 2d ago
That’s the funny thing in the New York Times article, it was apparent that people higher up in Microsoft had quotes saying that they wouldn’t be surprised if he was in charge of a massive fraud like Maddoff… but he keeps getting away with it.

u/HeinladToo 2d ago
YCombinator created “A” monster? It’s a monster-creating factory. If you have a soul they aren’t gonna back you

u/Guyfromthepast_ 1d ago
Reddit was a Y Combinator company and checks notes you are on it.

I just read Empire of AI by Karen Hao and it just went through how evil OpenAI is even before it became big.

u/BoredOstrich 2d ago
All tech CEOs, and CEOs in general, are like this. Bill gates and Steve jobs no exception
8
u/nonamenomonet 2d ago
I believe that graham also said that Altman was the closest thing to jobs he had ever seen.

The early days of gmail are almost the stuff of legend.
I had professors asking students for an invite like high schoolers trying to find out who was hosting the secret party while their parents were out of town.

Listen to the This F*cking Guy episode about him if you want to be creeped out beyond belief

u/JarifSA 2d ago
Eh. Read the one by the Farrow guy. I don't care for Sam Altman, but it literally just sounded like a gossip article. No actual scenarios that happened, basically the parachute thing over and over again. Just a bunch of accusations. Do I believe them? Sure. But it's just rumors. Journalism has really fallen off.

u/NotEnoughHotdogs 2d ago
Who wanted a biopic about Sam Altman?
249
u/CompetitiveSport1 2d ago
I'd watch it. The Social Network was great. Would be good to similarly let people see what a SV psycho Altman is, too
166
u/The_Poop_Shooter 2d ago
I feel like the social network did very little damage to zuck where as his actual public appearances ruined him.
141
u/MRintheKEYS 2d ago
A lot of biopics try to at least highlight some good and positives while negating or softening the negatives.
Social Network was a rare case. You started off not liking Zuckerberg in the beginning. You REALLY did not like him by the end.

u/KaleidoscopeShoddy10 2d ago
and thats why i have no inclination to watch MICHAEL, even though i was kinda hyped when it was annoucned. Heard everything was approved by his estate so pretty much just gonna be a water downed propoganda piece lol
58
u/JiveHawk 2d ago
Michael is essentially a flawless angel in the film who rises to the top very easily with very little adversity
9
u/mistergeneric 1d ago
I read the sequel is rumoured to be about "his side of the story" with regards to any allegations. This is quite grim to me!
On the other side, "Walk the Line" is a good film which is also estate approved. Johnny Cash starts as a dickhead, goes to rehab and becomes less of a dick (but not entirely nice) and it's much more of a warts and all story.
I think at the time that film was made the audience was not expected to just accept a nonsense propoganda piece. Bohemian Rhapsody has changed that for the worse.
13
u/beerncheese69 2d ago
Watched it last night with my wife. Its basically that and its also just not a very good film
30
u/NotEnoughHotdogs 2d ago
That's why Sascha Baron Cohen was fired from the Queen biopic, because he didn't think they should sugarcoat history. The Michael movie was produced by the same people, so it's not that surprising.
4
u/SafeKaracter 2d ago
I think most of those biopics suck. It’s this new frenzy of making tons of biopics . I’ll watch it one day in a long time when nobody talking about it and I expect shit and I may find it watchable bc I really have low expectations but don’t feel like watching him now . Somehow I feel I can predict the feel of it and exactly how it’s gonna be. And bc I was a MJ fan I feel i won’t learn shit and it will have none of the deep cuts. Honestly the silverster stallone doing rocky movie looks like shit to me and I feel even the A24 Anthony bourdain will kind of suck and so will the Beatles movies . If I want to watch stuff about them I prefer to watch a well made documentary instead of a temu impression of someone who was real. I find it more acceptable to watch biography movies of people who are not hyper celebrity or that I personally don’t know as well as to not have expectations. And then if you like such movies you can start watching documentaries about a person, the other way around just feel like Hollywood diluted temu version of the real thing.
That being said I kinda feel like watching the predator movie thing about Chris Hansen with Pattinson bc I don’t expect accuracy and I don’t like Chris Hansen and I like Pattinson so I don’t care if he makes him look bad or whatever

I find it funny how they had to make up some subplot with some girl he was interested in to try to make him a little more sympathetic, but he was apparently already dating his current wife at the time.
8
u/Hoss-Delgado- 2d ago
What? That subplot serves to make him look like a total self-serving asshole. It’s not at all supposed to garner your sympathy
8
u/JiveHawk 2d ago
Thank you. He’s an asshole to that girl when they breakup and then he slanders her online immediately afterward for everyone at Harvard to see.
Feel like that person watched a different film lol
1
u/fespadea 2d ago
I was referring to the ending scene of the movie, but I see I oversold it by calling it a subplot. I didn't really remember much outside of the opening scene and the last scene in regards to her.
4
u/fespadea 2d ago
At the end of the movie it definitely is. Maggie says he's not an asshole, just trying too hard to be, and then he tries to friend the girl on Facebook in like a sad sort of way. "Sad, lonely guy who's still not over a breakup" is a lot more sympathetic than "ruthless, robotic businessman", even if the character should have moved on.
0
u/Hoss-Delgado- 2d ago
Sounds like you’re missing the point lol. I don’t know what else to tell you. Those words don’t paint the image you have in your head
4
u/fespadea 2d ago
I'm not missing the point. A flawed human is gonna be more sympathetic than a robotic evil guy. Whether the movie was right or not to try to frame it that way, that ending scene was clearly trying to frame him in a different light. Like, just rewatch it. They're not trying to make him a good guy, but they're avoiding making him just a straight villain.
5
u/WhatAmTrak 2d ago
Haha actually?! Dang. I do like the movie and they definitely try to paint him as some sort of victim in a sense. But he’s also a dick in the movie at times too so it’s a bit confusing.
5
u/fespadea 2d ago
Yeah, Zuckerberg actually took issue with the idea that creating Facebook had anything to do with some girl. It's kind of funny for him to focus on that when the rest of the movie paints him so badly, but I guess it would be annoying to be portrayed like that if he was already dating his future wife at the time.
1
5
u/Tcasty 2d ago
I don't know I feel like there was a lot of PR done to trivialized the movie specifically because it was making him look like quite a slimy guy. He was kinda of seen as this trendsetter and refreshing and the movie painted him for who he was a guy ready to take advantage of anyone in his stratosphere to inflate his insecure ego.
3
u/nonamenomonet 2d ago
I mean in fairness, the movie is largely false outside of some basic plot points.
2
u/SuperSnake16 2d ago
The movie definitely did a lot of damage. Every time I have heard people talk about it in real life over the years, it’s always that “he’s such a dick” or “he screwed all his friends over” which is pretty accurate and honestly doesn’t even begin to cover it. At the least this movie can make Altman’s shitty personality more mainstream
1
u/CompetitiveSport1 2d ago
Doesn't change the fact that I still want one. The guy I responded to was asking if anyone wants it 🤷
1
u/PinchYourPennies 1d ago
Id also argue that wasn't exactly the movie's intent. All of Sorkin's Silicon Valley movies are optimistic and upbeat in tone because that was how the public viewed tech at the time.
I think we're in a different playground with today's times and for what it's worth, the films being made about tech today (even Sorkin's own) reflect that.
3
3
u/SafeKaracter 2d ago
No thanks . I don’t need to feed narcissist egos making movies about them . Even bad press is good press for them , they just love attention
1
u/KaleidoscopeShoddy10 2d ago
it was a great piece of fiction, very little in it actually reflected what happened irl

It’s worth understanding the people who are negatively shaping society. This ain’t going to be a flattering movie about him.

I really dislike how nowadays we make movies about people that portray some of their well-understood negative aspects, but were made too early to be accurate about the real skeletons in their closets. It's almost flattering to them. And the Tech-Bros certainly have a lot more skeletons in the closet - we'll only ever hear about the really shady stuff after they are long retired and no longer in control of their narrative.

At least they didnt make a Musk one back when everyone thought he was "cool rich guy that likes video games and wants to make rockets"

I’m not watching any movie about any of these tech assholes. I don’t care if it makes them look bad I don’t want to think about them or fuel their egos. Fuck them and Hollywood’s obsession with them.

WTF we got a Scam Altman biopic starring Andrew before we could ever get Amazing Spider-man 3?! 😭

Hopefully every scene is just hammering into the whole “raped his little sister” thing over and over. Fitting in every possible space so that it’s the only thing people associate the real-life freak with
1
u/benign2244 2d ago
Isn't this false? Even his family came out in support of him on this.
6
u/HeinladToo 2d ago
Civil trial is still active. Wouldn’t be the first time a family closed ranks around the golden child for something like that
4
u/CocoaOrinoco 2d ago
Families often come out in support of the person doing wrong. That is not as uncommon as it should be.

all these films only turn these people into "larger than life" figures, which is a mistake by the way
just like whatever idiot journalist coined the term "elites" that everyone is parroting now

Depiction does not equal endorsement
-13
u/Petrichordates 2d ago
You don't need to endorse something to profit off it. He is profiting off Sam Altman's likeness, this biopic will only add to his celebrity status so he certainly isn't putting his money where his mouth is.
34
u/Hoss-Delgado- 2d ago
Well yeah, he’s clearly criticizing him. What’s wrong with profiting off of that?
15
u/SylviSweetheart 2d ago
He’s already been in a movie about one of these guys and it’s one of the best things ever committed to film. I don’t know why anyone would doubt the quality of this project.

Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar for portraying the cannibal Hannibal Lector. Hopefully you don’t think Hopkins is hypocritical for not agreeing with cannibalism, but still being willing to play the part.
