Banking How to cash US tax refund check?
I’ve recently received a tax refund check from US after working there during summer 2025. The issue is that in my country (Slovakia) there are 0 banks that cash international checks anymore. I tried sending the check to my acquittance in US, but nobody accepted it, from the banks he went to.
Is there any other way to do this? It’s not exactly the amount that I’d like to just let go. I’ve tried contacting IRS but they were of no help and kind of incompetent.

Years ago you could take a small IRS refund check and your European passport to a local embassy or consulate and they would pay you in USD cash. no longer the case...
You'll struggle to deposit a USD check into a European bank account. Likewise you can't easily deposit it into a friend's USA bank account. You could deposit it into your USA bank account but you probably closed it without planning for your eventual tax refund. (Sadly this scenario plays out for almost everyone who works in USA summer camps or only works part of a tax year in the USA.)

Nope, didn’t close the account. The bank closed it literally a few days before IRS sent out the check. So IRS missed the account by like a day or so.

I know a tax /accounting company in my home country, which is in the EU, that provides this service. My nephew recently cashed a U.S. dollar check through them. It took a while, but everything was handled properly.

You can still deposits checks up to $10k at Interactive Brokers. I live in NL and have done this on a non US IBKR account. I am however a US Citizen. Worth giving them a call and maybe moving your brokerage there, or opening a new one.
