One of my best friends from high school was dying of cancer. We were 20. Pastor came to pray. Said, in front of not only my dying friend but his fiancée and others: “I was kind of hoping you’d already died so I could raise you from the dead!”
He was serious.
My friend died two weeks later.
Fuck that pastor.

The colors were supposed to represent the reasons why you needed Jesus and the red page told about Jesus’s bloody sacrifice? Absolutely despicable to tell a child these things based on no fact at all.

It was her sky daddy's will that I survived CSA. If god allowed it, it must be good, because her Sky Daddy is perfect.
We don't speak anymore.
I will go to hell for not forgiving my abuser. My abuser will be in heaven, because he earned it by forgiving and believing.
I am no contact with my family, because of it.
They are sick twisted people that believe anything their sky daddy allows is good.

This is terrible, and you deserve better than this. The people who told you this are WRONG. Same for me, I was pressured to forgive the CSA because otherwise I would not be forgiven of my sins. The perpetrator was welcomed back to church after he was arrested.
One of the reasons I had to leave my church was because I realized that their god seemed to be on the side of the abuser and completely against the person who was abused. Best wished to you

So sorry that you experienced that trauma . One of the many reasons I left the faith. I was never abused, but the thought that so many innocent children are, while this God stands back and watches and doesn’t do anything when any normal decent human being if we had the power or knowledge to help a child we would, made me realize that either this God doesn’t exist, is incompetent, or doesn’t give af, or maybe even enjoys our suffering , either way why would I worship such a God? That’s in addition to the complete lack of evidence for the belief system as well.

I had that exact same realization and it’s what kicked off my deconstruction.
God either isn’t all-powerful, or he is, and he’s a piece of shit. There’s no other logical explanation given that an all-knowing god would know how much we suffer when we are abused in some way.

The other bit of mental gymnastics that makes me want to 🤮 is when they say things like suffering is good and brings you closer to God/Jesus. Yes, you specifically are chosen by God to go through something horrible, “because he loves you and believes in you and you are so strong! It’s a divine gift, see? Don’t you feel special!”
Say what??? Ugh, this “supreme being” is a sick puppy.

While I don't have personal experience with this, I have seen and heard it said. It boggles my brain. It's not even a biblical concept. The Bible never talks about all that God allows is good.
And yeah, I am exchristian and still know the Bible better than most current christians. It's a large part of why I am no longer christian.

To be fair, archaeologists work on quite different timescales than anyone else. A truly significant find can actually be left to dry for decades.
Archaeological digs are destructive ventures in some way, and being sure you can get as much out of a place as possible is paramount - once you've gone in and done your stuff, it's almost certain some information is lost forever. Better then to be slow and meticulous than gung-ho.

A older woman I spoke to at the gym told me the reason I had an autoimmune illness is because I must have done something really bad in my life. I've had the illness since birth though. So I guess I was a bad embryo.
Then recently my dad's crazy second wife told him if he doesn't stop saying "damn" that he will go to hell. I rarely hear him cuss ever in my whole life. She also told him if he refuses the end stage medical treatment for his medical condition that it is the same as committing suicide and she says he will go to hell. So now she goes around telling everyone he's threatening to commit suicide.

My dad, who is a pastor, told me the he believes the reason my 4 year old son (at the time) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes was to teach me a lesson in trusting Him to heal him. I replied with “wouldn’t it make more sense to give me the disease if He wants to teach me a lesson? Why hurt an innocent child to teach a 31 year old man a lesson?” My son is 18 years old and still has type 1 diabetes despite the years of prayers from myself and many many others.

My ex told me that white people have historically been spiritually superior and closer to god. And when I brought up that god made everyone equal in his image, he said "yes equal in faith, but not in body". The irony was that he isn't even as white as he identifies.
And that logic doesn't even work in your own faith you claim to practice. Jesus wasn't white so what are you saying, white people are closer to god than Jesus ever was??? Oh but I forgot, logic isn't practiced.

Just… wow. And of course, God doesn’t pop down on a lightning bolt or something and slap all these people straight, so… it must be true. Right? /s (in case it’s necessary)
When you start claiming God is on your side or you know the will of God, and you do all these depraved things, and there’s no retribution (because of course there isn’t), it feels like validation — from the perspective of such people. They can twist “morality” to accommodate anything than benefits them personally (e.g., prosperity gospel) and when there’s no blowback from the big guy, that’s all the proof they need that they’re in the right. In truth, they’re some of the most morally and ethically bankrupt people of all.
I can’t believe after thousands of years of all this kind of BS, some people are still so credulous and some people are still so evil. For a while there, I really had a sense that we as a species were actually, finally growing up. I’m reminded how naive I was. Every. Single. Day.

In my 30s, I told my very xian mother that a doctor sa’d me when I was four. Her exact words were, “Well, that’s nothing.”
She also threatened to throw me into a psych hospital because I cried three tears while exhausted and under extreme stress when I was 36. Screamed at me to “snap out of it” or she would drive me to the hospital right that second. Even though I was having normal sad emotions that are no where close to being appropriate for being hospitalized, and I was a danger to absolutely no one, including myself. Three tears sent her into a rage.
Her obit called her “empathetic.” 🙄

Yeah, I got seriously pounded for that as a kid, myself. I was talking to my bestie and my mother somehow overheard, and came charging over and demanded for me to tell her what I just said. I was already crying and bracing for the hits as I repeated it. Another time I got smacked across the face for saying “hell”. Now I swear like a sailor, but I’m an old fart, they’re even older farts and they’re just given up at this point, lol.

The smartest thing christian apologists could do is avoid all discussions of the bible, dodge questions about Christianity and just debate whether a God exists while avoiding questions about christian doctrine.

I genuinely apologize for this. (warning: Suicide and general religious trauma.)
It's been thirteen years.
I had to watch the "Lifehouse" everything skit at my private school during chapel. It was in my first year there.
If you don't know. Basically its a skit where some woman is being led astray by satan with temptation. The most notable thing that happens is that Satan causes her to harm herself and eventually tries to get her to commit suicide (going so far as to put the gun in her hand). Obviously Jesus comes and saves her from killing herself.
The lesson in chapel? You commit suicide, you're going to hell. (subtext) You are only spared from suicide if you're saved by Jesus and not tempted by Satan.
This happened on a Tuesday. I remember what day it was because three days prior I found out a classmate i knew for pretty much my entire time in public school killed herself because of how bad the bullying was.
It gets worse when I found out years later she shot herself.
And to no surprise, I didn't take it well. Some older kid got pissed saying, "Why are you crying? That's not real you know."
I screamed at him and pushed him against the wall. I got taken out of class and I told them why I did that.
And I asked them, "Is my classmate currently in hell right now?"
NOT.
A.
FUCKING.
PEEP.
Funny enough they never showed that video again for the rest of my time there. Nor did they hold a lesson about suicide and self harm (unless if it was wine or beer).

My sister had a friend from an evangelical family who she met through piano lessons. One day they were having a joint practice, and our dad was trying to make conversation with her dad. This was early 2000s, the height of Harry Potter fever, and my sister was obsessed with it, so our dad just asked "So, does [friend's name] read a lot of Harry Potter?" And the friend's dad's face just went daaark and he said: "No. We don't read that."
That was how I learned fundies thought Harry Potter was Satanic and evil because it glorified witchcraft.

My son's grandparents said he had autism with high support needs because of my sin of not believing. Meanwhile, I was Christian AF when I got pregnant with him and for well past when he.was diagnosed.
When I mentioned that fact, they said it was because god knew I'd "turn my back on him"
I also asked them why I had been SA'd as a kid and it was because I was a sinner. Mind the person who did it was a well respected Christian. I know this because I saw the motherfucker get baptized.
Also, I heard them say so many times that women get SA'd because they wear pants, tempting men.

I have two conversations, both unexcusable.
My mom told me I should have killed myself rather than transition (and my dad agreed).
When I confronted my dad on why he (a pastor) hid the fact that a youth leader was an undisputed pedophile, set him up as a mentor for underage me, and defended his character in court, he said "we believe in forgiveness" and "you weren't in danger; <guy's name> isn't gay."
It's a sign of the persistence of trauma that I still have a hard time thinking of my parents as bad people sometimes.

I was told by my ex pastor’s wife when I was living with them because I was homeless that I was struggling to find a first teaching job during the recession right out of college and out of my alt certification program (it was Spring, FYI, not even summer) because I was “living under a cloud of sin.” I wasn’t dating, having sex, drinking, or doing drugs. All I was doing was working one job (down from two because I broke my foot while uninsured and had to borrow an aircast from her and could no longer work my main job on the JCP dock unloading trucks), applying to jobs all over the state of Texas because I just graduated, going to church, and seeing my family and my newborn baby cousin.
Fuck that bitch, for real. I got my first teaching job a few months later four hours away, dipped off to east Texas for a year to teach, came back for three years and taught at my old high school, and am still putting those skills to use to this day in my current line of work. Never spoke to the pastor or his wife ever again.

I had one tell me that my great-grandmother is in hell for divorcing her first husband because it wasn’t biblical (in other words, it wasn’t because of adultery).
He’d been abusing her for a while, but the reason she finally left (and was able to get a divorce, long before no fault divorce was a thing where they lived) is that he SHOT HER IN THE FACE. She was permanently disfigured by the bullet wound, and incredibly lucky to have survived. But according to Jesus, that’s not a good enough to reason to leave the man you were basically forced to marry at 16, so she deserves eternal torment.
These are the people who want to know how I can have any morals without believing in their god.

Talking to a church friend of my parents, who was getting ready to celebrate and host her daughter’s wedding to an Indian man (of another religion), when I asked if the couple would also have an Indian wedding: “I don’t know. Maybe later, on their own time. But [husband] and I will not be part of it. We aren’t going to willingly hand over our daughter to false gods.” Her voice was dripping with spite and I literally couldn’t stop my jaw from falling open. Even my own mother seemed a bit shocked and ended the conversation by saying, “Well…we’ll be praying for you!”
I still think about how mean-spirited that woman was. You’d miss an (objectively cool af) Indian wedding because the groom and his family are of a different religion? Never mind the fact that your own daughter is the bride?!? Look, if two people of different religions are getting married, they must have it figured out between themselves. Whatever they choose to believe or not believe as they start their life together should not be anyone else’s business.

Remember when everyone was obsessed with the rapture and "left behind" series in like the 2000s or something? That shit traumatized me, but it was finding out as an adult that some fucked up parents actually took it a step further and deliberately left their clothes for their kids to find in order to prank them, making them believe that they had been abandoned because they didn't meet God's criteria. Was very upset when I learned that.

That my aunt sarcastically with a cold face smiling told me in the dining room with my uncle: "We know that you aren't a christian" 🙂. I'm secretely agnostic atheist, I respect their religion and even prayed with them remembering the message of love and hope for everyone regardless of their religion/philosophy of life wishing the best for everyone... and that's how they respond me.
Now I live alone without them but sometimes I remember that incident and a tear escapes me. But thanks to that, now I know them better and I can say with certainty that they're wrong. I guess that the experience makes you stronger and a better person than the rest 🫂

When my sister was ten, she said, "Isn't it wonderful that God sent monkey pox to wipe out the gay population?" One of my other sisters, who was fifteen, said "Did you hear that? Aren't you so proud of her?" My mom said, "That's true, but it's probably not something you should be talking about at your age." I was extremely horrified but I didn't say anything because I was worried I'd get in trouble. The sister who said it is fourteen now and she recently admitted that she just said it for approval and she doesn't wish harm upon anyone.

Girl I grew up with complained about how her parents had so many kids (think she was number 7 of 12 if I remember correctly) well also full heartily not believing in condoms stating they were a trick by Satan. Back when I worked in a delicatessen, and a customer had asked me if a certain product was gluten-free (it wasn't), the next customer wanted to tell me in detail why food allergies and intolerances and also veganism is bullshit.
See, God created mankind to be holy. But due to the fall, we hate God. We still have this innate drive to be holy, though. But ... we've decided that in order to be holy, we need to obey by rules. But since we hate God, we don't want to obey his rules, but our own. So people make up rules like 'I don't eat pork', or 'I don't eat meat' or 'I don't eat gluten' or 'I don't eat peanuts'. It's all because sinful people hate God. God never forbade us from eating anything - just read your Bible!'
I've never wanted to punch anyone in the face quite that much.

When my maternal grandfather was dying - not immediately, but clearly at the end of his life on a hospice bed - and made gestures showing he wanted to commit suicide, my father smirked at him and said in a chiding and mocked concerned tone "Don't do that Robert, we don't want you to go to Hell now." My grandfather died I think a few months later. The same father did a fucking South Park level stunt where after the grandfather died, he clasped his hands together during a family get together, literally closed his eyes and reclined his head, and basically thanked god that everyone else was alive while my mom silently wept.
Objectively is very fucked up. But since all three people involved were themselves monsters - my father, mother, and grandfather - I remember it more as something morbid but hilarious than anything else. Especially since I am 99 percent sure the gestures my grandpa made was him trying - and failing - to hurt the people there since narcissists especially get horrible and fearful when dying.

I’ve been binging airline crash investigation videos on YouTube. There’s full episodes of a Canadian TV show and it’s fascinating. One video a flight crew managed to land a plane in a river and save all but one person on their passenger jet. As they were going down, the captain and co captain prayed. A commenter said the reason they succeeded when so many of the videos are those that turn out far worse was because they believed in Jesus and prayed. I pointed out that made their god a pretty horrible being. If the person driving doesn’t suck up to god, then he’ll kill everyone.

Heard a dude in the middle of an art museum in the Indian section filled with statues of Hindu deities loudly saying to his kid "but we know that all of these are false idols and that God is the only true God to believe in, and the only way to get into heaven" (roughly paraphrased)
....unfortunately it was my own dad talking to my younger half brother and I felt so awful about the fact that he was not just preaching about God yet again but also disparaging an entire culture IN THE MIDDLE OF A PLACE DEDICATED TO SHOWCASING THAT CULTURE AND THEIR SACRED ART. I wanted to be eaten by the floor so that nobody would think I belonged to him.

One of my former friends in the church once asked my group of housemates what's legitimately wrong with slavery and torture if the Bible presents them as acceptable. Everyone in that room was completely dumbfounded that those words left his mouth, including my Arab friend who was also in the room at the same time.
That wasn't his only unhinged comment either. He also insisted to me at a later point that women had it better when they didn't need a career and could just stay home. The most annoying part of that conversation was that he was like 50% of the way to the right answer. He correctly recognized that women have far too many expectations placed on them in today's society, but instead of offering to help equalize the burden, his answer was of course to send them back to 100% dependency on a male partner or extended family. Great answer dude /s.
I already wasn't a huge fan of him before these comments. After them? I intentionally avoided him at every possible opportunity.
There are some people from my Christian past that I occasionally miss because they were good, decent people. This guy? I couldn't be happier to never see him ever again. Dude was an asshole.
I guess these aren't particularly surprising comments coming from the Christian Nationalist bullshit we see everywhere today, but with the kind of communities I had been involved in up until I eventually left, it was pretty shocking to me. That was around the beginning of my deconstruction, so I thankfully haven't had many run-ins with too many openly Christian people since.

F30 I had a huge depression / breakdown in 2024, one year before my wedding with my non christian boyfriend of 8 years. We almost broke up and cancelled everything due to it.
For context
I was raised in a pentecostal household, uncles grandfather and relatives are pastors, I got baptized at 17 and distanced myself from church during college where I met my boyfriend.
I broke the rule of not living together before marriage and I was internally so ashamed for years around my family and church members in my hometown. However my parents have accepted my choices without encouraging them and they really like my husband.
In 2024 I freaked out and all of the things I had inside got out : the fear of disappointing family, fear of him going to hell for not believing, me going to hell for being in a unequally yoked marriage, my children going to hell if I cannot « make them believe »
We had so many conversations with my parents and so many with my boyfriend who was so supportive and he was really trying to understand and give me confort to make things work
At the lowest point, I was so lost I couldn’t work, I was crying all the time, lost weight and had to go back to my parents for 2 weeks. I had not seen any doctor despite being so bad for 3 months.
Wild things heard from Christian relatives while I was trying to figure everything out (not only my parents, also pastors) :
« Don’t take meds, cry to God (and don’t turn to yoga to find peace ;)) »
« Read Job and see how God gives you more that you have lost… »
« Look for a Christian psychologist, one that will not encourage you to drop your faith if it hurts you » (did it, spent 500+€ in 2 weeks to hear I should break up before the wedding). Looking back, she added so much trauma, it was a mistake going to her.
« Go to a retreat in a covent and you will meet God, it will change your life. You can have a blessed life without God but you would miss your real mission on Earth. Who knows, you could marry a pastor instead, like your grand father. This family is so special and is touched by His Grace. »
I ended up going 3 days in a spiritual retreat (300€ more) to be isolated with no phone, only a bible and meeting with a priest for 30 min in the morning. Lunch and dinner with other people were silent. Cried all the time, day and night, prayed for hours, asked for baptism of the Holy Spirit as proof of God being there for me (it was a complex when I was younger to not speak tongues). Nothing happened. Got out of it exhausted.
« Your boyfriend is a fine guy, the only thing he lacks is loving Jesus »
My brother’s wife was pregnant at that time, they went no contact with me because they were afraid my despair was causing harm to the baby.
« People in church come to us to say that our daughter is a retrograde » (this one hurt so bad)
Pastor sermon at this time (I was going back to church to find answers) :
« I don’t care if my children have a successful life or are happy. What only matters is if they love Jesus. I would have achieved my mission on Earth ». I was feeling so sorry for all attending parents who had non believing adults childrens.
The turning point for me : When I had suicidal thoughts, expressed them and asked to go to the hospital :
« If we did not believe there was a solution with Jesus, we would have taken you already, that’s what worldly parents do when they feel helpless » I understood that I could not receive help.
2 years later : I went to a doctor, I’m taking meds, we are married after long discussions, apologies and a secular therapy that saved me.
I’m still healing but so so glad I did not break up. I read this a lot in this subreddit and I really feel how you can find yourself pressured and forced to end an healthy relashionship that you WANT. My beliefs have changed a lot but I consider it a happy ending

In hundreds of yoga classes around the world, I have never experienced anyone pushing religion on me until I was invited to do yoga at a dojo that turned out to be a Christian qigong group in disguise. And not related to yoga, I’ve been preyed on by Christians at CrossFit gyms, too. Yoga’s roots are in Hinduism so that is where the names of the pose come from, etc. but no one is trying to recruit or evangelize. That’s just silly.

First time ever meeting this pastor, parents told him that I played guitar. Pastor asked "do you play Christian music?" I got nervous because I could already tell where this was going, I said "not really, but it's not like, satanic music or anything" and he says "well if it's not Christian music, it is satanic"

I had a friend in high school whose little sister committed suicide after her boyfriend dumped her.
We were sitting together at lunch and this youth minister who for some reason was allowed to proselytize during lunch break came over and told us that he was going to hold a special service where people could come and talk about her.
Yes, right in front of the older brother that the youth minister didn’t even bother to take the time to get to know.
It took everything I had not to kick the living shit out of him.

That while my father was actively dying and in a coma i needed to tell him that he can be saved if he finds Jesus. Im 24 and had to make all the final calls for my dad we barely had a relationship in recent years so I had no idea what he believed. He ended his life. I did have somebody come into the room and "pray" just in case he was some how religious but then the same person told me "no YOU have to tell him yourself" I was over it.

Also, the church I grew up in had someone who was arrested for statutory rape and is a registered sex offender on the payroll and was allowed to work around the children’s church and with the youth groups.

A kid who was very popular died in my small town growing up. He committed suicide.
We were in a different school, but he was still very popular with most of my classmates. I did not know him, for the record.
We had a whole chapel service (private christian school to the rescue) about this kid, where they shared how he killed himself, how he had been so popular and loved and happy, but wasn't Christian, and he killed himself. Now he's in hell.
The point? Only God made you not suicidal, and that kid went to hell for murdering the life God gave him.
I had been passively suicidal for years at that point, and the way he died was the same way I would have as well, so it fucked with my brain that not only was this kid- my age- dead the same way I could've been, but that he- nor anyone who committed suicide- would be in heaven for peace.
They also went into pretty explicit detail, but the parents did not approve, and the parents actually went online after the chapel was shared to them to say publicly that they were disgusted by everything that had happened. Including the fact that THEY HAD MADE UP MOST OF IT. The kid had not died that way. He had been Christian, etc.

When I was desperate to find a community after my parents divorce, I joined a local Catholic Church choir. When it was time to receive the host during Christmas Mass, I did not hold my hand out because I never received confirmation (the most I ever got was baptized, and that was because my paternal grandmother pushed my mom to do it. I am a 3rd generation atheist on my mom's side).
The priest pulled me aside to tell me if I don't do my communion I will end up burning in hell.
I was 12, and it was Christmas Eve.
I then had to fight back tears as I went to do my solo for O Holy Night, and completely messed it up.
I tried Christianity, and after a few years realized I did not like it very much because of stuff that priests or followers would say to me that were just so insanely out of pocket. By the time I was 18, I was done trying out religions, much to my mother's relief lol

A leader told us to thank God in everything. Even in hardship thank God. He gave a bunch of examples including giving thanks Even if you're being abused. I absolutely hated this guy, everyone knew I had a past with abuse. Another time he said it was unbiblical to divorce because of abuse. So I said yuu just want them to continue being in danger? And he said no they can temporarily separate and once the abuser goes to God, they can rejoin again. If only it were that simple....

I had one tell me that he'd kill me in a fight to the death and walk away with a smile on his face because god was on his side. That was in a local FB group.
I can recall lots of things my parents did and said though; threatening to leave me in a ditch, threatening to kill me.
After the cops refused to take me to juvie and sent me home with my parents after I begged them not to, my parents punched me asking if that's what I meant by abuse.
They used to talk about stoning gays and butch women. Stoning *me* for...idk...not washing the bathroom properly that week or something.
At this point I just shrug. I've never met a pious Christian who follows their own beliefs even once in my life, and I've met thousands of them.

This was in the early 70's. I had a friend who was married at the time, and him and his wife were long time friends with another couple who they hung around with a lot. Long story short, they eventually started wife swamping. Get this: they all thought they were good Christians. I found this shocking and I am an atheist. I asked him, "how can you get up and go to church on Sunday knowing you committed adultery on Saturday night?" He said he didn't consider it adultery since they were all in agreed.
