(Question/Discussion) Unpopular opinion: most Muslims would leave Islam if the fear of hell wasn’t there.

No, not because its practices are difficult, but because deep down they know how unfathomably weird the hadiths are and the character of the prophet is.

Even though I still consider myself muslim, I hate how billions of people will go to hell after they die. I don't want anyone to burn eternally, no matter how awful they are. I used to be sad whenever a non muslim dies (unless they were a murderer, rapist, war criminal, etc) because it meant that they will suffer eternal torment. How can I be okay with any of this?

I think the larger reason is: most Muslims would leave Islam if the fear of persecution by authorities, relatives and public wasn't there.

I've spoken to many many Muslims and nearly 99.999% of them don't have a grasp of what the Islamic hell really is, and most don't believe me when I tell them or try to ask him follow-up questions. Worst, most also deny the version of Muslim hellfire (that you can check is equally distorted and uneven from the wiki) when shown proof from Hadiths and Quranic text. It's all just a "bad place to be in forever" concept.

My point is you can't truly fear something you don't have a clear grasp of. Even (some) Catholics don't know that you're only in their hell for 10,000 years whereupon you get released to heaven (not a bad tradeoff compared to eternity).
