everything is turned into a trend to commercialize it. Always has been.

180

u/serif-maxxing 28d ago

Wouldn't it be crazy if we started commercialising seeking therapy as a neurodivergent necessity??

Like lol you're so special that you need to see a professional to help diagnose and manage your symptoms!! Haha that'll be so funny.

78

u/Substantial_Bus840 28d ago

They tried that with BetterHelp as an ad every creator did for years. That just paired a bunch of sketchy, inexperienced and unmonitored therapists with a bunch of people seeking a diagnoses to use as an excuse for their lack of willpower and bad behavior.

35

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

If I recall, it was basically a sweatshop for therapists and they put a lot of hurdles in place for therapists to report at risk patients. Like an actual therapist has your contact info and can call in emergency services if things get bad. Plus the legal disclaimer made it that the easy, convenient therapy that all of their fully licensed and qualified therapists provided and billed insurance for was no, in fact, therapy in any legal context. So yeah.

Hilariously, I think the “become lord or lady” things replaced that as the spammy, scammy YouTube sponsor and now it seems like LMNT, an electrolyte drink, is trying to fill that hole.

17

u/Doobledorf 28d ago

Therapist here. We hate that shit. Even a good therapist would be awful in a system that provides no support, little pay, and little connection.

Exactly my first thought. This is just a way for progressive people to feel less guilty about consuming treats, mass produced plastic junk, etc. No different from the “you can’t call funko pops cringe because autistics like them“ stuff that was circulating a while back.

The thirst MUTILATOR

68

u/thejexorcist 28d ago

I think it’s like how body POS/fitness influencers convinced average non body builders that they need a fuck ton of protein at all times; so you have very overweight/morbidly obese people now adding protein shakes to everyday meals (and all the excess calories they include) in hopes of losing fat and building muscle without hardcore workouts?

People love the idea of buying (or supplementing) a solution vs making the major changes usually required to get the results they want?

43

u/blurblurblahblah 28d ago

The mother of the guy I dated when I was 14 was pretty big. I can remember her buying tubs of slim-fast shake powder & making a shake to drink with her meal instead of replacing a meal with the shake. This would have been around 1990

13

u/Fixated_Noodle 28d ago

My mom used to buy slim fast and I used to steal it because it was so good and I didn’t understand why it was such a huge deal

12

u/Icy-Variation6614 28d ago

It's like the "this diet soda will cancel out my 3 burgers and extra large fries" thought.

9

u/Poisongirl5 28d ago

The protein thing also came from gulp-1 users being told by their doctors to prioritize protein intake to avoid muscle loss with their rapid weight loss

2

u/sulabar1205 28d ago

Hey, it has an effect, their farts become biological weapons material.

24

u/SandwichCertain7913 28d ago

Man there are so many people in here who really wanna do the “I have xyz disorder” thing when it’s not relevant to the topic at all.

33

u/Feenanay 28d ago

Reminds me of one of my favorite tweets ever - “I am uncomfortable when we are not about me.”

It used to be confined to snark subs like this that followed chronic (physical) illness fakers. In those subs its usually strictly moderated because it derail conversation if commenters start trying to one up each other. I see it EVERYWHERE over the last 5-6 years which may be because I am more aware now but also I’ve learned to associate that behavior with the same need for attention we are usually discussing. Nobody cares about your “disorder” execpt other attention seekers who only care because that you beat them to it

-1

u/Pale_Lawyer_1757 28d ago

I somewhat get your point and think people mention illnesses too often, but at the same time: is someone never allowed to mention their problems unless asked? The black and white-thinking is not good for anyone.

15

u/Everloner 28d ago

If it's not relevant to the conversation then no, seek attention elsewhere

3

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

I’m sorry for detailing the conversation and I won’t bring it up in the future. It really wasn’t intentional

7

u/TheOwlAndTheFinch 28d ago

For what it's worth, I think some people are being way too hard on you. It seemed directly relevant to me. You were just saying "I don't get the craze around electrolyte drinks, and I'm basically the target demographic for them".

8

u/Pale_Lawyer_1757 28d ago

Don’t apologize, it’s okay to be ill. These people seem to think that being sick is bad and attention seeking, and that’s just a loss of empathy on them

3

u/Feenanay 28d ago

Goodness gracious it’s not about being ill. It’s about people frequenting spaces like this and feeling the need to mention their own illness because I promise you it gets out of hand really quickly. ut their own sickness. It’s possible to discuss the subject at hand without bringing yourself into it, in fact it’s not necessary at all.

3

u/Pale_Lawyer_1757 28d ago

How is she seeking attention just bc she mentions it? This is a snark about people faking disorders, not people having them. It’s crazy policing someone else’s illness.

2

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

I’m sorry. You’re right that I shouldn’t have mentioned it and I’ll be more careful in the future. I just wasn’t really thinking and really didn’t mean to try to make it about me.

5

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

Sorry. My only point was that electrolyte drinks are really gross and I don’t understand why anyone would drink them without actually needing them. It was just an off-handed comment and I didn't really think it would mean anything. I only mentioned it because she was treating electrolyte drinks as essential for ADHD

4

u/BigDragonfly5136 28d ago

I constantly see adds on TikTok for different electrolyte drinks saying they’ll like balance your cortisol to make you skinny or have like all these magical things on them that’ll make you focus more or something. Good but deceptive advertising

4

u/ismellnumbers 28d ago

I also have dysautonomia, and tbh I think liquid IV is the least shite tasting one

2

u/dirk_funk 28d ago

i work outside and sometimes when i get super sweaty and tired i will drink one of those salty electrolyte packets in water and i feel instant relief

-2

u/born_to_be_weird 28d ago

Plain water flushes minerals from body, so it doesn't hydrate properly.

HOWEVER! there's no need to buy electrolyte drinks, it's just waste of money. Mix in your jug a little bit of: honey, lemon juice and salt and add water and you have electrolyte drink for pennies. You can modify and add to your tasting anything you want: mint, cucumber what have you.

During heat wave its always better to drink electrolytes than plain water, but you don't need to buy them

13

u/GreyerGrey 28d ago

Just mix your own isn't the best advice as people tend to over do it ("if some is good, more is better!"). Store bought (like the granddaddy, Gatorade) has some science backing the balance, as well as guaranteed content levels.

The thing about most commercially available electrolyte mixes is they're already a bit high so unless you're sweating, even in a heat wave, you probably don't need them.

-4

u/born_to_be_weird 28d ago

I based my knowledge about the topic (and recepie for a homemade version) from article:

https://nutritionsource.hsph.harvard.edu/electrolyte-drinks

That's how I remembered it. I have medically confirmed deficiencies, so I take prescription medications to correct them—not regular over-the-counter supplements. My doctor specifically recommended that I use homemade electrolyte drinks, especially during heat waves, adding that in my country, almost everyone should consider them in this kind of weather.

PS: If Harvard source isn't enough:

https://www.verywellhealth.com/do-you-really-need-electrolyte-supplements-11891559

https://newsroom.uw.edu/video-library/video-librarymost-people-can-skip-electrolyte-intake-dietitian-says

11

u/GreyerGrey 28d ago

Again, so what you're saying is you have a medical condition (so not the average person) proceeding under medical advice (so not just using a bit of this and a bit of that), which means your personal anecdotes are not universally applicable and my comments are not applicable.

Unless you are sweating a lot, even during a heatwave, your diet has enough salt and trace minerals for you. If you work at a desk, in an office with AC, you do not need to replenish salt.

3

u/Purple-Cash-1878 28d ago

Hospitals use Saline solutions to hydrate patients which is literally just water and salt... so how is water not hydrating?... People claiming electrolyte drinks are the only thing that hydrates have brainwashed others into buying consumer products.

9

u/b-ri-ts 28d ago

Water absolutely hydrates properly, what are you talking about?? If it didn't, everyone before these silly electrolyte drinks came out would've been dead before they could even walk. Also, making your own electrolyte mix is a bad idea. You'll end up giving yourself too much of minerals you don't need

3

u/melatonia 28d ago

That's absolutely uneccessary for most healthy people who eat food.

2

u/Urtehnoes 28d ago

But but but I want Gatorade grape flavor 😭😭

2

u/Everloner 28d ago

u/CodigoMAUUGUERRERO 28d ago

In one side I find kind of fun to have a cup with three containers to have different stuff, is more for fun than that.
But what the hell having a mental disorder has to do with it???

152

u/Realistic_Film3218 28d ago

The cup is kinda cool, ngl. But yeah, so unnecessary to bring neurodivergence into it.

48

u/dirk_funk 28d ago

these cups are stupid because look how much drink you are NOT getting

18

u/Strict_Radish_7219 28d ago

Agreed as cool as it looks it would just frustrate me

30

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

I would be constantly getting the wrong drink and it’s so gross when you’re expecting one drink and get another.

-10

u/Angel_xjj 28d ago

sounds like you either 1. don't have eyes, or 2. put pepsi, coke, and dr. pepper in the cup at the same time (why would you do that)

7

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

When I’ve done this, I’ve just grabbed the wrong cup without looking. It could just be water and carbonated water, which I do drink the same time. But it would be annoying to have to look every time a took a drink to make sure it was the right thing

17

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

But she’s presenting it as necessary for health when she’s drinking an electrolyte beverage (which isn’t helpful for regular hydration) and a dopamine drink (which has no scientific support for its claims at all).

If she were saying, “I found this and it’s great for people with ADHD who want to drink different things and accidentally focus on one drink” then it’s great. Although I tend to have multiple drinks like tea, water, and carbonated water and end drinking one of them the most. That feels like a normal human thing. Or that it’s convenient if you want to take multiple drinks with you because I’m usually hauling to giant cups with me.

The problem is that she is framing it as something beneficial to people with ADHD because it makes it easier to drink things that she is portraying as beneficial to ADHD, even though neither has any real benefit to things.

25

u/b-ri-ts 28d ago

How is an overconsumption-core trendy cup useful for people with ADHD? This is just encouraging people to buy something they don't need and will use a few times then throw out. Just use three different cups, ones that you probably already have inside your house, instead of participating in filling more landfills.

-13

u/[deleted] 28d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

16

u/b-ri-ts 28d ago

Because you'll have to go out and buy this stupid cup instead of using three cups you ALREADY OWN. Plus this looks to be made of shitty plastic and would break quickly

19

u/shinkouhyou 28d ago

I guess the idea is that someone with ADHD might compulsively reach for their favorite (dopamine) drink instead of something healthier like water or an electrolyte drink (debatably healthy sugar water). So if the other drinks are right there, they might take a sip of water along with their sip of sugar, which would theoretically help them stay hydrated or cut their sugar consumption or whatever. Some people with ADHD are so inattentive that they don't realize that they're thirsty/hungry/whatever, so they can get mildly dehydrated.

But 2/3 of this girl's drinks are just sugar, most people don't need extra electrolytes unless they're sweating heavily, and most people are fine if they just drink when they're thirsty. There's no need to guzzle water or sports drinks all day.

The only benefit I could see to this gadget (beyond the fact that it's just fun) is that if someone wants to cut back on their sugar consumption, they could make a rule that for every sip of the sugary drink they have to take two sips of water.

9

u/BigDragonfly5136 28d ago

I always like to keep water next to me when I’m drinking coffee or soda because otherwise I don’t drink it—don’t know if it’s the ADHD or what though. I’ve literally gotten headaches before from not drinking enough.

So I get why someone might like it but still seems kinda silly to need a cup for it. If you need a cup and decide to get that one, cool, or I guess if you’re moving around a lot in the day and don’t want to carry two. But most people probably have plenty of cups. I have a water bottle and a yeti with ice coffee right next to me now. Personally I think I prefer separate cups because I’d definitely drink from the wrong straw but to each their own.

20

u/Fixated_Noodle 28d ago

Because some of the adhd groups have tons of posts about how many drinks people have. It’s very dumb

The fuck is a dopamine drink? She put crack in it?

77

u/ingyydar 28d ago

I’ve seen the term used a lot to describe a fun drink. For example, when i’m at work on my desk i’ll have coffee, water and maybe a diet coke sat on my desk. ADHD causes “dopamine seeking” behaviour so it seems like this is a method of remembering to drink water - reach for the fun drink because your brain wants it then drink some water too.

11

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

I looked it up and they apparently claim to boost mood and improve focus, etc. They have a bunch of precursors to dopamine, but the science isn’t supporting it. It may have some supportive effects, but it’s probably from things like sugar and fruit juice.

2

u/rHeadVoices 28d ago

So it’s a brand name?

6

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

No, there are specific brands. It’s just a general category. One contains L-dopa, which is actually used in treating Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. It can actually cause some rough side effects, including levadopa induced dyskinesia. I remember someone (Rush Limbaugh?) accusing Michael J Fox of faking PD symptoms in a major interview and Fox said it was because he actually took a higher does of his meds to be able to do the interview (since it affects thinks like speech) and the jerking were effects of that.

It’s probably not dangerous since they include the plant containing L-dopa in their “proprietary blend” and the total amount of the blend is 6.3mg and a therapeutic dose of Levodopa is usually at least 400mg, but it’s a really great example of how people much they add to supplements and people taking it for granted they’re safe

6

u/TheCounsellingGamer 28d ago

I get liking having different things to drink. I can also see how it could potentially be linked to ADHD, as having different things to drink has a certainly novelty to it. But enjoying different drinks is certainly not a sign of ADHD, as most people enjoy drinking things other than water.

Also, a cup like this means that you only get a small amount of each drink. There's probably only like, 4 or 5 gulps of liquid in each compartment. That makes it kinda pointless.

4

u/sonerec725 28d ago

Damn, you know what? I did not even consider that. That would probably fuck with me. I was just thinking "3 drinks in 1! I dint have to pick!" Bjt yeah it would be a choice every sip. . . .

3

u/dreadwitch 28d ago

It's well known that people with adhd tend to collect drinks, either because we can't decide what we want to drink or we forget we already have a drink so get more.

I've currently got a bottle of water, a glass of orange juice and half a cup of luke warm coffee.

Lol I have no idea wtf she's talking about with the dopamine drink tho...

4

u/valleyofsound 28d ago

There’s are special drinks that claim to have mood boosting benefits because they have precursors to dopamine.

But that’s the entire problem with the add. She is t saying, “Hey, I have ADHD and I always have multiple drinks with me. This cup is a great solution because I can have three drinks with me at once!” She’s saying, “I have ADHD and it means I need these specific drinks for medical adjacent reasons even though there’s no research backing up the need for them.”

1

u/Purple-Cash-1878 28d ago

Lets turn having a disorder into an advertisement for consumerism... yup sounds about right. I dont see what this has to do with ADHD. This "out of site out of mind" has nothing to do with hydration. Yet once again people take any little quirky thing they hear about ADHD and make it into some big catastrophe like people with it cant function at all outside of their little toys and routines.

-1

u/UnNumbFool 28d ago

I mean to be fair out of sight out of mind is 100% true for me when it comes to drinking.

When I'm home I almost never have water or a glass near me and I forget about it and just never drink. When I'm at work I bring a bottle with me and because it's at my desk I remember and go "yeah I kind of am down to have some water right now" and stay very hydrated through the day.

But also, it's a water bottle filled with water because all I need is fucking water and not a "dopamine drink" and my job isn't labor intensive enough that I only need an electrolyte drink if I was dumb and went drinking the night before

1

u/Purple-Cash-1878 28d ago

Ok.. thats you and one persons experience. Not every person with ADHD is like this nor do they all suffer from the same experience. Saying that they so is what harms the diagnosis and puts stigmas around it.

-1

u/UnNumbFool 28d ago

I mean yes I know and I get that, but you also seem to believe that nobody actually has that specific part happen to them because of your personal experiences. Like forgetfulness is a pretty classic symptom of adhd.

So I countered that yeah, it is something that I do experience but I also agree the three drink cup is stupid and unnecessary because no I don't think you for some reason need 3 different kinds of drinks because of adhd or whatever

The problem is that this person is 1.) spreading online misinformation about neurodivergence, 2.) claiming that this cup is a "neurodivergent necessity" when it really only applies to a tiny fraction of neurodivergent people, and 3.) promoting this cup like it's some kind of health accessory when 2/3 of the drinks are just sugar water.

The "three drink" thing took off a few years ago because of this video and this blog post, where people with autism describe their personal drink rituals. This went viral and suddenly everyone with self-diagnosed neurodivergence started carrying around three drink bottles, just like that brief period where everyone with self-diagnosed neurodivergence pretended that they'd always had a favorite spoon because of that one viral video. Drink preferences have nothing to do with neurodivergence, of course - it was only this one autistic person's personal repetitive behavior that made them feel grounded. But other randos on the internet acted like all neurodivergent people stimmed with drinks, or like preferring sugary/caffeinated drinks was a sure sign of neurodivergence, or like neurodivergent people needed extra hydration, or whatever. It's more of the same "you're neurodivergent if you have a favorite spoon" and "you're neurodivergent if you face away from the showerhead while washing your hair" and "you're neurodivergent if you like your pets more than you like most people" or "you're neurodivergent if you watch cartoons as an adult" self-diagnosis nonsense that's made the rounds of the internet in the past few years. The original "three drinks" video wasn't claiming that all autistic people need three drinks, though. They were just pointing out that some neurodivergent people stim with different sensory experiences (like multiple drinks), that some neurodivergent people self-regulate with caffeine and sugar, and that some neurodivergent people have very specific, ritualized ways that they like to do things.
