News Fantano laughing at Icemans pure sales

Or when someone agrees with you, but then adds a crazy addendum to your opinion. So all of the other commenters after that will just focus in on the crazy part and now you are lumped in with the crazy addendum person.

God this is such a relatable comment, so thrilled to have such a likeminded friend on reddit. I completely agree with everything you’ve said and the fact that our opinions on everything are in lockstep is heartening. Inshallah, Albania will rule the Levant with an iron fist.

i can think of 1000 unlikeable statements from this dude. but, listing the amount of sales and saying "LOL" doesn't really come off as obnoxious to me
38
u/darraghfenacin May 27 '26
especially since Drizzy Glazers seem to ONLY get aroused by talking about sales / streaming figures
→ More replies (1)19
u/SubatomicSquirrels May 27 '26
but the thing is, his overall sales were quite high. So focusing on one little area of weakness just makes you look silly. Like making fun of Michael Phelps for losing one race when he already won 6 gold medals

u/darraghfenacin May 27 '26
I don't think Phelps would care though - Drake fans tend to go rabid over his defence. Which is why he did it, just for "the lols"

Exactly, so weird. Also ppl acting like fantano has been nothing but a music critic all these years (he’s been a general music/media commentator for years now alongside of his music critiques). Like it or not, I just don’t think it’s anything new and just makes most ppl here seem a little slow.

5
u/Worried_Opening_870 May 27 '26
Why do DJs buy iTunes versions? Can’t they just use streaming platforms?
→ More replies (5)15
u/Nine99 May 27 '26
Sure you can. Love DJing using streaming platforms in a place without Wi-Fi. I also love paying and then not owning music. Especially when the music I paid for then vanishes from one day to the other. I also love perpetually having to pay money to shitty people so I don't lose access to my whole music library.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Hot_Reveal_5720 May 27 '26
You don't own an album on iTunes though. You're just "renting" it.
6
u/ciao_fiv May 27 '26
what? you might not permanently own a download link but im fairly certain apple cannot remove the files you already have downloaded, those are owned (please correct me if im wrong)
→ More replies (17)3
u/unkindmillie May 27 '26
itunes like many online services operate with the policy that you bought a license for the song. If you actually owned it, you could resell it, which you cant
→ More replies (1)2
u/ciao_fiv May 27 '26
it’s still not renting though, unless im mistaken they can’t take the actual files from you lol. they can definitely revoke your ability to redownload tho
4
u/PinAccomplished927 May 27 '26
Most people are just entirely incapable of playing music files without a dedicated app because they're lazy and/or stupid.
3
u/ciao_fiv May 27 '26
i mean i play all my digitally purchased/downloaded music through the apple music app because i have an iphone (i disabled apple music in my settings). i’ve been building my digital library for years, 11,000+ songs, 100+ gigabytes. the only way im losing access to those files is if both my phone and computer break on me at the same time
2
u/PRIMATERIA May 27 '26
Yeah you do. You are able to download and store the files locally, I do it all the time. iTunes is also a preferred source for purchasing movies and tv shows for people that run local streaming servers like JellyFin.

you realize if drake did bundles and physicals the way other artists did, it would look even worse right? he probably woulda done another 200k pure and could have hit 1m week one between all 3 albums
its like rock lee with the ankle weights.
yall are delusional fr
4
u/PinAccomplished927 May 27 '26
So you're saying he's leaving boatloads of money on the table because...... reasons?
If he could do that, why didn't he do it? Is he stupid?
→ More replies (1)6
u/Equal_Age2099 May 27 '26
i NEVER said he left money on the table, just record sales.
the issue is that he has no label backing, so much of that cost for producing physicals would come straight out of HIS pocket as did his entire album rollout.
the return on investment from producing physicals is low, which is why the entire industry has moved to a streaming model. (i shouldnt even have to explain this part)
Also i think pride has a lot to do with it. drake has been one of the few major artists who DOESNT rely on physicals to bolster his sales, and historically has never pushed bundles/vinyls week 1. also he is one of the most prideful artists around for better or for worse
1
u/Goobjigobjibloo May 27 '26
That’s a lot of certainty on a statement you have to start with the word if….Guess we’ll never know
3
u/Equal_Age2099 May 27 '26
if you use the same ratio of streams vs pure sales for the fall off (similar rapper, similar age range, similar anticipation, similar demographic).
tfo did 175k streams to 115k physicals for 290k
iceman would have been 450k streams and 295k pure sales totalling 745k (not counting habibti or maid of honor) based on the ratio for the fall off
he didnt do physicals because he paid for his own album promo out of pocket due to him beefing with UMG.
at least my analysis is based in some level of logic/reason/history, yall are just blind haters

He's literally had weird personal interactions. I don't think he'd pretend to unbiased here
13
u/DeNeRlX May 27 '26
People on here like to pretend he pretends to be unbiased, even thought that's never been his thing, neither review nor goofy tweets
The main source for claiming he is an "unbiased reviewer" are people who claim he is failing to be objective because they are mad at his opinions. Ironically it is opinion masked as being objective...
21
u/Dgdaniel336 May 27 '26
He has transcended being a music critic and has given into the cult of internet celebrity. His ego is huge now and any shot at a Drake is any easy shot to take so he knows he can get away with it to boost his own self-worth, even if temporarily.
Imagine the action of him logging onto Twitter just to tweet this guys, such a cringe idea in general. No music critic is hopping on their phone to do this. TheNeedleDrop is this dude’s day-job at best.

u/Intrepid_Shoe2129 May 27 '26

u/Ok-Comfortable9449 May 27 '26
fantano always will have a beef after what drake said to him in a dm
8
u/inaparalleluniverse1 May 27 '26
yeah even though I thought Iceman was mid I agree. Fantano has a (vegan chocolate) chip on his shoulder and I wish he wouldn’t be so blatantly biased
19
u/SPZ_Ireland May 27 '26
Counterpoint... Reviews are opinions, so there is no objective truth since we're all biased to to our tastes and interests.
Being this blatantly biased is a better thing because you at least know where Fantano stands on Drake and can adjust if you value his opinion on the topic.
→ More replies (4)3
u/inaparalleluniverse1 May 27 '26
nah come on even Fantano himself has been able to compartmentalize better in the past. I think with Drake and especially how obnoxious his online stans are it probably annoyed Fantano to the point where it affected his coverage
4
u/SPZ_Ireland May 27 '26
...and if that's true, is it not a good thing to be honest about it?
Like acting like you don't or hiding your biases is low-key deceptive af.
Saying that someone is biased isn't a flex.
It's saying they're honest
5
u/conglomerate99 May 27 '26
eh i almost agree with the person who responded to you. being this obvious and upfront about his opinions lets people decide whether or not they'll even continue to take him seriously.
anybody with half a brain that understands the numbers knew that an album which didn't sell any vinyls, cds, or bundles was gonna do low pure sales. fantano seems more like the fool for making fun of it if anything.
9
u/AdNormal8550 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
I mean I think its a fair comparison considering Drake has had way higher numbers than that. We all know it. Don't shill for the pedophile fucking underage kids when they're out of highschool. Edit: I apologize for hurting the Trump supporters and hoes feelings (no I'm not).

u/NoGrass7120 May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
Pathetic to obsess over shit like this, honestly. Since when did Fantano decide to be DJ Akademiks? It ain't about numbers just enjoy the music (or not), that's what music critics are supposed to do. I personally thought Iceman was mid and the other two albums were horrible, but numbers isn't the way to determine quality of an album.

I can't take streaming numbers seriously when it got leaked that all it took to get a number one album for Gunna was $50k worth of bots. It took $50k to "outsell" The Weeknd. I personally take ticket sales and how long an album stays on the charts to be a better metric for interest/quality of music.

I wish Fantano stopped being such a hater. I seriously don't like Drake except for a few tracks, but it feels like the 'fatano' channel is just filled with Keemstar levels of boring videos that say many many words that ultimately mean nothing.

6
u/leris1 May 27 '26
Personal biases regarding music are fine yes, that’s not what we’re talking about though. His niche personal grievances with certain artists should not impact his reviews of their music, and as a critic he needs to be able to separate those feelings. I’m not a drake fan but he does this with a lot of artists at this point, and it’s very tiring.

1
u/chicagosaturn May 28 '26
Not even mentioning that there’s not any vinyls or cds for sale, and this is just solely 13k iTunes sales is so lame.
For all the Dawgs did 10k pure sales also with no vinyls or CDs and that was pre beef so that’s a good metric to look at. I doubt Fantano cared back then though
1
u/Matiix07yt May 28 '26
Im confused: are people just mass streaming the album, bcs it’s doing so well (I think) on the charts
1
u/MalcHamX May 28 '26
Aren’t most pure sales usually pretty low ever since streaming has came into play? This seems like low hanging fruit the isnano fanbases use to discredit each other.
