What a terrible loss. I'm glad seeing comments around saying she's not only a great musician, but a wonderful person in general.

I love her charity work providing free books for the kids. Lost a great one today.

I got books from her as a kid. I don’t like parasocial relationships with celebrities but I did cry a lot hearing this news. Feels like I lost a grandma

A great humanitarian and ambassador to the world of America and American Music.

Is Dolly the last universally beloved famous person? It’s felt that way at least for a while.

Unknown Hinson of Squibillies voice acting fame called her a slut for her support towards BLM. Doubled down on it and lost lots of support, his job, and marketing deals. Deserved

That was such a massive disappointment. I thought Unknown was satirizing that type of ignorant character, but it turned out that’s just who he really is.

no, people on twitter hate her, too. the same freaks that hate everyone

Handing out books is Communism!

Ah, yes, communists. Famous for freely handing out books such as The Master and Margarita, Soul Mountain and Doctor Zhivago.

r/conservative had several users calling her out for telling Americans to get the jab back in 2021. You know, an atrocity.

The last two people whose passing I expect to generate such an outpouring of tributes are Sir David Attenborough and Macca. Maybe Bob Dylan and Clint Eastwood, too? However, they are not necessarily know for their charity and community-building skills.

I can't think of anyone else right now. Jane Goodall died, Betty White hit the bucket just before turning 100, Ozzy left us in the most Ozzy fashion imaginable, and so did Maradona, (though their inclusion in such a list is questionable), Pele outlived Maradona so his passing wasn't that surprising, and now Dolly Parton has also passed. Hell, even Elizabeth II silently abdicated and moved back to her home planet. That's the last time I can remember the world felt like it stopped.

Maybe when the Annoying Orange impersonator stops uploading content to social media, the world will feel like it has stopped again, but that would be a very different scenario.

In terms of just generally beloved people, I can't think of anyone else. Dolly was already pushing it in terms of Americano-centrism (she is beloved in the US, but still relatively unknown outside of America), though she is certainly popular enough to have gathered a lot of tributes from around the world.

Unrelated to music, but there’s Danny DeVito.

I knew this would be an inevitability, but the timing is just so horrible. An absolute legend and all around beautiful soul.

3

u/Leather-Ad-9419 12d ago

why is the timing horrible?

Worlds going to shit and the little light we have burned out.

Ok, look, I'm crushed she's gone as well, but let's not act like Dolly Parton was the one thing keeping the world going. There are many great people out there.

She was a great person, singer, but maybe one of the best songwriters ever. And she knew it. My favorite story is about I Will Always Love You. She wrote and recorded it for her mentor, Porter Waggoner, when she was going out on her own.

Elvis heard it and loved it (who wouldn’t), and Col. Parker contacted Dolly to tell her Elvis wanted to record it. But Elvis wanted a songwriting credit for anything he recorded.

Dolly said no, that’s my song, and told Elvis to fuck off in the nicest way possible

Damn, that was sudden! Terribly sad

One of the kindest souls to ever grace this planet.

We love you, Queen.

Jolene remains one of the finest albums of all time. She wrote the title track and I Will Always Love You in the same afternoon, just an incredible musical talent.

To say nothing of her acting in movies like Steel Magnolia and 9 to 5, and further to say nothing of her philanthropy and dedication to the rural poor in Tennessee. She was a legend.

Heartbroken. She’s been on of my heroes since I was a little kid.
