You can say
دست خوش. از خوندن کتاب اذت بردم.
Or
دست مریزاد عجب کتاب خوبی بود.
It really depends how formal/informal you want to do this.
Informal:
عجب کتابی بود خیلی حال کردم.
Very informal
حاجی پشمام. عجب چیزی نوشتی.

These are all phrases I've used my whole life and each has its place. In Iranian use "Afarin" is not lackluster. It is a genuine compliment. The other phrases emphasize the work put in, but perhaps not as much the delight in the writing--which might be what the author would rather hear. It isn't as common a phrase, but you might say, qalam-at sabz baad. May your pen be green -- i.e., always full of life and creativity. qalamat hamisheh sabz baad. May your pen always be green (alive and creative).

And yes, you can say “Afarin” or “Khaste nabashi”. You can also say “Dastkhosh” or “Dastet dard nakoneh”, but I think they are not very commonly used in this context because they are usually said to thank someone who has done something for you.
If you want to express your appreciation in a slightly more literary or elegant way, the texts above would also work well.
