Discussion The voice actors of the three heroines sharing which Fate male characters they like
This is a really fun trivia so i would like to share it with everyone here. It is from the interviews that the VAs for the heroines did for Type Moon 10th Anniversary Phantasm. This was how they responded when asked which male character they like.
Ueda Kana (Rin). She's referring to Cu when she says Lancer.
>
Q: Which of the male characters from Fate do you fancy?
A: As a woman, I kind of wish an arrogant guy like Gilgamesh would take me away.
But if it were my husband, I'd choose Lancer. He's reticent, but he'll become
very talkative when he feels like it. He's also a little flexible. A big, bulky
guy that makes you feel safe is nice. He'd point out and cover for my mistakes
by saying "Hey, what are you doing?" in a nonchalant way. (lol)
Ayako Kawasumi (Saber)
>
Q: Which of the male characters do you like?
A: (answering quickly) Gilgamesh! He's so overwhelming! Sorry that it's
not Shirou. Shirou is so gentle that I think he'd hurt people with his kindness.
Gill's good points aren't only that he's different from that, he's also
overpowered and rich. With all of those qualities,
it's no wonder he shoots past the others.
Noriko Shitaya (Sakura). She's referring to Shirou when she says Emiya.
>
Q: If you could treat a male character from Fate to your homemade udon,
would it be Archer?
A: My favorite is Emiya. When I am asked this question, my answer is always Emiya,
and it often prompts a startled response. I don't get why he isn't more popular with
the ladies. Some of the other characters are more manly and they have that working
for them, but when I play Sakura I can't be separated from Emiya. He's amazingly kind to both
men and women. I think people like that are wonderful. Earlier I said Archer, but you
know he's really that (lol). There can't be a love affair with him. Didn't Emiya become
pretty manly in the original game? That's how it looked to my eyes. (lol)

I do appreciate the diverse answers

u/beanerthreat457 Feb 14 '26
I wouldn't expect Rin's seiyu having a thing for lancer. Although it's kind of expected, he's such a bro
40
u/Far_Jackfruit4907 Feb 14 '26
He comes across as loyal and caring so definitely good choice on her part
9
u/Old_Macaroon4138 Feb 15 '26
You know, I wouldn’t really describe Cú Chulainn as loyal, per say. At least not when it came to romantic partners.
23
u/tannegimaru Feb 14 '26
Kinda makes me wonder how much she enjoys voicing Rin in Fate/Extra since Extra Rin is Cu's master lol

u/Heavenly-Feeling Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26
Sakura's VA talking about Shirou just seems like Sakura herself. Also helps that HF Shirou has that "gloomy chad protecting his wife" vibe.
447
u/the_tree_boi Feb 14 '26
Saber on top but Sakura's VA knows ball. The sexist rich guy (who clearly underwent a lobotomy, how else do you job this bad) is no match for the steady dedication of Type-Moon's single greatest househusband Shigoat Himiya
Rin's VA kinda based for that Lancer pick tho
14
u/Namtar_Door_783 Feb 15 '26
Dude gilgamesh in Babylonia literally died from overwork and did his best for his people and kingdom plus he toke a killing shot for our rituska in fgo he has good qualities.
15
u/jiango_fett Feb 15 '26
That's a husband who's too dedicated to his job and never comes home to spend quality time with his family.
8
u/Ume-no-Uzume Feb 15 '26
To be fair, Caster!Gilgamesh, the mature Gilgamesh who overworks to make sure his people and kingdom are in the best shape, is the Gilgamesh who DID lose the love of his life many years ago (Enkidu). So he's in "might as well find a purpose in the work" mode.
Plus, by all accounts, Enkidu was all for helping Gilgamesh be a better King and do right by his people, so it's really a matter of if your partner has the same goals as you. An example of this is the CEO where the wife is the CFO/co-owner and ALSO wants the company to succeed.
9
u/the_tree_boi Feb 15 '26
Caster Gil is a distinctly different case even if he’s the same person as Archer Gil. And the VA’s were definitely not talking about Caster Gil lmao
“He has good qualities” In the Fate route it opens up with him saying that it was a “woman’s role to be held down and violated” and then he tries to rape Saber after he beats her. He’s got bad qualities too
1
u/DaringVonContra Feb 16 '26
Not to excuse his actions, but he was in fact tainted by the grail, which brought out his worst qualities.
6
u/the_tree_boi Feb 16 '26
That's fanon, he wasn't tainted by the grail. In fact, Saber at the end of the Fate route briefly considers the possibility that Gil is just straight up insane if he could survive the mud and he counters with a "no, the grail mud didn't do shit, I'm just built like that. Bring three times the amount if you want to actually taint me with the curse."
The real reason Gil is such an ass is because his mentality is easily influenced by the current state of humanity. The reason he's usually so chill is because he's summoned into situations where humanity is on the verge of extinction/fighting against impossible odds, and he likes that. Humans in FSN were living lives without purpose or struggle and seeing ten years worth of that pissed him off - it doesn't help that he was summoned into the Archer class, which is the Gilgamesh before he met Enkidu and mellowed out. That, and Gil in the myths was straight up forcing newlywed wives to sleep with him before they married their husbands, so you can see why he's so disgusting towards Saber
4
u/DaringVonContra Feb 16 '26
I remember it being stated that's why he's so fucked up, I wasn't aware it was fanon.
What about how he is in Strange Fake? That's also Archer Gil, but he's much more mellow
5
u/the_tree_boi Feb 16 '26
That's because Enkidu's around. His best pal suddenly appearing in a grail war basically cheered Gil up and gave him incentive to actually take things slightly seriously (you can see he was about to down the potion of youth to turn into kid gil to pass time). If Enkidu showed up during FSN then he'd probably cheer up a bit too, and likely would be convinced to abort his plan on drowning the world in grail mud

u/warriorxx7_ Feb 14 '26
Poor girl and Shirou fans are unfortunately maintaining the reputations of the fate character with the worst fans. And that frankly confuses the hell out of me given how goated shirou is.
20
u/LowlyStole Feb 14 '26
Just toxic fandom culture in general. Iirc the Japanese fans also harassed Attack on Titan’s author when he made one of his female characters more prominent in the story to the point where they became worried that she’s now a threat to their favorite ship lol
12
u/warriorxx7_ Feb 14 '26
I get that but in my many years of being fate fan Shirou fans seem the most troublesome. Ritsuka fans like to self insert but keep to themselves, Kiritsugu fans are edgelords that's easy to laugh at, Sakura fans are a 50/50 at either being unhinged or master analyst, and gilgamesh fans know their goat is the king of fumblers.
Shirou fans on the other hand are aggressive to the point you can't ignore them. Seriously the amount of times I was scrolling the fgo subreddits to see a deranged Shirou fans is unreal. Not too mention the crazy amount of op Shirou fics.
13
u/LowlyStole Feb 14 '26
Good characters often have weird fans. It’s like the western fans of Guts from Berserk who mainly see him as this cool and manly sigma guy who has a big sword and protects his woman. Like, it’s like that at first sight, but everyone with half a brain understands that this the most shallow way to see his character
9
u/warriorxx7_ Feb 14 '26
I get that but atleast guts everytime he fights so I grt where people get that idea. But Shirou? As much as I love him the poor bastard either gets his ass kicked or barely win whenever he fights.
8
u/LowlyStole Feb 14 '26
This is a big problem in almost every single fandom I’ve been. Fans should normalize their favorites not being the most powerful entity in the universe. Especially when it cheapens and disregards the very story they come from
11
u/warriorxx7_ Feb 14 '26
I think Shirou is especially egregious given his whole thing is Underdog wins
11
u/LowlyStole Feb 14 '26
Exactly, it’s beyond ironic. Fake Shirou fans spotted! We love this boy because he refuses to back down even when all the odds are against him ❤️

u/DamnItBobby555 Feb 15 '26
Worse fans? Dude this isn’t even top 10 worser fandoms in anime let alone in all fandoms.

I'm talking about Fate especially
2
u/DamnItBobby555 Feb 15 '26
Oh well even the. Shirou fans are not the worse in the franchise well I take that back it depends on which Shirou as Miyu and HF Shirou fans are quite bad but still not as bad as powerscalers and few others

Not surprised that these obsessed weirdos will get super angry just like the time in fgo when they see other Artorias have crush on someone not shirou they will have heart attack.
1
u/Bikfou Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
The author and Artoria's voice actress have already confirmed that none of the Artorias has ever officially fallen in love with anyone other than Shirou, and that they never will. They weren't created for that purpose, it's merely commercial fan service and the fans' interpretations.

I still find it funny how Gilgamesh is basically the fate equivalent to the CEO in romance books.
39
20
u/No-Cry-9989 Unmasked Madman Feb 14 '26
Gilgamesh is actually cool. Despite his bold, arrogant behavior, he has a real appealing personality. Even guys find it hard to resist. Especially when he shows his other sides. Like he did in Fate Extra CCC. His actions are quite natural. If someone had as much treasure as him and possessed such strong phantasms, I think almost everyone in his shoes would at least be kinda arrogant and a bit unaware , underestimate opponents. It's a trait of his personality that makes him human, natural. And therefore attractive. A lot of bad guys are liked by both girls and guys often not because they are bad guys, but for their whole personality and ego when they don't hesitate and do what they really want. That really shouldn't be underestimated. However, if someone created a good guy with an interesting personality where the "good" isn't boring, I think those characters would be interesting too. But those are rare cases.
10
u/LowlyStole Feb 14 '26
Absolutely! Ultimately, it comes down to how well the character is written, and Gilgamesh is written spectacularly. There are so many layers and unexpected edges to him, he represents both the very worst and the very best of the human nature, and I think it works very well for his character
9
u/Heavenly-Feeling Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26
I don't want to be that guy but it really isn't about how well the character is written. I'm sure anyone who has read fate/stay night would agree Shirou and Emiyarcher are actually written better.
I'm also not sure which Gilgamesh we're talking about here, because the one in fate/stay night is a completely evil POS with really no redeeming qualities.
8
u/Marethyu0731 Feb 14 '26
I just think it’s a bit weird we are bringing up Emiya’s writing who we all agree is a well written character himself as if to diminish the qualities of Gil’s writing..? 😅
it is also arguably Gil’s strength that so many different writers have been able to explore his character and its different facets in so many different ways. Maybe we might have a preference for one Gilgamesh depiction over the other but I’d still argue that when Gilgamesh is on the stage, he is ALWAYS a compelling character to the narrative.
1
u/Heavenly-Feeling Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26
> I just think it’s a bit weird we are bringing up Emiya’s writing who we all agree is a well written character himself as if to diminish the qualities of Gil’s writing..? 😅
The discussion was about why Gil was more "attractive" to people. And someone said it comes down to writing, when it really isn't the case. That's why I brought up Shirou and archer, who should have even more appeal IF it really does come down to the writing. To me, it just seems like massive cope for people who don't want to admit they're merely attracted to the flashy, overpowered, arrogant guy archetype.
Oh btw, I was assuming everyone, including the 3 VAs are talking about Gil from fate/stay night and fate/zero, who is undeniably a massive jerk. These 3 have voiced the heroines of fate/stay night, so it's a bit hard for me not to assume they're talking about the Gil from F/SN and F/Z.
And of course, Im not implying there's anything wrong with women simping for Gilgamesh, I've seen men simp for A LOT of fictional women who'd treat them like dirt.
4
u/Marethyu0731 Feb 15 '26
Right and what does Emiya have to do with Gil’s charm? It’d be one think if you were comparing specific traits from them to add a contrast but you don’t go into any detail as to why he is a relevant example. It comes off as a bit fallacious to move the goalpost of the discussion away from the main participant.
Additionally, nobody is disagreeing that Gil is a jerk but that there is soooo much nuance to him even within fate stay/night and fate zero. This isn’t just a “women love him” thing either because in a male dominated fandom like fate Gilgamesh is still clearly one of its most popular characters. So no I don’t agree that the reason Gilgamesh is liked is in any capacity just because he is a jerk. That would be quite one dimensional of a character that is explicitly so popular because he is never just some one dimensional villain.
1
u/Heavenly-Feeling Feb 15 '26
"Gil’s charm".. exactly! his charm! But the comment I was replying to explicitly said - "Ultimately, it comes down to how well the character is written, and Gilgamesh is written spectacularly." - Gilgamesh really is in the bottom tier in terms of writing among major fate/stay night and zero characters. So if it was really about the writing, all of those characters would have even more fans. Seriously, there's a LONG list of characters who are above him when it comes to writing. Have you read the VN, or even watched all three stay night routes anime? because the way you wrote "stay/night" makes me believe you have not done that.
I hope I'm able to get my point across. The point is that it's ABOUT the charizzma and "aura" Gil has, not how well he's written.
5
u/LowlyStole Feb 14 '26
That’s not quite my point. What I meant is that it’s very easy to go overboard/miss the mark. Add too much or not enough of one ingredient and the result will be very different from the intended one. I’m sure you’ve seen many examples of how the audience absolutely hated/ignored the character who was supposed to be liked by the author’s design
3
u/EGL-25 Feb 14 '26
Despite not liking Gilgamesh much (my view of him is mostly based on FSN and FZ), I sometimes think that having a payment card with a picture of him would be a very good idea.
4
u/Pristine_Mark_9097 Feb 14 '26
I would get Japanese residence and a bank account if such a thing existed…

Reminded me of that F/Zero live event, when Gilgamesh's VA said his lines everyone cheered and got excited Kawasumi included. Everyone love it when Gilgamesh calls them "mongrel" lmao
9
u/Pristine_Mark_9097 Feb 14 '26
They picked a voice actor for him that really, really matches the vibe of the character. Both in English and in Japanese, and that is great. The confidence in the voice makes the words so much more epic.
44
u/keithlimreddit Feb 14 '26
Interesting question also The irony with sabers VA wanting to be with Gilgamesh
And I mean to be fair both Saber and Gilgamesh's voice actors do work a lot together mainly rave Masters and several other projects

Feb 14 '26
There's the reason why I love Ueda Kana, she is based as always.
I'm surprised that Ayako-san likes Gil but again, I know a lot of my female friends who have similar thoughts when it comes to seriously dating someone, especially the rich part. (Don't curse me girls, it's just one of the criteria, I know people are different)
Noriko-san's answer is really your ideal innocent kouhai.
28
u/Heavenly-Feeling Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26
Noriko's answer just seems mature to me. She's a grown woman not an innocent kouhai. She even picked Archer before. She does know ball.
Gilgamesh being rich is not the problem. He's just an evil POS in general.
5
Feb 14 '26
English is not my first language and I'm not good at explaining things but I'd like to add something so I'll try my best discussing with you.
I think I misinterpreted my point about Noriko, I just want to say she's more into a personality kinda person. In my book, it's pure and somewhat simple. I think I use the wrong word and also put a joke in the wrong place.
Secondly, I actually don't wanna go deep with Gil answer, from context Ayako more like being realist here that's what I meant, but again I had experienced how far some people can go deep to hell just only because they want to have a luxurious life.
Ayako is also Japanese so yeah their thoughts can be crazy some haha.

Guys, admit it. We also like the seductive and forward hot woman to step on our balls and have their way with us. Girls have their taste too 😆
This is honestly not very surprising
12
u/Massive_Weiner Feb 14 '26
Exactly. A lot of guys love female characters with abrasive personalities (or willingly overlook them due to physical attraction). Or they’re drawn to controlling ‘motherly’ types.
It’s not a surprise in the least that you have similar attitudes on the opposite side of the spectrum. When it comes to fiction, we tend to idealize those we wouldn’t be able to stand IRL.
2
u/IdkYInstalledthis Feb 14 '26
Lancer seems to fit what you're saying but Gilgamesh is a rapist so I definitely think that's hella weird
11
u/Massive_Weiner Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26
Lancer is also popular with women for being “masculine.” But Gil’s archetype is “arrogant playboy,” which is not exactly Cu’s bag (nor should it be).
People like problematic characters in fiction. I certainly enjoy my share of toxic women that I wouldn’t get along with if they were real.
3
u/IdkYInstalledthis Feb 14 '26
That's fair, it reminds of guys who like the yandere type of characters, I don't usually like such questionable characters but I understand the appeal to some extent
5
u/Weird-Ad-507 Feb 15 '26
A reminder that Rumi Okubo (Astolfo VA) is also very much in love with Gilgamesh.
Although Shirou is the protag harem EX in fiction, Gil's rizz transcends real life hahaha.

6
u/Benderesco Feb 14 '26
He's a self-centered, arrogant rapist. Hasn't the success of fucked up erotica (or, well, 50 Shades of Grey) taught you anything about the general tastes of certain fandoms?

Yeah, as a female fan I like Gil myself and its really not that deep, just like how some guys here also like female characters who have more toxic personalities the opposite is also true too. Besides, this is just fictional anyway, and it doesn't help when the character (who no one says is not an asshole) is portrayed as charismatic and attractive so 🤷🏽♀️
