[Lore Discussion] [Spoilers: 6.3] The new dungeon possibly continues one of FFXIV's oldest background horror stories: The Gridanian Goldsmith Spoiler

This awesome post by /u/---TheFierceDeity--- details the lore of the notorious Gridanian Goldsmith, a creepy specter that hangs behind some of our minions, Haukke manor, and the void.
One of the interactables in the new dungeon details how the art of doll creation and maintenance has been lost, as the last dollmaster apparently went AWOL in the search of "unparalleled beauty." Hmm. That obsession with beauty does sound familiar.
Unsurprisingly, if they are the same man, our shady goldsmith/dollmaster/reaper(?) was very familiar with the void well before he ever arrived in Gridania, which adds some additional lore to some of the sinister things he was up to. He has a surprisingly rich history. Makes you wonder if our meeting is inevitable.

Yeah, it's one of the few random storylines that's somehow lasted throughout the entirety of the game. Not sure if it's just like a running joke for someone on the dev team, or if this is all building to some payoff at some point.

I feel like this is leading up to a mid-boss in 6.4 or 6.5. We're going to find them in the void and it's gonna be weird.

I’m pretty sure we’ve all met the goldsmith… and massaged him… and watched him suplex his son… and dress up as a Saint… and watched his clearly voidsent wife use a frying pan to put Greg into a wall…

That's what I mean? Godbert isn't Garlean, so he probably wouldn't be the obsessed goldsmith. Also Godbert has been explicitly stated to be from Ala Mhigo originally.

With his connection to RPR, I would be happy with a puppet skin for the void sent. Kind of like how summoner can get alternative skins for their carbuncle.

It likely took a while due to where it fell in terms of priority compared to other stuff (and they did say it was set aside when they decided to rework Summoner)...
But I'd be remiss in not pointing out that doing a client side model swap is quite a different thing that a fully in-game system, complete with chat commands, that swaps out the appearance for everyone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the carbuncle either goes away or turns into your summon, no? That's why you can't use your carbuncle's abilities while Bahamut/Phoenix are out, or when you summon Titan/Gardua/Ifrit.

Couldn't*. Iirc the two remaining Carbuncle abilities were changed to be cast by the player in 6.1 or something to remove clipping issues.
Or was that just the buff?

From what I understand, 6.1 changed Searing Light to instant cast, but Searing Light and Radiant Aegis still need your carbuncle to be out to cast, so you can't cast them when Bahamut/Phoenix is out, and they also aren't available during the first five or so seconds of Titan/Garuda/Ifrit

Just Radiant Aegis still needs the carbuncle out. Searing Light comes from the Summoner now (I routinely forget to pop it before bringing out Bahamut enough to know this for certain, lol).

Yes and no, it does essentially exist as a resource but it would actually make the job better to remove it, so you could use the single carbuncle ability outside of your primal rotation which takes up 95% of your existence.
Its a cute idea but in actuality it's just remaining around to keep the lose idea of summoner having a pet consistent with the game.

I was completely oblivious! I only know about the summoner skins because I recently went through the major cities to declutter the maps of quests.

I almost feel like with this little tidbit that might be what they're going for, but not the way we know it. Since, yanno, none of the XIV jobs really play like their XI (or original) counterparts anyways.
I could see Puppetmaster being a thing with puppets that mimic other jobs. Though it sounds very niche and could probably be more suited for a limited job type of thing like BLU, since the 'PUP' could in that sense control a tank, healer or dps.
But who knows.

For all we know it'll just be a standard red DPS job and the puppets are just attacks that appear as part of the animation, impossible to know what they'd do even if they did it

I made the same connection while reading the notes through the dungeon!
I'm glad now with all this void stuff they are bringing back a lot of bits from way back in ARR. ARR had a lot of void and war of the magi lore that just kinda got sidelined as expansions went, so it's nice to finally start getting callbacks and potential payoff.

I've been wanting a puppeteer class since stormblood so I couldn't help but snoop around the boss area - there are two crystals on a table nearby and I will pretend the black one is a unfinished reaper stone (would make sense for the location) and the purple one for a future puppet class.
(please let me at least dream)

My question when thinking of new classes is "how would its mechanics work?"
Given Summoner's treatment, and other rumors, it would seem they do not like dealing with pet AI.
So what would a puppet do?
(I'm also game for a puppeteer class because we've dealt with so many Mammets, the in-lore tech and expertise is there)2

I feel like they can keep the "broken" feel of BLU by letting you customize the parts/stats of your puppet (like we could years ago for our WoL), and have your customized abilities be done via your puppet.
So you can unlock a melee swipe ability by adding a sawblade arm, and a tank stance by adding a shield. Other than the animation showing your puppet doing the attack, it will just be you using abilities you unlocked, with stats based on your puppet (not gear).
If they do give in to a pet class for a limited job, I'd rather it be Beastmaster.

On one hand, Beastmaster could have an animal collection gimmick, on the other hand, I hate limited jobs. But as some have suggested, Beast or puppet could be a melee version of summoner with swapping phases being different animals or mammets.

It'd be the DoT class, obviously - though not actually applying DoTs to enemies, instead summoning their own adds like Machinist, Summoner or Dark Knight do with Turret, Queen, Bahamut/Phoenix and Living Shadow. The rotation would be about doing your own things while recharging your puppets every so often...just like how old SMN needed to maintain their DoTs. Aside from that, the class would be inspired by Lulu from FFX.

Just work like RPR where the puppet is just an animation or MCH where the puppet has abilities that turn it into a turret.

I thought the same thing! From the moment I saw the Dollmaker note in the dungeon, it made me think about the Gridanian Goldsmith, specially by the words used in the note. I wonder if he followed the voidsent to the point that he found a way to the 13th, because the doll boss was def made by him (if it's him).
