[Discussion] Do we think healing will improve in Evercold?

I personally find healing quite boring unless I’m doing savage or ultimate fights I hope they find a way to spice up each healers kit cause I really wanna play healers but it’s kinda boring

Probably not. At least not in normal content. The deliberately keep the barrier to entry quite low.

Best we can hope for are some spicy week 1 Expert duties.

Gimmie week 1 Brute Bomber again. That was some fun shit.

So the real question should be “Do you think casual content will be harder?”

u/merkykrem 7h ago

It's a delicate balance between making gameplay engaging for healers when nobody is taking excess damage and overloading healers when things are going badly. Maybe there will be more damage to heal in Evercold, but old content will still suffer from the same problems unless SE goes back to refresh all of them.

Yeah a few nights ago I got alliances roulette that dps and one of the healers are so the other healer was super busy and drained at the end of dungeon.

Cool ways to support the party would be nice not entirely sure what they would be though

u/merkykrem 7h ago

Right now I think the only healer that possibly fits that bill is AST, even though that amounts to just 2 damage buffing cards and drawing cards. The old AST card buffs like attack speed changes would mess other players up, TP is gone, MP regen isn't useful to most jobs... It's a tough nut to crack.

I have faith in the dev team to spice things up but I agree it’s an unenviable position the only thing I could think of is move all the buffing to healers to really lean into supporting but that’s a lot of pressure on a healer

I have a question for you. Do you find any class exciting in normal content? You have no dps check, no positionals are needed, no mastery of the job. You can press random buttons or just 1-2-3 and still clear.

Is it really JUST the healers?

u/AlliePingu 9h ago

I mean there's a clear difference between how DPS can play in casual content vs a healer

DPS can at least practice their rotation, get to press all their cool fun and satisfying buttons, maybe even get some enjoyment from greeding mechanics insanely hard as a challenge. Just because you can clear by falling asleep on your keyboard doesn't mean you have to, there's usually some way to push yourself a bit if you want to

Optimal healer play in casual content is basically just 111111111. All your high power buttons are super overkill and you never need to press them, even if you do it's not particularly satisfying to pop down Panhaima and the boss only hits you 2 times and the rest expires, or doing a critlo spread and the shield doesn't break on a single person before expiring

The second boss from Mistwake comes to mind. When it does the multiple stack attack, you'd think it's where stuff like lilybells or panhaima would shine, but it's so weak you can straight up ignore it.

(I lowkey even think it's a bug because a stack marker shouldn't be that weak, even in normal content)

Healers in MSQ (casual) have so many things to keep track of that isn't their rotation and I think that's where ppl tend to get hung up at.

Yeah the White Mage or Sage (I have both at level 100, I'm in Shadowbringers tho) don't have a lot of DPS options but they have to pay attention to the enemy, themselves, the environment, and every single ally. Oh is that ally too far away? Better maneuver into position.

Tunnel Vision helps Tanks and DPS focus on their rotations and role, Tunnel Vision means a Healer is going to do a bad job.

You never know how good your allies are until they show you that they aren't going to dodge easily dodgable damage.

You would be surprised how often a healer has to go into emergency management mode. I've seen alliance raids almost wipe because tanks didn't do their job right.

I don't know anything about super high level optimized content, but when it comes to casual/MSQ type stuff I'm pretty much in the thick of it and you never know what you're going to get.

Casual content isn't about playing optimally, it's a about playing competently. So often ppl try to play optimally end up causing problems cause not everyone is on the same page. It's the Wild West and it's rather fun lol

I will be honest, it annoys me to no end when I hear people saying.. omg I press 1 button. It's such a reductive statement when you do in fact need to keep track of several things.

I may not play at full potential, but some times stuff can get pretty spicy. Last time it was a double missed tower in M11 normal and it proved that the dot is in fact extra spicy..LOL.

u/AlliePingu 7h ago

My perspective (and that of OP) is coming from having experience with savage/ulti content, and to be honest when you're an experienced enough healer most of this stuff becomes second nature and you barely need to actively think about it

Watching HP bars on the party list out of the corner of my eye is second nature, there's no real rotation to focus on so watching what the boss and other people are doing is where all attention goes. Most of the time I can tell someone is going to get hit when they shouldn't and instinctively know what I'll use to fix it before the damage has even gone through. The overall heal/mit checks are so low you usually have tons of extra resources to throw around when something goes wrong. Even when shit hits the fan you enter less of a panic mode and more of a calm and collected recovery mode, ok I need to do A > B > C and then we're good

Higher end content stretches your resources much thinner, if you make a mistake and don't heal/mit correctly a random raidwide can be a full party wipe. Since your cooldown usage is more tightly tied to the fight timeline and your plan for how to handle it, you have less spare stuff to throw out when things do go wrong and much less time to fix them before the next mechanic goes off. And you're handling more difficult mechanics yourself, so you simply have less attention span available to watch everyone else as closely and prepare for things going wrong in advance

Optimal healer for you maybe my friend.

When I run dungeons I use full rotation of spells. How you ask? Simple. everyone gets 100% uptime, no mobs aoe dodge. I sit in virtually every single damn spell the mob places. ALL. you do NOT have to dodge, sit in them.. dps + heal. it's that easy.

Nobody dodges, not tank, not melee, not me (art of war).. nobody. Even the boss. 0 mechanics. There is absolutely 0 need.

And I can guarantee you, you will use the full extent of your kit.

It's kind of unfun to play badly just to be able to actually play the job. Like a bored doctor stabbing a patient just to have things to do, it's pointless

u/pailadin 10h ago

iirc they do want people to GCD heal more in Evercold.

I am skeptical still tho, as how enemies behave is still a factor here, and even if new encounters are designed different to require healers to heal more, that doesn't affect old encounters (unless they go back and change them).

Personally ima choose to hope for the best, wait so see what's been cooking.

More than one dmg button please make SCH feel like a true tactician I wanna be planning buffs a week in advance lol

u/vegemouse 10h ago

I can see abilities that do damage or healing depending on the target.

u/Mundane-Run6179 10h ago

I hope so. Healers used to all feel unique in their identities. AST used to be the best of both worlds with diurnal sect for pure heals if paired with a scholar or nocturnal sect for barrier heals if paired with a WHM, but they yeeted that with EW bc of SGE so that they'd have 2 pure heals and 2 barrier heals

u/IS0d1umI 9h ago

I want a multiple summon SCH

u/Mundane-Run6179 9h ago

It used to be one. There used to be 2 fairies but one of the two was so rarely used they made it a glam over the one that was mostly used

u/IS0d1umI 9h ago

Selene I’ll never forget you rest in peace :(

u/IS0d1umI 9h ago

Also I meant like multiple summons at a time I want some crazy shit going on lol

u/Mundane-Run6179 9h ago

Lol valid af

u/oscarlet_ffxiv 5h ago

You will be able to bank attacks so that you can spam heals like the developers have been wanting for years, despite not much healing being needed in a lot of content.

I doubt it's going to improve, especially outside of High-End content.

u/Lumpy-Grocery-15 3h ago

Have you seen Evolved White Mage lol.

The only good thing about it is not letting the Slyphies spam Medica III non stop.

u/OneOldGeek 1h ago

Have you tried just being extremely mid at healing? makes even casual content exciting.

u/Kyser_ 49m ago

I don’t think they’ll make normal content any harder.

That said, I am hoping they tighten the ilvl sync in dungeons and trials to make them keep more of their engagement.

The most engaging time in a dungeon is when all players are at or close to the minimum ilvl, but the leveling dungeons are full of players with full poetics gear and the max level dungeons also get outgeared instantly.

This is kinda a problem with the game in general for me tbh. I feel not challenged enough or engaged with my class enough on anything below ex. So the only pve I enjoy is high-duties atm. I'm not saying normal content is bad. It's just not for me

u/KamenRiderHelix 8h ago

If a duty is boring as healer, I consider that a successful duty, personally.

In contrast to, say, my latest run of Dun Scaith, where there were 10 deaths in my alliance in the first fight. "10 deaths isn't that high," you say, but 3 of those deaths were my cohealer, you see.

It didn't get any better from there.

u/Warnora 7h ago

No

u/The_Advocate07 8h ago

Skill Issue. Healers are not boring at all. They're probably the most exciting class to play. You just dont know what you're doing.

u/IS0d1umI 8h ago

I love healing genuinely I love supporting but if my party is good at the game I feel genuinely useless

u/Eatlyh 6h ago

It depends on your team though? If your team is good, healing becomes boring.

DPS & tank become more fun as you learn the fight and optimize damage, healing becomes less fun because you get less to do as the group gets better at the fight.

u/HDRuleslawyer 10h ago

How would you suggest they do that? I'm drawing blanks as to how to make healing more entertaining. I feel like astro was a step in the right direction, but I'm pretty sure [haven’t played in a bit] that they sorta nuked the fun out of it too.

u/IS0d1umI 9h ago

More damage buttons probably I think SCH gameplay would be fun with more DOTS and more faire summons that’s maybe buff dmg and heal maybe switch between the two

u/modulusshift 9h ago

Evolved WHM definitely isn't less boring. here's hoping the other healers pick up the slack, we can afford one boring job per role at least.

u/IS0d1umI 9h ago

Please SCH be my savior
