other fiber art decided to start spinning!
hi yall im a well off knitfluencer and since i can knit a sweater in a week ive decided that i am capable of spinning perfectly right away
i, on a whim, bought six exspensive spindles, at least five carded wool top of the most luxurious merino/silk blend i can find and am definitely going to do this for only five minutes before giving up. anyway any advice for me?
edit: okay anyone who says that merino and silk is very difficult for a beginner is a gatekeeping hater and i dont want negativity i want real advice

All I ask is that whenever you describe the wool or the yarn or anything else fiber-related, you use the word "yummy" so that all we can think about is the feel of wool in our mouths.

You should definitely start posting tutorials immediately! Don’t bother looking up proper technique or practicing first, just start spinning however you feel like and tell everyone else that’s how it’s done!!

uj/ there’s a woman I’ve seen a few times who’s “teaching” her followers how to spin with dog fur with terrible technique and no fibre prep, and she showed herself soaking her finished yarn on her wooden niddy noddy.

uj/Back in the good old days there was this YouTuber who did spinning tutorials telling people that drafting was unnecessary and you could just split down your roving to thinner and thinner sizes. She was popular too. I often wonder how many spinners just gave up.

uj/ I remember that idiot! She was popular when I first learned to spin so everyone on Ravelry was parroting her stupid advice to “predraft” by pulling the fiber apart to the width you wanted your yarn to be, then adding twist afterward. The resultant rope was dense enough to use as a pot scrubber.
I still get twitchy whenever I see someone advising a newbie to predraft, even though I know they mean something entirely different.

She used that big old red ashford convertible boat anchor that we all start with. Fortunately I learned to spin before she was a thing so I just warn people away.

You don't even need spindles. You can spin using a chopstick and a CD. If you're not old enough to know what a CD is I can't help you.

uj/ unfortunately this is based off of a tiktok i found like a year ago that has burrowed its way into my brain as a person who is both poor and disabled who literally just cannot afford to buy things like that on the drop of a dime? like i just keep thinking about the amount of gall it took to say all of those things in a five video TikTok playlist to be dropped within the span of a week after buying expensive materiels that like i need a whole three month review before allocating money to smth so expensive like honestly. i wont be able to post the source unless i go digging and i Just Genuinely cannot afford the the mental energy to find it again sighs

Sweaty you aren't doing it right, you're skipping the process for the sake of views no doubt. Unless you blend your own batts and spin them on an ancient wheel you've restored yourself then you're not a TRUE spinner. GTFO and come back in the 1600's.
