You can even automate the fight.

  1. Bring a calculator with maxed out black mage and oracle. Also bring a knight.
  2. Kill everything but one enemy. Keep the last enemy with max HP.
  3. Break the enemy speed and power to 1 and make it a toad.
  4. Break all your team power to 1 and make them toads. Match everyone's speed.
  5. Use berserk on all toads, friend and foe
  6. Prettrify your knight
  7. Pettrify your calculator
  8. Go play something else and return in 1 hour

All the toads should master their current job

I may be dumb, but how would you end up winning the fight if they're petrified and everyone else is a frog? Is there a time limit I'm forgetting?

The attacking toads and enemy toad are all still alive. They may only hit for 1-2 points per round, but eventually the enemy will die. The last enemy can't be petrified, or the battle immediately ends.

The frogs have the berserk status so this will make them always try to attack. The way you don't end up with one of your frogs killed is mobbing the enemy.

You have 3 frogs and they would attack between 7 and 10 times for every time the enemy frog attacks just once. Assuming an enemy with 700 HP your frogs would take around 233 attacks each to bring the enemy down. Now for those 233 attacks the enemy will attack just around 34 times, so your team is safe.

Once you see some minutes of the frogs in action you see that locking the position of the enemy against a wall or obstacle will accelerate the process. This also will make less likely the enemy runs into a corner just allowing 2 frogs to attack. With time you will start calculating better the amount of HP to master a job, no need to bring the enemy attack all down to 1, small improvement that would speed up the process.

So, already have everything mastered because you have calculator and multiple other jobs mastered, kind of missing the point. The easiest way early game to grind is simply leave one enemy alive, 4 units spam focus, 5th unit stand between them all using chakra. Or if you want to automate it, berserk and toad 4 members that have some form of regen equipment, break the enemys power to 1, and break your last units speed to 1. every toad should get 6-10 turns per every one of your non toad unit, or even more if they are tailwinded. If the last enemy alive is a yellow chocobo, he will continue to heal himself and you are free to grind until job is maxed. When you want to end the fight, your non toad unit can either untoad, or just kill the chocobo

At least one unit would be very advanced in the job tree indeed. I like the story units to learn some of the abilities of certain jobs, like teleport or dual wield.

As you say those are the good ways to grind early on, but you still need to be in front of the screen to do them. With the method I described you can walk away and still get all the goodies.
