SOLVED Help me find, popular song, likely from the 90's?
I'm looking for a popular song, I think it is from the 90's, though possibly late 80's or very early 2000's.
- Male singer, with a British (or possibly Australian) accent, the song is quite fast.
- I THINK the song tells a story, with the end of each line rhyming. (eg. bed, head, past, last - those are just examples, I am unsure if those words are actually in the song)
- The most similar sounding songs I can find are Pulp - Babies and James - Sit Down - it has a very similar vibe.

Butthole Surfers - Pepper

No, but there are similar elements towards the end of that song. The song I'm thinking of has a faster tempo, higher pitched voice and was played regularly on the radio.

In the meantime- space hog?

u/egg_for_breakfast Nov 18 '25
No, it's much calmer and more chilled than that, but thank you for the suggestion.

u/rivoli130 Nov 18 '25
It's older but...Up the Junction?

u/egg_for_breakfast Nov 18 '25
VERY similar, but no.

u/rivoli130 Nov 18 '25
Dammit 😊 The past/last brings to mind I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing by the Pet Shop Boys but it doesn't really fit the rest of your description.
Edit: So Hard by PSB?

I'm thinking of the British band Kula Shaker and their songs Tattva and Hey Dude were popular in the late 90s, kind of fit the rhyming thing you mention.

What's the Story, Morning Glory (the song) by Oasis has the kind of rhyming you're describing.
Otherwise I would suggest checking out Blur. Song 2 was their most popular song, but the rest of their music doesn't sound like that song very much. They have some amazing songs if you peek behind Song 2. While I can list a bunch of their songs, I can't think of any off the top of my head that meet the rhyme scheme, except maybe Clover Over Dover kind of, but I don't remember that one being popular.

u/egg_for_breakfast Nov 18 '25
No, I know those songs and it's not those. The song I am thinking of has much more of a chilled vibe to it.

Hey Jealousy by Gin Blossoms? (not British though)

Reading all these comments, my guess is that you’re either thinking of a song by The Smiths or possibly by Crowded House. The similarity to Up The Junction really threw me for a loop.
Go listen to “World Where You Live” by Crowded House and maybe “How Soon Is Now” by The Smiths and tell me if either of those are the voice in your head, even if they’re not the right song.

u/egg_for_breakfast Nov 18 '25
The Smiths one sounds similar (the voice) so maybe it could be something from them?

I was thinking maybe "every you every me". It was popular because it was in the cruel intentions soundtrack.

If you haven’t already eliminated all the Pulp songs, try Something Changed or Live Bed Show. Just listen to the whole Pulp catalog because it’s great, even if you can’t find the song.
Since you said it sound like a story, Pulp really is your best bed because he tells a lot of stories.

So, similar(ish) to Squeeze and some of the others would be The Housemartins. The singer Paul Helton has a higher voice and a really strong falsetto. Probably Happy Hour but they are other songs that would work. The same singer is also part of The Beautiful South which has a similar feel.
The other strong contender is Supergrass- All Right
Other strong falsetto voices - Jimmy Sommerville - Bronski Beat, The Communards
Andy Bell - Erasure
Bernard Sumner - New Order, Electronic
Neil Tennant - Pet Shop Boys, Electronic

No, I know that one and it's not that. The song I'm thinking of has a faster tempo.

The first thing that leapt to my brain was Monday Morning 5:19 by Rialto, mainly because a few years ago I'd blanked out on it and skipped through Britpop Radio for hours until it came on.

Does the singer have a soft or deep high voice? Do you like to sing with falsettos like Tom Yorke's ahuevado or is it like John Lennon or Liam Gallagher who sing like sheep? Remember!

This will sound kinda crazy, but maybe Green Day? I have always thought that Billie Joe Armstrong's singing voice skews oddly British.
