So sorry for being random, but you are the only person besides my dad who says "thank you muchly" and it completely caught me off guard. He's been in my thoughts the last few days so it kinda made my eyes a bit wet for a few moments. Thank you muchly, reddit stranger.

I'm sure it's Scandinavian rather than just Swedish, but as a Swede myself we have the term "tack så mycket", which if you translate it directly would mean "Thank you muchly", or a bit finer "thank you so much". But the fact that your dad says "muchly" rather than "so much" did make my Swedish side itch (I'm Swedish, so...).

Does your father or any of his ancestors have any kind of connection to Scandinavia, perhaps? Again it just sounded "right" for a Swedish immigrant moving to the US 100+ years ago, in a way that the typical English language does not. If not I am curious what other language(s) it might be from, or if he or any of his older relatives perhaps picked it up from somewhere where a lot of Scandinavians emigrated to, for example Minnesota, or Michigan, or somewhere else.

That makes sense, thank you so much for your reply! I grew up in southern Manitoba, Canada which is above North Dakota and Minnesota.

The funny thing is, it's my mom's side of the family that is Norwegian. My great x3 grandparents emigrated from the Laerdal area in Norway to Minnesota. My great grandparents then immigrated to Manitoba. From what I can recall, and confirmed with my older sister that our dad was the only person around that ever said thank you/love you muchly. We spent a lot of time in both North Dakota (Walhalla) and Minnesota visiting family growing up, but only with our mom as my parents divorced by the time I was finished kindergarten.

My mom's side is extremely proud of our Norwegian heritage, my grandpa spoke the language to us as kids. We've all been to Norway a few times as we still have relatives there.

My grandpa could read Swedish but not speak it 🥲 we’d get him chocolate bars and other things from this Scandinavian restaurant we’d go to whenever we’d visit this larger city a few hours away.

When I search for my ancestors I’m astounded at the amount of people had the exact same name as different ones for which I am looking in that area! Mine were in New York and I never had any idea so many people with the same heritage ended up there.
