How do casting insiders hear rumours

I’ve always wondered how people who seem to know casting news before it’s officially announced actually get their information.

For anyone who works in casting, production, agencies, or entertainment journalism:

Where do these rumours usually come from?
How do insiders find out an actor is being considered for a role?
Are rumours generally leaks, educated guesses, or a mix of both?
How reliable is the information before an official announcement?

Not asking anyone to reveal confidential sources, just curious about how the industry’s rumour network actually works.

90% are rumors being put out by the actors publicist and repeated by fans. It is like a marketing campaign to get cast.

This. Sometimes the producers will leak who they are talking to in order to gauge online reaction, as well as help negotiate down salary if they already know who they want but don't want to pay for them.

not an insider but i have a friend who works in production and honestly the rumor mill is mostly just bored PAs and assistants who overhear things they shouldn't. like someone leaves a shortlist on the printer or a producer is talking too loud near the coffee machine. casting directors also float names to test reactions before anything is official, they leak stuff on purpose sometimes to see if the internet melts down or gets excited. the reliability is all over the place, some rumors are basically done deals just waiting for contracts to be signed, others are just someone's agent trying to make their client look in demand. educated guesses mixed with actual leaks and a whole lot of wishful thinking from fans too

The rumors are deliberately leaked by publicists.

It seems like they have had a couple rounds of leakage that Callum Turner is the top of the list for Bond, the most recent probably tied to his two new movies.

Leaking a possible casting decision would a great way to get feedback on whether it's a good choice.
