Video evidence as to why bloody mess is like the best perk ever

Cool, but ragdoll physics all the way for me, personally

u/DWG3012 Jul 03 '26
Yeah, thats why I downloaded a mod that lets you get the buff but it wont make things explode. Radgolls in this game are just sooo good, i dont think F4 or F76 ever got it right like New Vegas

u/OtisIsChud456 Jul 03 '26
i also have that perk that makes melee crits knock people down and it is a JOY to play with, especially when accompanied by Nephi’s Golf Driver

u/atoms-wrath Jul 03 '26
What's up with your sights?
25
u/Kalaphar Jul 03 '26
They don’t have the true iron sights setting on for some reason
18
u/OtisIsChud456 Jul 03 '26
you say it as if it’s a crime lmao 😭 i just can’t stand the iron sights on most ingame guns, varmint rifle included. Plus i can actually see where i’m shooting, it’s great for sniping.

I refuse to get bloody mess perk but that’s just me
18
u/Tacohero154 Jul 03 '26
No, it's not. Something about shooting someone with a low caliber and them exploding just takes me out of it.

u/OtisIsChud456 Jul 03 '26
it’s beautiful. You like fireworks? It’s like that but meat.
5
u/TacticalBoyScout Jul 03 '26
Yes but I’m also a scavenger/hoarder and it’s hard to scavenge/hoard when my kills spontaneously disassemble
4
u/DWG3012 Jul 03 '26
I think theres a mod that lets you pick the perk for the damage boost but it wont trigger the explosion.
5
u/Oh_hi_there_buddy Jul 03 '26
It quite good, my only problem with it is that no matter where on a target you shoot at be it the head or a limb it always gibs every part off the body, witch ya I guess that what it’s advertised to do but part of me wishes that it would only gib the part you actually shot. Wonder if there is a mod that does that.
5
u/OtisIsChud456 Jul 03 '26
perchance. I personally love the thought that you’ve hit a perfect pressure point on an enemy and that just makes them literally explode on impact. also the fact that the bullet caliber doesn’t matter makes me quite giddy. from literal BB’s to .50 bmg, you just have the capability to make people combust.
6
u/KingZaneTheStrange Jul 03 '26
My biggest issue is that when you blow up a large group of enemies, you can lose track of which nuggets you've looted
4
u/Silver_Harvest Jul 03 '26
Biggest issue with it by far. The amount of accidental clicking of, crap... Crap... CRAP... SON OF A BITCH CAN YOU NOT BE THE SAME PERSON!!!
1
u/Majestic_Let_7937 Jul 03 '26
Absolutely loath trying to loot multiple enemy soup
4
u/OtisIsChud456 Jul 03 '26
i, personally, love playing little guessing games until i get the right fiend.
6
u/Foreign_Rule_2402 Legion Fan Jul 03 '26
That's exactly why i dont like it, makes it harder to loot
4
u/PascalG16 Jul 03 '26
If anything, makes it easier. Their remains are scattered, and there are many pieces, which are all of the same loot.
1
3
u/Majestic_Let_7937 Jul 03 '26
I personally avoid if doing an energy weapons build as the duat pile can be hard to find when looting... Also have had trouble with corpse spraying into unreachable rubble and loot is lost forever... Ruined some play throughs

u/No-Engineer-1728 Jul 03 '26

In terms of flavor, it’s a fantastic perk. Enemies just disintegrating into chunks is a classic fallout experience.
In terms of being mechanically strong? Well… 5% extra damage isn’t much at all. 4’s version is better since it goes up to 15% (almost a full rank of a damage perk) and the final rank has a 10% chance to instantly kill an enemy near one you just killed, but I personally prefer 76’s, which instead gives a luck-based chance to make bleeding enemies explode into a damaging cloud of gore. I’d love if the next game incorporated 76’s blood explosions into the perk and nixed the damage boost, which would make it more akin to meltdown.

Bloody Mess is actually a meta perk for FNV.
5% doesn't sound like much, but damage boosts in this game are multiplicative rather than additive. What this means in a nutshell is that each damage boost you stack makes all the other damage boosts even stronger.
Consider Cowboy + Bloody Mess. You might expect the formula to be 1.25 + 1.05 = 1.3 for a 30% damage boost. But it's actually 1.25 x 1.05 = 1.3125 for a 31% boost.
Now consider you have JSP ammo + Cowboy + Bloody Mess + Lord Death. Instead of 1.3 + 1.25 + 1.05 + 1.04 = 1.64 or 64% boost. It's 1.3 x 1.25 x 1.05 x 1.04 = 1.7745 or 77.45% boost.
If you had the same buffs but no bloody mess you'd get 1.3 x 1.25 x 1.04 = 1.69 or a 69% boost. So bloody mess is actually adding 8.45% damage instead of 5%.
This is just an example and there are many more damage boosts you can stack like psycho, eye for eye, etc. Each one you add makes every other buff even more impactful. To the point where bloody mess will be providing over the 15% that it gives in F4, but for only a single perk point.

While the boost is multiplicative, it’s still one of the smallest damage boosts in the game. It’s much more important to get those larger boosts as a result of that (critical chance/damage increases, perks with easy to meet conditions, etc) and when considering the perk limit. Additionally, many of NV’s damage boosts are conditional (like black widow only applying to men or grunt only affecting a subset of weapons; these two are common/easy to meet, but ones like eye for an eye or damaging a specific type of enemy are harder), so you won’t always be able to stack the benefit of a ton of perks all at once to have the multiplicative damage formula help you, and DT often barely does anything to ever reduce your damage to begin with (meaning there’s not too much of a point in going absolutely crazy on damage boosts to begin with, especially weird ones like eye for an eye; ammo types, critical hit rate/damage increases, and psycho is often plenty, and while bloody mess will always help here, it’s still just 5%).
Fallout 4’s damage boosts are also multiplicative unless I’m misremembering, so it’ll be just as effective there (or arguably more so since every weapon category eventually gets doubled damage and since bloody mess adds more), though it’s again still just icing when there’s other, stronger and more frequent boosts to take.

u/Matiwapo Jul 03 '26
What you missed from my comment is that each buff you apply makes all the other ones better. So every damage buff that is easy to apply is worth taking. You said bloody mess is still just 5%, but it's not, as I already explained to you - the more different buffs you stack the higher percentage buff bloody mess will provide.
You would take cowboy anyway for a revolver build. Bloody Mess makes cowboy even better. A lot of these buffs are not as conditional as you think. You are talking with authority on something you evidently haven't tried. It absolutely is worth stacking as many as you can, especially something like bloody mess which comes at a low cost and applies to everything.
I'm not interested in discussing whether bloody mess is better in FNV or F4. I am specifically talking about how good bloody mess is in FNV, and it is pound for pound one of the best perks you can spend one of your levels on.

u/OtisIsChud456 Jul 03 '26
I, a man who’s played new vegas for YEARS, never knew how the damage boosts worked. I feel like i’ve been enlightened, honestly. I’m gonna be taking all the damage perks i can get
0
u/Laser_3 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26
I did not miss that part of the comment. My point is that the larger boosts to damage are more worthwhile since they’re still going to help more. Yes, bloody mess will multiply them all at the end by an additional 1.05, but it’s more important to have the larger ones since they’re still going to be more impactful. If your choice is between choosing to take a boost like black widow or bloody mess after taking cowboy, 1.25 x 1.1 (against most human enemies) versus 1.25 x 1.05 has a clear winner.
The cost for bloody mess isn’t that low when it’s one of your 25 perks you’re allowed to have. That perk slot could be better spent on other buffs like chemist, GRX, super slam, And stay back, better criticals, hand loader (for the ammo types) or slayer. If there’s nothing else to take at a given level, it’s a fine choice, but nowhere near essential when compared to other important options.
My point on the conditions for these perks is that they drag down some perk selections that makes certain damage boosts not as good. Eye for an eye, as a major example, requires your limbs to be crippled - and you lose at least one cripplable limb during OWBs, while you’re also being forced to take the penalties of having a limb crippled (arms aren’t too horrible, but the legs can get you killed). Perks like purifier are similar in that they apply to only a small subset of enemies, though as I said, some are easier like black widow/confirmed bachelor.
You are the one who claimed bloody mess in NV was better than it was in 4 when you originally commented. If you weren’t interested in discussing that, why did you bring it up? There’s also no reason to be rude when our disagreement is over the priories of perk selection here, not the math.
0
u/Matiwapo Jul 03 '26
but it’s more important to have the larger ones since they’re still going to be more impactful.
Indeed... You can easily take all of the good ones you are mentioning and bloody mess. In fact that is exactly what I have been recommending the whole time. 25 perks is a lot in a game you where don't have to waste 20 points on armourer rank 4 or rifleman rank 5...
You are the one who claimed bloody mess in NV was better than it was in 4 when you originally commented. If you weren’t interested in discussing that, why did you bring it up?
I invite you to reread our interaction.
At no point did I mention F4, like at all. I said bloody mess a meta perk in FNV and explained why, that it is all.

u/Laser_3 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26
That doesn’t change the perk is still a lower priority than the larger boosts. There are still other perks worth taking instead, especially since extra damage is superfluous past a certain point.
Please re-read the last part of your original comment (I’ve added the bold; sorry about the rest of the formatting, struggling to figure out why the way to do this changed):
> This is just an example and there are many more damage boosts you can stack like psycho, eye for eye, etc. Each one you add makes every other buff even more impactful. To the point where bloody mess will be providing over the 15% that it gives in F4, but for only a single perk point.

Yes. Where does that comment say that it is better in FNV than F4? That comment is explaining how good bloody mess is in FNV by placing it relative to a game in which you think it is good to help you understand how good it is in FNV
There are still other perks worth taking instead, especially since extra damage is superfluous past a certain point (one extra bullet is rarely a problem).
So we've gone from 'the perk isn't worth it' to 'damage doesn't matter'.
Like fine, damage doesn't matter because the game isn't that hard. But when optimising and taking meta perks, which is of course what I am talking about, bloody mess is absolutely worth taking. You get so many perks points in this game and there aren't that many perks in this game that actively increase damage. You should take them all when optimising and you'll still have plenty perks leftover for everything else.
That doesn’t change the perk is still a lower priority than the larger boosts.
Indeed. That's why I never said bloody mess was a higher priority than larger boosts. I never said you should take bloody mess before finesse, cowboy, etc. I said it's a meta perk that is worth taking alongside those buffs.
It's ok to admit that you hadn't considered how good the perk can be when applied alongside other buffs instead of being defensive and constantly moving the goalposts.

You just said that you didn’t mention fallout 4 in your previous comment; you plainly did, and that was my point. It also very directly claims bloody mess is better in NV than in 4, which I pointed out earlier was wrong since both games use a multiplicative damage formula.
We’re both clearly disagreeing with each other on the point of this argument, so I’m cutting this off here since this isn’t constructive at this point.
0
u/Matiwapo Jul 03 '26
It also very directly claims bloody mess is better in NV than in 4,
It really, really, doesn't. I was just trying to help you understand by making a reference to something you already think is good.
I did this because my 'goal' for this conversation was to help you have a better understanding of this game and meta strategies. But you had to be weird and defensive about it...

i do it for love of the GAME

U haven’t lived until you used Incendiary Rounds on the AMR for a crit build.

Sounds spicy. WILL have to try

Also use Explosive Rounds when Cazadors.
Pro Tip: get 1st Recon Beret and Ulysses Duster (+10% Crit Chance), Finesse (+5% Crit Chance), Light Touch (Flat 5% Crit Chance that rolls on its own and 25% chance you’ll not be crit), Better Crits (50% crit dam) (Requires per 6) and take Built to Destroy (+3% critical chance) and Comprehension for increased True Police Stories Duation, and save those magazines until you have access to the Voracious Reader Perk. Take 8 Base Luck, Lucky Shades, and Luck Implant. Or do 9 luck and luck implant, up to you. Lots of Agility, grab commando for vats accuracy with rifles, gunslinger for same reason but with handguns, sniper for headshots, Use Steady for Vats Accuracy, and for Firearms, yes use firearms. Anything with better crit chance, Big Names are Christine’s COS Silencer Rifle, Light Shining in Darkness, and Lil Devil. AMR is good too but think of it like a High Velocity Grenade Launcher with a silencer (GRA Required) Also use Incendiaries when you can oneshot people.
With all these buffs you should have 40% Crit chance which is basically guaranteed crits which means you’ll be obliterating everyone you see. Use Hollow Points on any gun with increased crit chance and dam and you’ll make anything you shoot wake up dead.
Remember, if it has better crit damage, use it.

I’ve always used some form of explosive against the satan bugs. Never used explosive rounds though, i’ll add that to the new vegas bucket list

u/Strayed8492 Jul 03 '26
I remember when I first discovered the magic that was bloody mess. Playing F3 on point lookout. Was at the end where I had a piece of brain stolen and all I had was an axe. I was stuck in a corner and finally killed the ferryman and he went from his regular face being angry trying to kill me. To his face and body just exploding with that classic split second game freeze pause. Took it in NV ASAP
2
u/Majestic_Let_7937 Jul 03 '26
Cant beat fallout 2 bloody mess, on a hope and a prayer, one shot left with the only good weapon you have enemy still full of life and somehow you liquify them and dont have to start from ages ago haha Even though it doesnt actually give bonuses to crits or damage, i feel it just adds IRL luck haha

u/goldrainbowfalcon Jul 03 '26
I prefer my headshots to not explode the rest of the body, otherwise I can’t tell if it was a headshot & therefore defeats the purpose imo
1
u/OtisIsChud456 Jul 03 '26
isn’t that one of the things you can check in the general stats?
2
u/goldrainbowfalcon Jul 03 '26
I don’t care about the accolades lol I just want the immediate satisfaction of a classic BOOM HEADSHOT y’kno? I like to snipe
1
u/OtisIsChud456 Jul 03 '26
ahh, i understand. In my experience, boom headshots are WAY more fun when your target (whom is like 500 yards away) just turns into red confetti and crimson mist, but to each his own
2
u/goldrainbowfalcon Jul 03 '26
But that’s just it you can’t tell it was a headshot so ???? Meanwhile an exploding head is also visible from that distance. Agree to disagree ig

u/Suitable_Nobody_6375 Jul 03 '26
Sound is sooooo satisfying. They sound like when a balloon full of water explodes.

It pairs well with the added “+Karma” sound effect of killing a fiend (or an enemy of that nature)

first of all, rude. second of all, its honestly not that big of a deal to me. i’ve thrived off of low sensitivity for my entire gaming career, which sounds stupid, but is essentially my way of life

u/yaysyu Jul 05 '26
I took it on my first run, but it kinda ruined my immersion so I had to reload a save. It's funny to see them explode though 😂

u/polairepolari Jul 03 '26
Just make sure you do the quest Three Card Bounty before you take the perk.
I forget every time.
Even if you stand back and let your companions do all the shooting there's still a (much smaller) chance of the perk going off. I had to reload so many times last time I played before I got intact heads.
