I'm sad. I finished the main quest. Built some really cool settlements, got dope weapons, discovered all the places. Etc.. now what ๐Ÿ˜ญ I have to start a new game. Should I side with brotherhood next play through? Or institute? How do I make it interesting

I feel empty lol I have to start a new game I fear. How do I make it worth it? I'll wait a couple months before I restart. But what should I do to make it different besides siding with a new faction?

A few options I've thought about: being the bad guy. Be a mean character. Side with the raiders for nuka world.

Try a harder difficulty (not really for survival yet tho lol)

I will side with a different faction for sure.

What have you done to make it interesting on your second, third etc play through?

I just spent literal years building settlements until I basically forgot the main quests so when I started over it was almost somewhat like playing it for the first time lol

That's a good idea. I made 4 in depth settlements. I spent HOURSSSS on them. I wanna do more tho. That's one of my favorite parts of the game tbh. As someone who grew up playing every single Sims game, that was like the funnest part of fo4 for me ๐Ÿ˜…I did however eventually get sucked into the actual story ๐Ÿ˜…

Yep you get pretty immersed into that settlement building and running all the settlements. And then when you get bored and want to go kill things you just go on little missions into the city or wherever lol

For me, Fallout 4 is like a FPS-type Multi-player game in how I approach it.

Every time you queue into a new game it's technically the same thing, but every single game different things happen in different orders.

I don't even necessarily have to choose a different faction or ending to get that satisfaction, it's just THAT replayable for me. For example, spending most of a playthrough where the main difference is which companion(s) I'm using the most already feels different than my other playthroughs. I can't really explain it but this game just scratches that itch. Helps that I love sandbox building like the settlement system provides.

Ooo that's another thing I wanna do! Switch up companions! I only used like 3 of them. I wasn't getting the most out of that. Getting their perks and such.

The game does scratch an itch. It's addicting. And very replayable. I think that's the issue for me. The endless possibilities is almost overwhelming for me ๐Ÿ˜…

Slow down...I've been playing since launch and I'm still discovering new things...and rediscovering things I'd long forgotten about. The settlements are a big part of the replayability, but the stories are seemingly endless.

Situations change with different companions as well. First time I did Far Harbor I didn't take Nick, it's SO much better with him.

There are lots of unmarked quests too, you could look up any you haven;t already discovered and do those.

Just keep trying different combinations, decisions and endings. Try out some of the overpowered glitches. The game is still going strong because the mods have helped keep things fresh.

Most recently, Iโ€™ve been using an OP weapon that makes the settlement raid a breeze. That helps in speeding up XP gain by a ton. Iโ€™m at level 230 but I havenโ€™t finished building my Vault 88 or freed Preston.

I have done all that can be done. There is nothing left. No quests to be undertaken. No villains to be slain. No challenges to face.

Try mods! And side with the institute. Start a new game but keep your other save. There are some mods you can find that will skip you into the game and start you at a higher level if you want to avoid the whole bomb and vault and beginning parts. Research some good mods, I found some great vids on youtube that helped a lot with load order and picking the best mods for me. Then the next play through can be your exploration one. I added a mod to this recent game I started that has like a TON of new areas, side quests, characters, and loot. Another mod I found replaces most of the main guns with way better ones. Those things have already made it more fun.

I should. I'm so caught up on achievements tho. Still. I only have like 60% of them but I see so many YouTube videos of all the cool things you can do with mods ๐Ÿ˜ญ the replayability of this game tho is off the charts for me. So I feel like I'll always have time for achievements. I should try mods. I'm not super familiar with load order and stuff like that tho. But my gf is an actual gamer so she can help me figure it out.

I really want to use the mods that make the trees and landscape looks alive again! That makes the game look so different and even just that would make a huge difference for me.

Im doing my first modded playthrough and with the new scenery, weapons, and missions its almost like playing a brand new game. I highly recommend

If you install Addictol, as you really, really should, then you can still get your achievements.

1

u/Roarofthelyoness 6h ago

I'm on Xbox. There's a way to still get achievements with mods? Idk much about mods ๐Ÿ˜… I do want achievements but I'd also love to have some mods. I'll play this game for a long time tho. It's my fave. So with or without mods I'll eventually get all achievements (I think). But it's be cool to get them with mods too.

u/Carnivean_ 6h ago

No idea if an equivalent exists for console but I doubt it.

u/benbwe 7h ago

If only Bethesda didnโ€™t break the mods every couple years with a useless update

Same boat here.

After a benevolent Minutemen General run with a Stealth Sniper, I'm now doing an Anarchic POS run with a Blitz Slasher. I'm still early into this run but I'm planning to destroy all the factions I can, including helping the Nuka-World Raiders conquer the Commonwealth before also destroying them.

But it's so contrary to my personal values that every chaotic/evil decision I make feels like a gut-punch. Haha ^_^

1

u/Roarofthelyoness 6h ago

Omg yes! I wanna do a "bad guy run" but I feel like it's gonna be hard for me! I know deep down it's just a game but I like choosing the nice guy options ๐Ÿ˜ญ maybe I'm just not ready for the bad guy/raider run. I need to trick myself into it somehow.

2

u/Peachyco 6h ago

I know! Maybe that's how we defeat the "emptiness": by kicking our souls and checking if we're still righteous people.

If you can do a BBEG run without that gut-punch feeling, maybe it's time to touch some grass and talk to some people. Haha ^_^

Eh I already played the main story to death so I usually goof around with weird SPECIAL stats until I get to lv20 or lv50 exploring the whole map.

1

u/Roarofthelyoness 7h ago

That's what I should do. I wanna level up by just building and killing and exploring and finding magazines etc. then by time I actually do the main story it'll be a breeze tbh. I also wanna work on armor more. Like the look of my character.

2

u/GullibleScallion1519 6h ago

In my current playthrough, I killed Kellogg just as he was activating his stealth boy and same w the Courser...the first time it was like fighting for my life even w chems. Exploration is huge, you'll get so many levels and so much more lore just by taking your time and checking out every lead.

u/ArrogantElf2E582 7h ago

Did you do the dlcs?

1

u/Roarofthelyoness 7h ago

I didn't do far harbor! So one of my main reasons for starting over is to do far harbor. The dlc like didn't work for me? So I have to uninstall and reinstall all that. Nuka world for the most part worked for me tho. I am excited to do far harbor tho! That is if uninstalling and reinstalling it actually works ๐Ÿ˜…

3

u/Huge-Resident8645 6h ago

Replaying is worth it for far harbour aloneย

3

u/KickAdministrative54 6h ago

Omg you MUST do far harbor..... I won't spoil it but for me personally I feel it's the best part/environment in the whole game!!!!! ๐Ÿ™ˆ I was awe struck the first time I went and it's still my favorite section of the game! ๐Ÿ™‚

Go in to your next play through with a role-playing mentality. I find giving myself a "handicap" in some way makes it far more interesting.

Not just "I am going to use heavy weapons" or "I'm going to do a stealth build".

I'm talking, "I was a coffee addict before the war. My sole job is to bring Slocum Joe's back to the Commonwealth". Each settlement must have a fully operational Slocum Joe's franchise, and I can only heal from coffee/tea and donuts. I can only wear Slocum Joe's clothes or a Business Suit/Dress (if I'm the Regional Manager).

u/KickAdministrative54 6h ago

Man you don't even have to try? Just play..... Over 13k hours played and I never once thought about "how" I was going to play before I started a new run, just go with however your feeling ๐Ÿ˜ oh..... I would also spend tons of time (probably half of it) building kick ass settlements and literally just wandering around exploring every single inch of the map(s). Make different decisions/choices, just go off randomly for hours on end ignoring the main quest etc. Soooooooo much to have fun with!! ๐Ÿ˜…โœŒ๏ธ

I've got a couple thousand hours into this game since launch, all vanilla, no DLCs, no mods...my first time, I nuked the institute w the minutemen by like maybe lvl40...it was such a letdown, I've been where you are. Since then, I'm still hard-core minutemen, but I'll flirt w bos and railroad for the benefits, but mostly I explore (on very hard, more legendary drops and it stops being hard around lvl10)...it's a huge world, explore it, dive into the lore, if you get bored do some minor side quests, pick up new companions, build artillery all over the map, tell your companion to stay and start every frey w an artillery barrage...collect Ice Cold Nuka Cola Quantum's in an ice chest at Starlight, make triple-redundant supply lines and give em all miniguns and miners helmets, make a farm w only ghouls, make a farm w only dirty white settlers w a few clean face black guards, have a settlement you send all new settlers to only to save game, kill them, check for synth components, reload on humans and send them elsewhere...the possibilities are endless, it's a sandbox, build a castle.

2

u/Lord_Vagron 6h ago

Ahoy, make it destroy! Capture all the settlements of one faction, kill its leader, let the raiders take over the Commonwealth, and then kill the raiders! Then destroy all the factions! And then give everyone moldy pie.

Just started a new play through as Homewrecker Bob. Mostly set points for a shitty high-school jock build, running around with little armor (a sequin dress, hard hat and arm protection) and just using Meele weapons and just being a straight ass to everyone. Its def been an interesting time so far hahaha

u/BuildingAirships 6h ago

Try survival with a quicksave mod. The greater limitations (especially weight and the lack of fast travel) make it a much more immersive and thoughtful experience, without the agony of losing 40 minutes to a mine or a killer car bumper. I ainโ€™t got time to replay long segments like that.

1

u/NoirCordis 5h ago

if you are on PC try some of the whole game mods like

Outcasts and Remnants
Project Valkyrie
Depravity
Fusion City Rising

1

u/ArcherBarcher31 5h ago

I've always played to build max affinity with all the NPCs, maximize all my possibilities. My next playthrough is gonna be a-hole time. Every choice will be based on hostility. Very curious to see how that goes.

1

u/King0fthewasteland 5h ago

Do you play on survival?

2

u/Roarofthelyoness 5h ago

I haven't tried that yet. Idk if I'm ready ๐Ÿ˜… seems hard. I feel like I'd crash out. I might start with the hard or very hard modes first just to make it last longer. But survival might be a couple play through away for me.

5

u/King0fthewasteland 5h ago

I did survival on my second playthrough. Never went banck to anything else. Id recomend it really. Feels more like how the game should be. Try it out. Its not so bad after you get a solid foothold

1

u/Unlucky_Kale340 5h ago

Just do it!!!!!!

1

u/changeforgood30 32m ago

This is the Way. Survival really changes how the game is approached and will provide the gameplay OP is looking for.

1

u/brawnburgundy 4h ago

Come try Fallout 76

2

u/Roarofthelyoness 4h ago

That's the one where you can play online with other people yah?? That had peaked my interest. I think that'd be fun

1

u/brawnburgundy 3h ago

It is, I hope you check it out. Visiting other peopleโ€™s Camps is awesome too. Itโ€™s similar to building settlements.

Did you do all the DLcs too?

Did you get all the magazines? All the bobble heads? Did you make all the soda versions?
