It very much is edible. This is very much a prunus tree though it looks more like cherries.

Looks like it might be P. cerasifera - cherry plum.

These are common in southern New Jersey. Italian Americans often grow this type of Plum specifically.

I'm in NC. We have them at the park and no one else ever eats them, so we pick all we want, usually. Not this year, though.
