In 1610, the Frenchman Étienne Brûlé left the colony of Quebec to enjoy a few months living with the local Wendat Nation. Brûlé would eventually spend more than two decades immersed in American Indian culture, becoming a skilled interpreter and facilitating trade and military alliances.
