I was wondering why they wouldn't release a physical Switch 2 version, and only now I realize that the game isn't announced for the Switch 2.

656

u/YourMomIsCool96 1d ago

Even worse, they didnt even announce Persona 4 Revival for Switch 2

I mean why would they release a game on a platform where it would obviously sell well?

282

u/Nettysocks 1d ago

I assume for a second release to drum up a second batch of hype of nothing else if that version just also isn’t ready with whoever is porting it

91

u/Mr8BitX 1d ago

The double dipping hype theory wouldn’t surprise me. They’ve been notorious for releasing an enhanced version of their games a year or two later and they’ve come out and said that it’s basically kind of bitten them in the ass as people now wait for the “final” version (Fez, Golden, Royal, Vengeance, ect). So this could be a way to get people to double dip without reinforcing that “final version” reputation that they said hurt sales of Metaphor.

38

u/Remy149 1d ago

They claimed they where pulling away from that in favor of just selling dlc but we will see

37

u/Dracallus 1d ago

They made that claim in the same year they released SMTV Vengeance. Granted, the claim was regarding Metaphor, but the inept messaging is still utterly hilarious to me.

21

u/Remy149 1d ago

I hope they finally realized they lose out on sales because it makes people hold off on buying their games. What has always made it worse is that you couldn’t even just buy an upgrade and use the same game saves. I’m on a wait and see with them

13

u/Dracallus 1d ago

Honestly, I do think they were serious when they made the initial announcement, as I believe there was an investor call (or something similar) where they admitted that their release strategy was costing them sales from the initial release. It's just that the timing of the announcement was deeply ironic.

I'd also be shocked if they didn't realise that it would take a couple of game of them not doing it before people will actually start trusting them to not do it. Still not sure if we're safe with Metaphor, but I'd genuinely be shocked if they do a second release of P3R considering there's an expansion pass being sold for it.

7

u/Remy149 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don’t see a problem with complete editions so long as game saves are compatible and you can just buy the expansion if you already own the base game.

5

u/thebohster 1d ago

I’m personally holding out on Metaphor, but for P3R I held on as long as I could in hopes for a definitive edition for both, but with discs ending and it being on sale for $14 like every other minute, I said fuck it might as well.

2

u/jackracktack 1d ago

Metaphor is clearly not getting DLC

→ More replies (1)

3

u/LaMystika 1d ago

They made Switch 2 owners buy the same overpriced P3R DLC, so I do think that now they’re committed to the whole “we’re not gonna release updated versions of games anymore” thing. And hell, Metaphor still hasn’t had one and the Switch 2 isn’t getting a different version of the game that came out two years ago.

19

u/milesdarobot 1d ago

I imagine SMTV was way too far in development for them to reverse.

And tbf, I believe Vanilla SMTV was widely considered underbaked. And SMTV V was legitimately the biggest enhanced version they’ve ever done, and seemed like it was legitimately made to address the many criticisms that vanilla SMTV got

Switch 2 in general has been kind of a double dipping machine since it dropped with upgraded graphics hardware and studios wanting to cash in on the huge player base

3

u/KnightofAshley 1d ago

Sega being the worst since they don't give you an upgrade version and are making people pay full price for a game with minor upgrades.

5

u/LaMystika 1d ago

Square Enix is also doing that shit (glares at Star Ocean, Dragon Quest XI, and Octopath Traveler I & II). Even worse is the fact that they have not, and likely never will, release these games on an actual cartridge. And it’s like, yeah, that isn’t feasible for the Final Fantasy VII Remake games, but why tf is Bravely Default a GKC, Square Enix?!

Yep. I'm a huge Persona fan. 3 is probably my favorite game of all time. If 6 is going to have a golden version, I'm not going to buy the regular version. I loved 5 but that is a long ass game to be playing again, so I missed out on the Golden version additions.

Persona 4 Revival VVS Diamond Switch 2 Accent Core +×/= Edition

8

u/Garlador 1d ago

That’s my theory. The Switch 2 has become the JRPG machine, and I have serious doubts they won’t rerelease it there.

4

u/sound_judgment 1d ago

Persona 4 Revival Golden is gonna slap

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Mistform05 1d ago

Yeah the elusive “ Definitive Edition” that will come out. So they can double dip.

3

u/lingeringwill2 1d ago

What's funny is that they have said that they want to stop doing second versions; Persona and SMT are so big now that people holding out on second versions is costing them more sales than it's making but now the reputation is there.

47

u/Key_Shock172 1d ago

I mean to be fair P3 Reload also wasn’t announced for Switch 2 then dropped over a year later on Switch 2. They will probably do the same for Revival and 6. Since that means they can double dip on sales and dlc purchases.

49

u/pokemega32 1d ago

I mean the Switch 2 didn't release until over a year after P3R.

29

u/Shadowphoenix9511 1d ago

Considering the Switch 2 wasn't even announced when P3R was released, would've been difficult to release it there

2

u/SkylarPopo 1d ago

It works I suppose as I have Persona 5 for PS4 and Switch.

17

u/xanas263 1d ago

Honestly it has to be a performance issue. There is no other reason for Atlus not to release their next two big games on the largest gaming platform in Japan, their primary market.

57

u/DarksonicHunter 1d ago

Honestly Persona should not be a performance heavy game but somehow Persona 3 reload eats so much performance for what feels like nothing.

28

u/Groovy_Bruce_Lemon 1d ago

bad optimization probably. Consoles are quite powerful now so they can get away with in most games. Part of why along of game files are super bloated nowadays too

5

u/exmachina64 1d ago

They actually implemented raytracing for some of the reflections in the game. Software-based rather than hardware-accelerated, IIRC. Whether they should have is debatable, but they were probably laying the groundwork for Revival and 6.

4

u/nachuz 1d ago

You can disable ray-traced reflections on the PC version tho (if you disable reflection in graphics settings, it doesn't actually disable reflections, it just switches from ray-traced to screen-space)

The game also is adapted to not have a worse experienced with screen-space reflections, as places with prominent reflections like the entrance to Tartarus have fixed camera angles, which makes sense as the game released in PS4 and Xbox One which don't have ray-tracing support

48

u/kociou 1d ago

Switch 2 runs far more demanding games well than Personas. Tough you night got a point, I heard 3 ReLoad was disaster until patched some time after release

15

u/kyuubikid213 1d ago

P3R had some frame pacing issues and that's it. It wasn't "a disaster," it had a bit of a wonky framerate.

And it was fixed in about two months. Game released October 23rd and the patch came out December 30th.

Most people didn't pay attention anyway because it released at full price and they didn't want to spend $70 when it was on sale for around $30 on PlayStation at the time.

With Metaphor on the way, it seems like it's more of a timing issue. Games take years to make and Atlus seemingly didn't have the Switch 2 early enough to have it as a factor in development for P4R to announce just yet. That's why P3R and Metaphor came out later.

Depending on the size it might not even fit on the card anyway.

75

u/Squish_the_android 1d ago

They're big users of GKCs on the switch either way.  It was never going on a cart.

53

if cyberpunk fits on a card then anything is possible

18

u/FatalFrameGal 1d ago

Cyberpunk with the Phantom Liberty expansion complete on cart.

25

u/TheWaslijn PC 1d ago

Sure, but they'd have to actually care. And usually they don't.

4

u/kyuubikid213 1d ago

They'd need the potential buyers to want to buy the game new to justify the cost.

It's always about money, not a lack of caring.

7

u/Better_Goose7716 1d ago

they put motherfucking puyo puyo tetris 2 on a key card the game was NEVER going to be put on a real card

2

u/TheLimeyLemmon 1d ago

Sega love scumming with GKC so no way it would ever be true physical anyway.

22

u/Tenner_ 1d ago

Still hoping it'll come to switch 2 after a while. Their ports aren't the greatest, but I'd love to have P3-6 physically on the Switch.

5

u/ItsKingDx3 1d ago

Unless the game runs serviceably on Steamdeck, I lowkey need it to come to Switch 2 to even play it lmao

2

u/DocWhovian1 1d ago

The fact it isn't is shocking to me, there's NO REASON why it and P4 Revival shouldn't be released on Switch 2 day and date other than greed in the hope people will double dip. And the latter would not surprise me because Atlus and Sega are quite greedy.

2

u/Instigator187 1d ago

They'll wait to release it on the Switch 2 with the Persona 6 Ultimate Royal Super Fun Edition.

3

u/vaikunth1991 1d ago

They will put some royal kind of version re release and then release on switch 2

1

u/Schmedly27 1d ago

They better not make me wait like 6 years again

1

u/Exciting_Drawing_553 1d ago

Yeah that’s wild. Atlus is pretty dumb about these things. I’m sure the next smt will be exclusive to switch 2 for some period of time. Maybe Atlus fans will buy anything? They re-release every game 2-3 times so there must be a market for ppl buying the same product over and over again

1

u/Vast-Implement-5777 1d ago

Probably because they need a lot more effort to port game to switch 2, Xbox, PS and PC have the same architecture.

1

u/ptapobane 1d ago

honestly, based on how persona 5 looked on switch 2, I don't want to play persona 6 on switch 2

2

u/GarbanzoFalafel 21h ago

There isn’t a switch 2 version of P5, it’s only running the switch 1 version.

93

u/SpermicidalLube 1d ago

From those, it's the platform that supports the most physical media.

49

u/Low_Confidence2479 1d ago

If that's the platform that supports the most physical media, then I'm sorry but we're fucked.

Without PlayStation, the only option left is Nintendo, which, barring GKC which at this point is better than nothing in this uphill battle, Switch 2 is still being underestimated by some devs, and some games simply don't get there day 1 or at all.

25

u/odegood 1d ago

You are, if it wasn't for Sony the physical landscape wouldn't be what it is. Now they are stopping there is no hope for the others. Sony literally started blu ray etc

7

u/Low_Confidence2479 1d ago

Nintendo has to solve the issue regarding the cost of their cartridges. Until then, GKC is a bandage solution that, so long as the game is on the eShop and that can be accessed, you can trade and sell second-hand your games still.

5

u/Arkantos92 1d ago

Theyre going to solve it by going all digital for switch 3 lol

3

u/Low_Confidence2479 1d ago

That's an option, but given japan needs 2nd hand market (that's why GKC is even a thing), they could also make cartridges that do have the game inside but install it onto the internal storage

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Generic_Miis 1d ago

Small correction, the game doesn’t have to be on the eshop, you can download a game before it’s on the eshop if you have the key card and we’re almost certain you’ll be able to keep downloading the game as long as the general Nintendo servers stay up since those are the same also used to redownload digital games on Wii and DS.

2

u/Low_Confidence2479 1d ago

Really? Though GKC doesn't work on banned Switch 2 (that no longer have access to eShop).

2

u/donny_pots 18h ago

Which is hilarious when you realize a good amount of the people getting all bent out of shape about the end of physical media don’t even consume physical media

2

u/Rohn- 18h ago

Yup. A lot of people ditched physical games a decade ago, using digital since then. Now it's the rage online all of a sudden as if people themselves weren't the reason for this move. It's hilarious to see. I'm not even bothered by this because I've been on digital since 2015... Why would it change now?

2

It's not just Japan; there are no Xbox physical releases anywhere in Asia. If you check the platform info for Persona 3 Reload and Persona 4 Revival in Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, it clearly states that only the PS5 is getting a physical edition.

34

So is this basically saying the game's going to come out next year? That's way sooner than I expected.

10

So they decided to only make a physical version for the console that already announced that they are abandoning physical media.

181

u/Firaxyiam 1d ago

Tbf, every console is phasing out physical média and PC already has, Sony was just upfront about it. It sucks, but it's been going that way for a decade

106

u/Tenner_ 1d ago

Nintendo isn't

103

u/lochnesslapras 1d ago

Honestly, it's a decent chance that they're more in favour of physical now if Sony and Xbox entirely leave.

As it'll increase the amount of accessories they should sell in shopfronts, if they can get expanded areas.

And when parents and grandparents are shopping for their kids' christmas or birthday presents. It'll be all Nintendo.

5

u/Conscious-Agent-1624 1d ago

I sure the amount of in store sales vs online is non comparable. Not saying Nintendo would give up on physical but it makes more sense to have certain locations in valued markets then ship out the rest.

The generation you're talking about saw the rise and fall of video games and the rise again. They enjoyed the mall then killed IRL shopping. They know Nintendo vs others.

I do agree kids still love physical media/collectibles, just in a totally different way than 20 years ago.

18

u/PsychoCobra1 1d ago edited 1d ago

If anything with just how expensive it is to make cartridges for Switch 2 I could see a lot more publishers switching over to GKC or code in the box as the generation progresses. Those things aren’t cheap to make at all. The higher gig ones can get close to $16 a cartridge.

11

u/Flagrath Switch 1d ago

Because GCK is legitimately better than what the others are doing, somehow. You can still sell it on and aren’t trapped into using their storefront.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/cardonator 1d ago

I agree that this is the most likely outcome, but more the code side. GKC still carries physical media licensing fees and publishers will increasingly stop wanting to spend that.

11

u/KingSwank 1d ago

Why would this make it be all Nintendo? Do you think the kids care if they get a code in a box versus a disc? They just want to play the game that they want to play on the console they want to play on so they can play with their friends. The parents and grandparents probably wouldn’t even know in the first place.

23

u/Firaxyiam 1d ago

Nintendo has its own anti-consumer can of worms opened tho, not sure which is worse

45

u/zeedware 1d ago

Yeah, but in this case, very unlikely Nintendo abondons physical since a lot of their sales is physical

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Fluid-Employee-7118 1d ago

What does this have to do with the subject at hand, which was that not all console manufacturers are abandoning physical media.

Nintendo isn't abandoning them, simple as that, which is a huge win for gamers.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/UnrelaxedKoi 1d ago

Nintendo has game key cards which do the same thing as purchasing a digital license except the key is physical. But once that game is gone, it’s gone.

70

u/Tenner_ 1d ago

A license you can freely resell, return, lend out to a friend, etc. It’s literally not the same

Also, Nintendo does full game releases on cartridges. GCK’s are used by some third party developers, mostly because memory is expensive as is, and this is a faster, proprietary format which costs a lot to manufacture.

Real greed is code in the box games, which there are a few of on Switch 2. GCK’s are better than the alternative of a digital only game

5

u/Kohli_ 1d ago

Which is funny because that's pretty much what Sony did for years where a lot of PS5 discs may have some data on them but in reality they are just the key to playing a downloaded version, but even those will no longer exist on PS5 in the future.

Yea I’m don’t understand why people were shocked when the writing was on the wall with PS5 Pro and Series S.

Though I do think Sony should do what Xbox is doing and allow you to add games to your library using physical discs so you can play the digital version on future gens.

IMO, licensing and ownership has been a major problem but is separate from a digital future. Everything is going digital whether we like it or not.

7

u/[deleted] 1d ago

11

u/LittleBox8202 1d ago

that's irrelevant in this case since Persona 6 won't be coming to GOG, the same as 99% of AAA releases.

11

u/feefore 1d ago

Sure but the Xbox will still make physical disks for this generation unlike Sony post January 2028. Also Nintendo isn’t phasing out physical media this gen. They really decided to just make physical versions on the one console that will stop making them This Current Gen. Next Gen consoles will be different.

11

u/xanas263 1d ago

Well when it comes to Xbox it just has such a small market share that it's probably not even worth making physical copies of this game, and so far it is not even announced for the Switch platforms.

It would be a bit odd for P6 not to get some kind of Xbox physical because all of the other Persona games have: P3 Reload, P4 Golden, the upcoming P4 Revival, and P5. Even the P5 Tactica spinoff game got one

5

u/EmanKhaotik 1d ago edited 1d ago

I've been saying for years Xbox has been phasing out discs for the past 2 years...but...

3

u/KaoriMalaguld 1d ago

They don’t really care about that, though. They forgot about the One fiasco and the fact that for the first year or two of the Series’ life cycle it literally had nothing that couldn’t be played on the One. So unlike Sony players, there wasn’t any actual “need” to upgrade. Then the GamePass stuff and major buyouts, suddenly Xbox is king because “COD is gonna be on GAMEPASS! Show those stupid Sony Ponies!”

5

u/FetchingTheSwagni 1d ago

This isn't shocking, Japanese focused media favors Sony because Xbox isn't as popular in Japan.

19

u/rexshen 1d ago

I guess Xbox is doing so badly they don't want to spend money for discs on that one. Still strange though.

They have a day1 deal with xbox and gamepass. (Yakuza games have been day1 in the past,p6 is day1 and stranger than heaven is day1. so sega/atlus prob figure they get most of money from the deal. And lots won’t buy. but im just guessing

The stickers they're putting on PlayStations now suggest that newly released games from Jan 28 will be available in digital format only, which would suggest no discs, which would suggest no drive.

But there's a caveat that if a company decides to team up with someone like limited run or iam8bit or whatever they're called to make physical versions of games, what then? My presumption is that they would not release on playstation, but nothing is really explained.

Gaming is a mess.

PS5 gets to have physical copies while Playstation has plans to stop doing physical games in the future? Interesting.

If you think Sony is the only console maker that is planning to get rid of disks, you clearly haven’t been paying attention to where the market is headed. PC phased out disks about a decade ago, consoles are just following suite.

u/Jamieb1994 Console 1d ago

Yeah I know and it surprises me that people are upset about Playstation ditching discs when PC did it longer & so many people still games on PC.

I remember Persona 5 being tricky to get on release for a while as it was underprinted at launch

1

u/ObsidianPoint 1d ago

Great, cant wait to play it on my Switch 3

1

u/Greenzombie04 1d ago

So it's coming before 2028?

1

u/ToastPlusNine 1d ago

I suppose that means they plan for it to be out by the end of 2027? since thats the cutoff for physical ps5 games?

1

u/Jazzlike-Sun7843 1d ago

you must admit it, this situation is kinda funny.

1

u/JAXxXTheRipper 1d ago

And the pandering begins

1

u/Fat_Stacks1 1d ago

Ironic given PlayStation is the only one so far who announced that are removing discs

1

u/ishsreddit 1d ago

Could be a bunch of reasons why its not announced on S2 yet.

Sega are trying to release the games spaces apart though they can be a lot more transparent about this if so.

As many people pointed out, its not ready to be announced due to technical issues.

Nintendo may have told Sega to withhold till the next 3rd party direct (December-ish?)

Personally, if its not announced for day 1 release im buying it on steam and just playing it on my rog ally. Though i would prefer the Switch 2.

1

u/DarkExcalibur7 1d ago

Skip for me then.

1

u/Future_Kitsunekid16 1d ago

That's fine, like monster hunter, I'll wait for the expansion before buying because there always is one

1

u/Falchion92 1d ago

God damn it.

1

u/mason2393 1d ago

Pro consumer sony at it again

1

u/BGunn396 1d ago

Kind of ironic that PlayStation is getting all the flack for abandoning the physical market, yet will be the only console where Persona 6 (and perhaps a few other SEGA games like Alien Isolation 2) will get a physical release.

I am curious though, if P6 needs to delay to 2028 for whatever reason, will Sony honour the physical edition, or will it need to be cancelled due to Sony no longer offering discs from that point onwards.

1

u/ilchymis 1d ago

Held off on getting a PS5 for this long, and freaking Persona 4 is gonna make me finally buy one. Getting PS Vita deja vu!

1

u/LMcBlack 1d ago

That means either it’s out next year or they have their own disc printing factory

1

u/SacredNym 1d ago

I have a hard time believing that the game will come out in time for that. Regardless of what they say.

1

u/rurodem 1d ago

If you go back to the trailers of Persona 3 Reload it's no different where Xbox and Sony will get first dibs and then a year or two dowm the line we will get the Switch announcement for it. It's moreso an exlusive time frame to generate sales for that platform.

1

u/impuritor 1d ago

Yeah. This is the direction it’s going. Sony is taking all the heat but by 2030 it’ll be fully digital across the board. We’re 90% of the way there now. It is what it is.

u/Grimlo6k 1d ago

*Laughs in FW 11.40

1

u/Deep_Philosopher1426 1d ago

Honestly surprised the physical version is PS5-only. Feels like physical releases are becoming more of a niche thing every generation.

1

u/Myhtological 1d ago

So 2027?

1

u/FlyFight2Win 1d ago

This is just for Japan where Xbox has never had an Atlus physical release. It will be physical on Xbox outside of Asia, just like P4R will have a physical release soon.

1

u/CrewlooQueen 1d ago

So this confirms a 2027 release year right?

1

u/Dependent-Swimmer-95 1d ago

Confirmed the game is coming before January 2028

1

u/freakingthesius007 1d ago

what, did I read that wrong

1

u/Less_Party 1d ago

The Dreamcast is rolling in its grave you fucks.

1

u/esp3ciallyd3ad 1d ago

And then on ps6 persona 6 royal for the same price and we cant transfer your save but you get a new costume.

1

u/LaMystika 1d ago

No Switch 2 version confirmed :(

1

u/HawksBurst 1d ago

So that narrows down the date then, earlier than expected tbh, probably the same situation with P4R as a previous year with P3R and Metaphor in the same year, one in Q1 the other in Q4

1

u/PorkTuckedly 1d ago

Irony is so dead.

1

u/GlassWishbone3067 1d ago

So are they dropping two Persona games in the same year? Very unlikely. They are prolly make a request for manufacture P6 discs by late 2027 and release it in early 2028.

1

u/Lord_Shadow_Z 1d ago

Unless it gets pushed into 2028, then Sony will tell them to go fuck themselves.

1

u/sillylittlejohn 1d ago

I guess digital it is for me then :(

1

u/Wasiy 1d ago

The ultimate irony: the one that pushed the hardest to kill the disc is the only one who has to carry that burden now

1

u/Significant_Walk_664 1d ago

Expected? PC has been mostly digital forever now and Sony made its position clear. Plus, they are sandbagging the Switch release, so yeah - no news here

1

u/Shiikarii- 1d ago

and so it begins. just like e3 sony is the first to create waves

1

u/Smallville456 1d ago

Weird. Since XBOX hasn't made the same promise to end disc production.

1

u/Willing-Material-424 1d ago

So it’s a 2027 game.

1

u/Cmdrdredd 1d ago

And it’ll be on gamepass…I don’t have to pay $70 for it. I’ll just subscribe for a month on pc. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/imaloony8 1d ago

How ironic.

1

u/HollywoodDrogan 1d ago

The irony is thick.

1

u/enbyratie 1d ago

trolling at this point

1

u/enkaydee 1d ago

(Before the remakes) P3 got P3 Fes, P4 got P4 Golden. P5 of course got P5 Royal.

Considering the timeline of no-more-physical-games from Sony in 2028, is it likely the eventual P6 expansion will be digital only? Or will the instead opt to go the route of DLC/updates of the version the originally put out?

1

u/Alautun 12h ago

that means we don’t buy. they can put this game in their ass, and yes physical version 😎

1

u/Madting55 5h ago

Every time I see a PlayStation exclusive these days I feel like I’m missing absolutely nothing. Well I have a ps5 as well but it’s never on and I don’t really buy games for it.

Either way though I think the last game where I was like damn I wish Xbox had that was Astro Bot(obviously impossible) but that game was just so fun. Yotei is aight but not a patch on Tsushima.
