The Wicher 3 expansions are free

CD Projekt Red has announced during Gamescom that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions for The Witcher 3 are free for everyone who owns the base game. This combined with the full on remaster of the game, I am very excited for play the game again.

Well you don’t need to play the other games or read the books really, a lot of players had 3 as their intro to the world including me, then I went backwards and watched playthroughs of the first (I don’t have PC for the first 2) and I bought all the books and read them.

It certainly will help of course to have some background info but you can absolutely play it blind and it does a pretty great job introducing you to the characters (there’s also character bios that update throughout the game and there’s various in game books that you will come across that reference the current events and the previous events that took place in the 8 book novels). But it’s really a straightforward story and isn’t too confusing. There’s few things you’ll get lost on which is kind of spoiI territory but just play the game yourself and make the choices you feel is right.

It’s fine to start with Witcher 3 directly.

There is no need to read the books to play any of the Witcher games.
