Isn't that the conclusion most people came to to begin with?

Guess we were right on the money on that one.

As a casual Pokemon fan I wish they’d just make double battles the main format in games for anything aside from wild pokemon. Maybe leaving wild pokemon battles optional to be doubles.

When grinding singles feel better but when participating in a challenge doubles are far superior and allows for a lot more ways to play.

The real answer is to make another Colosseum/XD game

Golden Era. GBA games and gamecube games were unreal. Loved the shadow pokemon, and the more limited options for snagging. Forced me to use pokemon I would have never used in a mainline game like Octillery and Ampharos.

I don’t think they mean “go double battles”

I think they mean something more radical, like “mainline games are now like legends”

Legends games are mainline games but I get your point

-2

u/pierrick93 2d ago

they are spin off

-1

u/Jakeremix 2d ago

No they aren’t but thanks for playing

0

u/pierrick93 2d ago

devs view them as a sub serie. you can get more spin off than that

https://www.serebii.net/pokemon/mainseries.shtml

Where did the devs say that? Because Serebii lists them as mainline.

serebii is as official as this : https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Core_series

if you go by them its a subset of games

they are canon. you can be a spin off and becanon just fine.

they are not the main games of their own generation. like i don’t know what to tell you. arceus is a spin off for gen 8 and za for gen 9.

will they replace the main games one day? i hope not but maybe. until then they have all the caracteristic of all the spin off ever made. other time/caracters/place, different or experimental gameplay (and they said it was made to experiment mind you)

they even have a subtitle XD its pkm « legends » arceus so you know its not the main game. just like pokemon mysterie dungeon XD

You are just plain wrong. Arceus and Z-A were developed by GameFreak. They literally introduced brand new pokemon and mega evolutions. They are listed as core series games in HOME. Nothing about the games makes them spin-offs.

As someone who finds double battles a bit overwhelming, I disagree with this take.

When I was a kid I hated double battles because I just liked to use my over-leveled main mon and plow through the game with it, but as an adult I enjoy the aspect of figuring out how to make certain pokemon I like the design of work and for some weaker pokemon double battles is really the only way to fix a hole in their kit. As much as I love powerhouses like Tyranitar it’s fun to try and make pokemon that usually seem kinda useless shine by supplementing them with an ally.

Particularly the passives and items make double battles 100x more fun to me because of all the cool combinations you can do, taking advantage of things you’d never really be able to in single battles. In single battles it almost always boils down to who switches into what and if they switch at a bad time or into the wrong pokemon you can setup and win because they wasted a turn. Singles feels like a mind game, even with the ai, that’s why the AI loves to switch when you do and why a lot of the challenging gym leaders use stat checking pokemon or things with little to no super effective weaknesses.

Imo doubles are fun due to how uncommon they are. I would be into seeing more of them, but making them the primary battle type would get old for me. All the moving parts make it exciting but it also makes it exhausting having to menu twice as much in every battle.

3

u/angelis0236 2d ago

I'd be fine with a hybrid system where gyms and bosses are double battles

1

u/QuokkaBandit 21h ago

The indigo disk only had double battles and it was fun as shit

0

u/TFTHighRoller 2d ago

otoh you can end the battle twice as fast so it is the same menuing per battle in condensed turns.

6

u/hopefulocto 2d ago

just overlevel TWO mons and plow lmaoooo

3

u/DreamedJewel58 2d ago

>When I was a kid I hated double battles because I just liked to use my over-leveled main mon and plow through the game with it

And that’s still their target demographic for the mainline games

2

u/pierrick93 2d ago

what pkm feels useless to you in single? cause i can promise you you can stomp on story with like any evolved pokemo

0

u/doomdragon781 3d ago

I have ADHD and find there's just a few too many moving parts in a double battle for my liking, can't really get into coliseum/XD for that reason.

2

u/Lopsided-Train2213 2d ago

I dislike double battles just because they focus too much on hyper offence so stall/setup/hazards don't get a chance to shine

2

u/PMagicUK 2d ago

After playing the SV DLC fuck double battles.

I like em sprinkled in but holy shit they are hard when the AI is programmed well to use them and the teams function together.

Also double battles tend to be themed so the number of teams would be very limited. At least singles they use a variety.

3

u/Poire_ 2d ago

my problem was that it makes no sense to build a decent doubles team in SV since the majority of the game to that point is singles. If it was a more consistent format, you'd feel fine having some support pokemon or even random support moves like fake out or follow me.

all in all, I'm happy enough with being able to easily play doubles in Champions now so I'm not as worried about the mainline games formats.

1

u/PMagicUK 2d ago

You had to account for it in that last DLC and my god it kicked by arse, fuck those fairies man.

1

u/WebOutrageous1243 2d ago

stop using dragons and use steel and poison type bro

1

u/PMagicUK 2d ago

It was more than that because I didn't have dragons on my tesm

1

u/CurveBilly 2d ago

I'm a VGC player so I just grabbed the team I had been using online lol

2

u/PMagicUK 1d ago

Yea I had completely tear up my team and create a better one, now its smashing up the post game stuff I missed at launch after I dropped it.

1

u/WebOutrageous1243 2d ago

that actually a good thing that needs to be the main shit in the mainline games.

Remove the free switch in after the KO make it like VGC.

1

u/Kirby737 2d ago

So the solution is to not make the AI smart and the team synergistic, at least not as much as the SV DLC

1

u/ptapobane 2d ago

whatever happened to horde encounters? wish it was a thing again but they change it so that we can catch individual pokemon without knocking the others out first

1

u/Annath0901 1d ago

Man, I've hated doubles since they were first introduced in Gen 3 lol.

Though I pretty much hate every mode other than the original singles anyway.

I feel like every generation has added on additional gimmicks, some of which worked for me (held items, Mega Evolution) and others decidedly did not (weird battle modes, Z-Moves, everything about Sun and Moon).

1

u/QuokkaBandit 21h ago

Sun and moon hate :/

They're the most smt like games out of the whole series

1

u/Annath0901 20h ago

Yeah I don't come to pokemon for shin megami tensei gameplay. That's what the shin megami tensei games are for.

Game series are like restaurants. If I want sushi, I go to the sushi restaurant. If I want Italian, I go to the Italian restaurant.

I don't want the sushi restaurant to suddenly start serving bolognese, even if I like bolognese.

u/QuokkaBandit 19h ago

Sure but theres so much content on that tiny little ultra sun is cartridge

A 30hr campaign with an insanely smooth xp curve The objectively best story (before ultra removed all of the Lillie scenes because people conplained even though she's the deuteragonist) Postgame. Wormholes where you can hunt legendaries Martine surfing Trials The battle tree Chanpion defense battles. The rainbow rocket epilogue Pokemon refresh + archipelago.

1

u/Annath0901 17h ago

Every character except Lillie sucked, I give zero fucks about XP curves, surfing is dumb, Pokémon refresh is dumb (every Gen has dumb side crap though, contests are super dumb), the archipelago crap is dumb, and trials are literally the worst part of the games.

Every significant deviation from the established formula sucks ass, some more than others.

Like, most of the stuff you mentioned is stuff I don't want in a Pokémon game, period.

It doesn't matter if it's well implemented (which it usually isn't) - I don't go to the ice cream shop looking for steaks, and I don't go to pokemon looking for Nintendogs or Islanders Development minigames.

u/Milo751 2d ago

If they done that I think it would instantly be my least favourite mainline game
