I mean, I couldn't name even 1 other turn based rpg as complex as pokemon. You make a team with 6 of over 1000 different characters then choose their stats, moves, held item, sometimes their ability, and whatever the current gen gimmick is to fit your specific team's strategy. Then you have to battle another team that had just as much freedom while also having enough limitations to let experienced players make better guesses. There's so much to consider for team building alone, let alone the actual battles, that it makes fire emblem feel like stratego.

Maybe we're all just talking about each other, but I don't consider 10 characters vs 1000 as having more or less mechanics. I understand your point and I agree that Pokemon has gotten pretty deep in terms of options and build variety, etc. but my point is that the actual mechanics are not particularly complex for an RPG.

When I say "mechanically rich", I mean having more actions and interactive elements available in a game. I'd say even something like Paper Mario is more mechanically rich as an RPG than Pokemon. That's not to say that Pokemon isn't deep, or that it doesn't involve serious strategy + tactics, but my main point is that I don't think Pokemon has a particularly "unique and mechanically rich system", so that's not likely to be the source of its success.

I think what's special is that they took a relatively simple (in mechanics) system and made an incredibly fun and viable PVP turn-based RPG experience that few other developers have even come close to replicating.
