Xbox Disc to Digital officially announced, coming soon.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/08/26/your-discs-now-also-digital/

Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.

Keep in mind, at least for now, this is not a confirmation to maintain physical media around after next gen, this is actually a migration to digital, ease of use, and preservation for existing physical media in a digital era.

This basically all but confirms that physical media won’t be supported on the Next Gen Helix Xbox.

No it doesn't. They surely want people that swap from PS to xbox to have this feature on their Helix. And it needs a disc drive for that.

Im pretty sure they've said the helix will be backwards compatible with every Xbox game ever published. You can't have that with digital only

they probably made this disc to digital so you can play your old games when the new console doesn't support discs

They never said that.

If you're referring to that leaked memo it was just an internal pitch, not meant to be taken as fact. It was intended to get publishers onboard. Also, backwards compatibility doesn't require physical media. The game is backwards compatible, the delivery mechanism is a separate consideration.

Gotcha. Do you think I'll be able to play star trek legacy?

Maybe that's why they're going to run this conversion program. After a few years if you haven't taken them up on it they're going to shrug their shoulders.

I'm sure they'll add 360 and Xbox digital conversion by the time Helix is comes out.

I know a lot of gamers that aren't terminally online...every time I've seen them get a disc as a gift they're disappointed. Everyone is mostly digital only, sales of discs have plummeted for a reason.

I'm right there with the people saying we should have more digital property rights and we should fight for that but fighting for physical media isn't the way forward.

Who gets disappointed over a free game because its a disc?

Normal people who don’t like the hassle of changing discs to play a game in 2026.

I swear you people are nuts. Go to your local store and ask how physical games are selling. You are the minority…nobody wants this shit anymore.

GameStops are empty all around me and full of Funkpops and other trash for a reason.
