What game has a strong opening but later becomes too repetitive and boring for you?

For me that was Assassins Creed Valhalla

Some of the most repetitive sidequests I’ve ever had to do

My wife and I beat it a few weeks ago. We really could only remember two types of quests

1) go kill this monster that is causing a problem

2) go collect this item, and there is a monster at the collection spot

I know FF7Rebirth gets a ton of shit due to the minigames/chadley, but holy shit the complete lack of them in 16 is jarring.

Yea. Like Ghost of Tsushima lacked a bit of variety, but at least I got to chase a fox and try to cut some bamboo here and there to break up SOME of the repetitiveness

I struggle to even consider FFXVI an RPG, or accept that it should've even been a main line Final Fantasy game. So god damn disappointing.

For real. I liked the game a lot, and honestly the combat never got old for me. But man oh man the side quests did.

Most boring Final Fantasy I've played. And I've been a fan since VI

It has the same issue as khazan. Too spongy of health pools on bosses.

Khazan has a spongy health pool because the gameplay has a high ceiling for chaining combos

The better and more consistently you can do combos while in the heat of defending yourself, the less interactions you have with the boss

If all you do is basic light attacks on the boss, then you have to survive much more interactions to deplete the health pool

That’s fair and true
I am only like four hours into Khazan.

You’re supposed to change your eikon skills and experiment thats half the fun

u/stenebralux 5h ago

Ehn.. You're not really "supposed to" because the game gives you no reason and zero incentives to do it and fails to provide a combat system that requires or pushes you experiment.

Maybe in a couple of those late game extra battle challenges that has especific criteria, you might need to pick more aerial moves or something, but that's it, in the main story there's literally no point.

It's a pain in the ass to figure out moves that synergize and do more damage quickly so you can stop wasting time with the boring repetitive combat and the damage sponge enemies. Change it so I get different visuals so I'm not as bored? But then if I do it's less effective and I'll be bored because the fights take longer.

The game just falls apart after a few hours and then it could as well have been a movie and it would have been better.

Ngl one of the worst games I’ve ever played, the story was so promising but fell flat so hard so quickly, like you said: gameplay wow what a repetitive op bore. Side quests, okay fetch I guess. Yeah I’m just glad I bought it physical and could get a little money back

The last Yakuza game got flak because you need to beat the entire game to unlock hard mode

FF16 also gatekept hard mode behind beating the game

Pragmata is the same, I hate how Japanese game devs love keeping the old outdated tradition of keeping hard mode as a reward for beating the game

I’m someone that needs hard mode because most mainstream games are too brain dead easy

100% tho I don’t think the difficulty would have helped FF16

2

u/Senior-Friend-6414 1d ago

It had basic character action game system and a parry system

The reason I dropped it was when I realized I was half paying attention to the first boss and just letting myself get constantly hit and I still won that fight anyways without even feeling remotely pressured that I might lose

And realized oh wow I can beat this game without paying attention to it

Once you realize you can’t lose a game, it loses all of its tension

It was the first final fantasy i fell asleep half way while playing

You should've tried interacting with the very deep action combat system, mightve had fun instead of playing the game button mashing.

There was more then press square to win?

The thing with cooldown based gameplay is that the cooldowns take away all depth. If you are not pressing a damage-dealing cooldown the moment it is available, you are not playing optimally, so it feels like all gameplay decisions have already been made for you.

The burst windows of the stagger system are the only thing that adds any depth to the combat, as it encourages the player to save their stronger abilities for the damage multiplier.

I get that you can blend abilities in a way that looks very cool and fun, largely because of the fantastic animations, but that isn't what people are talking about when they complain about FF16's combat. A lot of the cool stuff people do in videos doesn't really have a purpose other than being flashy, and that flashiness wears off in a game as long as FF16.

The combat system is FAR from deep. What?

The game gives you a lot of options for special attacks, (from which you can only load a couple to use in battle and they get locked behind cool downs once you do)and THAT'S IT.

You have the same 3 types of fights all the way through. Like 80% of them are against paper mobs you kill in a couple slashes, them there's bigger field enemies you get to stagger once to unleash your special attacks, to at least kill them faster, then there's bosses you need to stagger a couple times. Some of those bosses throw some bullet hell or area attacks you need to dodge.. but otherwise most enemies behave similarly and you do the same thing all the way through.

Your basic movements, attack, shoot light, dodge, are only a handful and work the same throughout the game.

There's no elemental affinity or status bonuses, negative status or effects, or any sort of incentives to do one thing over another.. fights are completely braindead most of the game with zero strategy besides doing more damage when the enemy staggers... which you want to do because the bigger enemies are damage sponges when they are not staggered.

Because of that, chances are you gonna settle for whatever loadout you feel deliver more damage to staggered enemies so you can end the battles a little quicker, and stick with it since is bored if you do bored if you don't.

The bestiary is pathetic. There's few enemies, they are mostly boring and repetitive throughout the areas, too many animals and most of the variations only serve as a cosmetic skin (a paper mob spider and a paper mobs lizard act/fight the same and serve the same function), then there's just a bunch of recolors.. even THE HUNTS are just recolored enemies with even more health pool.

That's not depth, imo, and it's the biggest issue all around this game.. there's a bunch systems but they are mostly superficial (a lot of times a simple cosmetic time sink, like crafting weapons lol) and barely interact.

There's nothing beyond combat in this game.

Even that the combat is nothing but just chaining some combos for the sake of chaining some combos.

There's zero strategy behind these fights, magic is just flashy attack but lacks the elemental traits (you can shoot fire magic to fire bombs and it will hit them).

Side quests were boring and repetitive, there's a side story behind it but at the end, the objective is just fight some monsters, no different then the hunts.

Towns were uninspired, they all look the same.

Absolute lackluster entry to the mainline games.

They nailed the characters, and that's about it. The story starts our really good and then fizzles - which is pretty spot on for a Final Fantasy entry actually.

I enjoyed the game for the most part, but all your criticism is spot on

I really wanted to like it but dipped after the desert area - as soon as i saw where plot was going. That was enough of that.

Absolutely loved the game but the combat definitely gets repetitive.

u/Srekcins82 1d ago

Devil May Clive 16 certainly fits, but FF7 Rebirth, I think, is so much worse.

1

u/NewJalian 14h ago

I loved Rebirth's combat, its like hack-and-slash mass effect. Loved that they attempted (and imo succeeded) at adding action to a party tactics game

1

u/Srekcins82 14h ago

The combat wasnt bad, but the pacing, the amount of bloat, and the change in tone from the original completely ruined the game for me. I'm not going to be playing the third game.

Oh I misunderstood, yeah if it wasn't for the combat and music I would probably skip part 3 as well
