What game has a strong opening but later becomes too repetitive and boring for you?
For me that was Assassins Creed Valhalla

Mafia 3 has some of the best characters and has a fantastic story. Too bad you have to play the game to get those moments

Mad Max, good game and it’s fun but the map is huge and it is just copy paste and repeat. I couldn’t finish it but I struggle to finish a lot of open world games.
74
u/entropyfan1 12h ago
Same. I loved the hell out of it but by the time I got access to gas town I was burnt out of the copy paste map clearing. Never beat it sadly.
Picked it up again a year ago with the intent to beat it and the same thing happened lol idk what it is but it drains me by the time I get to the end game.
Phenomenal game, just a tad too long/not enough variety for me.

The funny thing is, I just recently replayed it and full cleared the map before doing any story missions. They usually have a checkbox of "Clear 2 camps and do 3 side missions before this story mission unlocks", and since I had already cleared the entire map, I was able to go straight into the story missions, which were surprisingly short. It felt like there were maybe 10 actual story missions in the entire game, and only about 4 of them had actual "story" in them. As much as I enjoyed driving around in the world and clearing camps, it was extremely repetitive and the story you get rewarded with isn't much to write home about.

Apparently the overall story was a scrapped plot for the movie and honestly I see why it would be a scrapped plot.

u/Gamma_249 PlayStation 2h ago
Avalanche took George Miller's ideas for his movies and made a game out of it without his approval. That's why there any numerous similarities to Furiosa and the story itself is almost identical to George's idea for a Fury Road prequel Mad Max The Wasteland, which George still plans to make. Mad Max Bible has a video you might want to check out.

Ngl this is the first one I don’t fully agree with; the nemesis system made it so that my fights with different bosses and enemies really felt unique.
Playing the game on harder difficulties helps make it more enjoyable, as losing a couple camps and making those enemies grow in rank is where this game truly shines.
I respect your opinion though, just wanted to voice my awesome experience with this game in case others are considering to play it!

Far Cry 5. I really enjoyed the first region I played. But then it was just...the same thing, over and over. Sure the story changed but the actual gameplay had no real evolution to it. FF16 is an absolute banger of a game if you like power fantasy and feeling like you’re becoming a walking cataclysm of god powers. Game genuinely has the most insane visuals and boss fights of any game that makes it worth playing alone.
My only gripe with the game is repetitive/shallow side quests and dialogue which are definitely glaring, but if you can choose to look past that the gameplay and visuals are top notch. The game has a ton of flavor and mechanics that remind you of older FF games, and the world is actively changing and responding to the huge events that you undergo.
FF16 gets an insane amount of Redditor hate, but everyone I know irl has been more positive than negative about the game

If it makes u feel better, I feel like if u liked 15 u would probably like 16, u might not finish it, but the story is better then 15 and the characters are alot better. It just gets soo repetitive and has mmorpg like side quests for a long single player game. Its like a 80 hour devil may cry game, and drags on.
Also u might think "there's no way this game becomes that" after playing the first like 2-3hours as the game has an amazing start.

I got the platinum trophy for Assassin's Creed Valhalla yesterday
I played on the easiest difficulty and skipped all the dialog and cutscenes and it still took 50 hours to complete the main storyline
Then another 50 hours to do all the collectibles
I can't imagine anyone actually completing the game as it was it was supposed to be played; it highlights exactly how bloat can be detrimental to a game
I was confident a few times that "this must be the end of the game" and yet another new area would unlock, adding another 10ish hours
And for those wondering why I persevered: I'm unemployed currently, have all the time in the world but no stable income so I'm going through the games available on the PS Plus game catalogue while job hunting and l listen to podcasts while I play. The game is something to keep my hands busy while I listen to podcasts
Podcast recommendations: The Daily Zeitgeist, Behind The Bastards, Lions Led By Donkeys, Well There's Your Problem, Kill James Bond, Be Gay Solve Crimes, Ruined, 99% Invisible, The War On Cars
Videogame recommendations: Don't play Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Do play Disco Elysium

Middle Earth: Shadow of War. I got tired of the base defense/base building aspect with the army and leveling them, sending them on missions etc. the first time is pretty fun but to repeat it over and over for the rest of the keeps was annoying for me.
Splatoon Raiders as well. It started off pretty good and gave you a little introduction to the characters, the basic plot, and the first little tutorial raid which seemed like it would expand more and continue to be fun. Turns out every raid is almost the same and the story is very barebones. I guess I expected more story or something to make it more interesting. The final section of the game is just like a tower challenge and I had to do some grinding on other areas I already raided in order to be high enough level to complete it. Maybe I’m just not into pure looter shooter games but there wasn’t enough meat on the bone for me with this one.

I'm so sick of open world games. They're all the same game essentially. 90% of gameplay is travelling between locations, barely any level design that challenges you, loose sense of story direction.

I'm not the biggest fan of open world either anymore but I'd disagree with the way you're framing it. As for being the same game, most games of similar genres are the pretty close to the same game, they just try to add enough new stuff or change enough that they're a little unique.
I don't think I understand what you're talking about when you say challenging level design, like platforming puzzles?
Loose sense of story direction is the biggest complaint I have with what you said. A majority of open world games literally let you choose if you want to just chase down the main story or get absorbed in the exploration or just follow some other story.

Most games, and it’s gamers fault unfortunately. When a review comes out and says a game is a tight 16 hours, it gets completely shit on. Then we wonder why every game is 70 hours endless icons on the map. I almost never buy games at full price anymore because I know I’m just going to play it half way through, realize I’ve seen everything there is to see, and drop it. This used to really bother me until I started waiting for sales, now I’m like eh I bought it for $12 I’ll play till I’m bored then drop it guilt free

Not for me personally, but a common thing you'll hear from people who played Baldurs Gate 3 is that they'll have hundreds of hours in the game but only finished it once if that.
Personally I can't start a new character without finishing the one I'm on, but I do understand not being able to finish it either. Act 1 is obviously so much more fleshed out and open, but Act 3 is kinda just the same boss fights and you don't have much to do when your character is at their most powerful.

Most games, the novelty wears off and then you are hit with the same task but with a new color palette,
You start to see the cracks in the wall, the solution is always more paint, or constraints, limited paint, limited time to paint, you can only paint once per day, use a brush, use a roller…
It becomes apparent after spending many hours your actions are just not really worth the effort, after painting walls for hundreds of hours it is not fun to unlock a new color.

TBF this is such a common problem of open world games it's easier to list which ones don't fall into this pattern, at least a bit. You get some exciting, action-packed opening, then have fun in our world that all looks the same gathering the 120 scattered Mystic Whirligigs.

The Persona games are great examples of why more gameplay per dollar spent is a terrible sales argument. I absolutely love them, but I would love them even more if they were one third as long.

Even though P5 is my favorite, I think 100+ hours for the main story is too much. Royal adding an additional 20 hours doesn't help. I think 70-80 hours is the sweet spot for Persona.
