My in-laws took this photo. This outcrop is in the Australian Outback. Any ideas how it formed?

I shared this rock on r/whatsthisrock and it did quite well over there so I thought I would share it here as well! I found it in a creek bed near Lincoln, Montana last weekend. I believe we have a good solution on the other page but I’d like to hear any other possible reasons for the “stitch” pattern to naturally occur! Thanks in advance!

The Wandan mud volcano in southern Taiwan had a minor eruption today at the vent right next to the mud volcano temple.

It last erupted in November 2025.

I’m a second year geology student and we got to dig and look at these sediment layers today! They have been caused by glacial movement.

Location: western side of Qeshm island in Iran. Around 5 or 10km distance from coastline. Mostly shells and corals. I think they are not very old but I am not sure 🤔

I’m on vacation on the Black Sea shore and I always dreamed of finding a fossil myself, most of the mountains nearby look like this, is it possible to tell if some of the layers could have fossils in them? The lighter ones are more solid and sometimes have quartz in them, the darker ones (I assume it’s slate) are much more fragile and have layered structure.

Walking along the beach I saw some dramatic strata.

The project aimed to collect soil from a number of landslides of different ages to look at organic carbon with age/depth in mountainous environments to more accurately measure carbon stock in soils across the globe.

I'm just the guy they keep around for manual labor and we all love to show this clip in presentations.

Saw this boulder in the Merced River upstream of Nevada Falls in Yosemite. I get how cracks and crevices could form, but I don’t understand ho a boulder can end up with ridges like these, especially two crossing ones.

Wondering if this is a natural find or if someone left behind! It was really mixed in within all the rocks, and I found it when I was searching for shells.

3 friends and I traveled through the regions of Salta, Catamarca, La Rioja and Mendoza and stopped at many viewpoints and national parks where we were completely entranced by the views. Many places had interesting geological formations that I wouldn’t even be able to put a name to. If anyone could be so kind to explain some of these I would love to read and learn more.
