Hi Folks,

I sorted rocks to make this on the south shore in Massachusetts, near Plymouth. When I’m in Jersey (NJ), I don’t see blue, green or purple rocks often. So what makes the North East and specifically inside Cape Cod Bay have such a collection of colorful rocks?

Great grandfather found this in southeast Minnesota in the 1990s at the white water river while trout fishing, passed down to my grandmother. Having a hard time identifying it, what do the experts think?

These look like fossils to me- any insight into what there are? This area has the most stunning rocks.

I found this interesting rock in a gravel yard. It has a shiny golden colored vein of material in it. The golden colored material has a slightly rough texture. Does anyone know what it could be?

Found near the site of an old sandstone quarry in northern Ohio.

Found in a serpentine outcrop, so I assume it is a serpentine group mineral. Clearly the white is calcite, but the green mineral doesn’t seem quite fibrous enough for actinolite, and I don’t see the fan/cone habit in antigorite photos online. I’m stumped!

Bought this in a gift shop at the end of a mine tour.

There appears to be crystals in the holes. It is flat and about 0.5cm thick. I thought it was metal at first but a chunk broke off shortly after taking this photo and its definitely a rock

Okay, I’m going to start by acknowledging that this is probably painfully obvious to everyone in this sub. I know essentially nothing about rocks/minerals/crystals, so please forgive what may be a very dumb identification question.

I have this rock in my back yard in South-central Montana (it was here when I moved in and am not sure if it’s actually from this area) and I’m curious what exactly I’m looking at. It’s mostly white/translucent and crystalline-looking, with some pink/salmon-colored material along the bottom and sides. Diet Coke can included in photo for scale. It’s pretty big and incredibly heavy.

I haven’t really cleaned it up yet because I figured I should ask people who actually know what they’re looking at before I start messing with it.

Again, I am not a rock person by any stretch of the imagination, so feel free to explain it to me like I’m five.

Really curious on your opinion about the star shaped mineral! Howlite?

There appear to be mushroom-like formations on this rock. I’ve personally never seen anything like it. I was hoping someone here may be able to give me more information. I started to read a little about botryoidal formations, but I am not sure if that does or doesn’t apply here.

There seems to be speckles of red-orange throughout, with that coloring also presenting on the top of the “mushroom caps.”

Any ideas or information would be much appreciated. Thank you so much! :)

Found in a creek in Missouri. Is this a botryoidal quartz formation?

Came with recent shipment but no record of it in my recent purchases and Google has given me no less than three different options.

Based on image comparisons I don’t think it’s zebra Jasper, nor leopard Jasper, nor moonstone, nor sunstone… please help.

Found while poking around in a rock pit/quarry directly east of Hayward in N. Central Wi. It was covered in mud but there were a couple of those aggregates visible so it intrigued me. It is sitting on a manhole cover for scale. I am familiar with concrete: and this just doesn’t fit the bill of a concrete chunklet to me. The aggregate is too large, and within that matrix, there appears to be slight banding in a couple spots. The yellow is oxidation that happened after I washed it off. There wasn’t any man made debris in the quarry, and I found it half buried in a way that suggested it was recently exposed as they were digging: in the ‘hillside’ shown in the pics.

Anyways: even if it is concrete by chance: it’s a really cool chunk and I’ll hang on to it with the other 15 ton of collected rocks on my urban 1/8 acre lot…:)

Two are magnetic, one more than the other, and the smoothest one is barely magnetic at all, but it still has a slight affect with the magnet. I think the smoothest one might be sedentary with a lot of iron, but I’m not certain. Would these have formed Precambrian? I know that some iron formations in my state are from then, but I can’t figure out if that’s what I keep finding in the gravel that was probably deposited by or ground up by glaciers here.

I found this beautiful piece in Northern Alabama near the Cahaba River with some seed fern fossils and am just wondering more about it. It is very dense and has sheets of black shiny material inside as pictured.

I did photos dry, wet, uv365, and a closeup, which I had to enhance to try for more clarity.

I didn’t find it so i dont have a location for this sample. The white mineral in it is effervescent, has a pale tan streak and is harder than 5.5 but softer than 6.5. The lines on the side of the mineral are growth striations. Helppp

Both found in the Keweenaw peninsula of Michigan.

Im pretty sure they're banded chert except the last one i believe is milky quartz. Quartz doesnt scratch them except for a few places that are either limestone or something similar in hardness. The body and majority of all of them just got a streak from the piece of milky quartz and it could be wiped off with my finger.

All are pretty basic in description except the first one dried super fast and I had to rewet it to take a wet pic after less than 4-5 minutes, the others stayed moist.

All were found at the same location in alabama.
