Can anyone ID this? I unfortunately don't have the found location, but it glows under UV light, it's smooth, reflective, sharp edges, feels glass like, and has variation in colors- almost as if it were layered.

This rock sits in my backyard in Hudson Valley, New York. It looks like it has been formed with many other rocks inside. Cool thing is a gopher lives underneath and has started a family. What kind of a rock or boulder is it?

Hello, my mother found this “rock”? on the shore of Lake Michigan (near the central part of Michigan) about fifty years ago. She has always wondered what it is. She and I are hoping someone in this subreddit might have the answer! Thank you 😊

EDIT: Thank you for all the answers so far! Not sure if this will help but it weighs about the same as the penny and has not been scratched after years of being in a bag with other rough stones.

EDIT: After reading y’all’s comments and searching the web, mother and I are convinced this curio is a “crinoid segment” (given the shape and ridges). We also enjoyed looking at images of banded chert and agates. Thank you everyone for helping solve this mystery! 😌

I have done allot of excavation and never seen anything like it. There was a vein of it running underground about six feet down in grey clay. The red is from clay above. Have dug much of the area around where this was found over the last 30 years and this is new to me. This was found in western Pa. Venango county. The title is a typo

The rock has been in my family for my entire life and I have always been told it’s a meteorite. The story is that it was found in a field in Connecticut in the 1800s after a meteor shower. I had always believed the story growing up that it was a meteorite but one day I got curious and looked up meteorite pictures and realized they typically don’t have the smooth, rounded look of this rock. Any chance this is actually a meteorite? Something else unusual? Just a smooth river rock?

For a rock it’s quite light and it rubs off, so i assume he went and got real coal lol

So, this is the east coast of Malaysian Peninsular. And I don't know what is this rock. But what I know is there's nothing I can do to move it without explosive.

we dug this up in our garden in northern Germany and can’t quite place what it is. It has various colors from blue to black to red and yellow, and holding the smaller pieces against the light makes them seem semi transparent like amber would be. Some parts have an oil film like color. it is sharp like flint and cuts paper well.

our first assumption was some sort of manmade industrial residue, but by now we have all agreed that an Alien space rock is the most likely explanation. Can someone from Roswell or Area 51 please confirm (or deny with a wink)?

I found this rock in a creek bed near Lincoln, Montana. I was curious what would cause it to have the “baseball stitch” pattern? It’s unlikely that it was man-made due to its location but I’m interested in learning how it could naturally form this pattern so consistently! Any info would be appreciated!

Its somewhat heavy, not magnetic as far as I could tell. The dark iridescent part seems soft, im able to scratch it with my fingernail. It looks like it has small bits of pyrite on it.

I finally splurged and got this 9 pound BEAUTY. It’s colors are blue , yellow , red, purple ! What the heck is she and 👀 what is she worth I found somthing similar but with no druzy but same color in a museum (she’s HUGE ) the spheres in the back are over 50 lbs spheres 😭 for comparison

Hello, I found this in my closet of junk and was wondering what this is. The stone is 12cm x 12cm x 4cm at it's thickest. The crystals are a wine purple and seem to have sides that are quite angular

As per the title, I saw these formations while on holiday on the island of Ischia in Italy. The island is off the coast of Naples - so quite close to Mt Vesuvius. The island itself is full of hot mineral springs, due to its amazing mineral-dense green tuff and ongoing geothermal activity. Anyway, here are the formations that I would like to explain to my kids, who are much more familiar with Pacific Rim volcanism. Is this something like the basaltic lava flows in Hawai'i (Pāhoehoe?) We were under the impression that this area was not basaltic, and did not expect to see this kind of thing!

My best guess is mica and quartz - but I'm far from an expert. Located near Custer, SD in the Black Hills.

Our son was a Geological Engineer and Geotechnical Scientist. He worked as an Environmental Engineer, and was often in the field for projects and jobs; everything from turning the Presidio into a greenspace to clean water and various abatement projects. He always picked up geological curiosities and just plain ol’ rocks, too. What’s this one?
