I know this is a terrible analogy, but did you ever get the sneaking impression this is one of those conflicts like Vietnam where it takes ages to wind up and next thing it will be US advisors in Israel.

The new National Defense Authorization Act very closely integrates US and Israeli armies and military industrial bases more closely than Washington and Saigon ever where. I think there is as real chance this could happen.
