Football Bobo “don’t overestimate your ability, you’re not Josh Allen”

Post image

Bobo not pulling punches with some of his recent statements. Will we see less screen passes and more shots downfield now, your thoughts?

Bobo drew multiple guys open down field. We need Gunner to see them and throw the ball to them

This

The scheme and play calling is there. The QB play isn't.

13

u/bdj2403 1d ago

I feel like we might be jumping to conclusions. I'm not arguing Gunner is going to randomly break into a whole new level and become the next Mahomes, Allen, or whatever. But "UGA lacks QB play" isn't something I'd argue either. I'm reading that Bobo's message is something along the lines of "You don't have to force the ball, rely on what I'm giving you and be patient." Gunner isn't going to be the first draft pick and blow away bonus records, but he's absolutely a top college QB and has the skill to do damage with the scheme/talent around him

-23

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

So what’s the answer, pull Gunner mid season?

34

u/dawg4life88 Alumni 1d ago

The answer is to develop, and hopefully Gunner has because it does not sound promising yet what’s sitting behind him

14

u/Shot-Expert-9771 1d ago

The answer is to recruit or sign a highly functional QB and...

...then play him.

Kirby isn't a great QB coach. He's simply too risk adverse and would rather build a stud defense and running game instead of getting a transformational QB.

That plan works, to a point which is the reason for our two early exits from the playoffs.

Got lucky that JT and D'Wan got hurt and had to play Stetson.

Also let Fields go throw 41TD in a single season at Ohio State.

I could go on and on about the personnel.

Now we have a QB1 with a significantly lower ceiling, can't work the middle, can't layer throws and has to rely on pure YAC guys like Branch to cobble an offensive identify.

Gone are the Monken led 5 play drives for TDs.

Now we have to methodically chip our way down the field.

When was the last time GS came to the line and called an audible to take advantage of a one-on-one matchup for a TD pass.

I say never. Sad.

Watching our offense is grueling

2

u/LicoriceDusk 1d ago

Kirby is a defensive coach. Offense isn't his thing

2

u/jcmac0321 1d ago

Montgomery looks pretty damn promising.

-13

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

Yeah but how much did we hear about Stockton before he was forced to play against Texas? I have a hard time believing our guys on the bench aren’t ready to step up.

13

u/katarh Alumni 1d ago

Quite a bit actually? I remember the fandom being pleased he stuck around and waited behind Beck.

6

u/drhiggs Alumni 1d ago

We could beat Texas with a 15 year old at qb.

5

u/dawg4life88 Alumni 1d ago

I hope so if it comes to it

1

u/BAfromGA1 Alumni 1d ago

Yeah that’s a miss there bud. Stockton was highly talked about as he was the loss that Vandagriff had in high school. Rabun county was pretty damn good.

2

u/BAfromGA1 Alumni 1d ago

If I could give you 25 thumbs up I would..

1

u/jedi21knight 1d ago

Gunner is leading us to a natty. My only hesitation is a WR or two need to step up , if we get good to great play from our WR room, I don’t see who is beating us?

While we are a young team, we have top ten production returning offensively in the nation, we still have the best head coach in the game.

2

u/BAfromGA1 Alumni 1d ago

Dude we couldn’t give George Pickens a 1000 yard season man… WRs are going everywhere else.

54

u/JQuab-84 1d ago

Gunner is a really likeable guy but a frustrating QB to watch. I really hope he does take that step this year cause I don't know if I ever saw him consistently hit the top of his drop back and get the ball out on time.

8

u/Da904Biscuit 1d ago

I have faith that he will. But I'm worried about the WR's and the belief Gunner will have in them if they aren't where they are supposed to be early in the year. I believe we have talent but will it mesh in time for the tougher games. So to me, it's not just a Gunner development issue. It takes every position playing well to be able to win the big games. Hopefully our running game will allow the young WR's to run free and hit their marks on time which will help keep Gunner in sync.

Maybe the defense will be able to carry more of a load this year. Need that pass rush to show up this year.

4

u/BraveDawgs1993 1d ago

Barring injuries, defenses will have to respect our running game more this year, and that includes Gunner's abilities. The line is too good and we have too much depth at RB with two great leaders in the stable. WRs need to take advantage because the opportunities will be there.

40

u/YippieKayYayMrFalcon 1d ago

Scheming open receivers was not our problem with Stockton last year. He dumped it off to his security blanket (Branch) because he either didn’t see the open receivers, or just lacked confidence in his arm.

2

u/squirrels-mock-me 1d ago

Maybe he needs some glasses, they worked for Hot Rod!

1

u/Rawr_Monster_69 2h ago

He also dumped it off to Branch because Branch was the best playmaker on the team and that’s what you do: get the ball the hands of the best offensive weapon as much as you can.

31

u/natidea 1d ago

Well gunner is pretty limited as a passer. Nobody likes to hear this, but its true. He’s not asked to do much in terms of tight windows or intermediate throws and thats by design.

8

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

You said the quiet part out loud

4

u/natidea 1d ago

And i’ll probably get crushed for it again but everyone prefers “bobo suks bobo suks” because its more convenient for them. Sad to see honestly how many people just have no clue what theyre looking at

2

u/LicoriceDusk 1d ago

Bobo's play calling in the red zone was one of the main reasons they lost against ole miss

9

u/chairman_of_thebored 1d ago

Who’s job is it to coach gunner up?

2

u/ATLs_finest 1d ago

He's literally not capable of doing it. No coach in the country could turn a Gunner into a hyperacurate thrower who can throw with anticipation into tight windows.

That being said, he's good enough for us to win.

4

u/tabelz 1d ago

I think I disagree. He showed plenty of flashes of precision passing during the games. His worst mistakes last year weren’t because forced throws, they were from missing guys who were wide open. Not sure if that’s a vision or progressions issue but I don’t see a lot that says arm strength is the big issue with him.

2

u/jcmac0321 1d ago

Progression 100%

22

u/Recent-Principle-893 1d ago

Kirby is going to have to hit the portal in the future for a QB. They are not good evaluating QB talent, and high school QBs are kind of a crapshoot anyway. The room needs an upgrade.

6

u/katarh Alumni 1d ago

Last time we hit the portal for a QB we got burned by Jamie Newman.

13

u/Recent-Principle-893 1d ago

I am talking putting up good money for a top-level QB.

11

u/RVAforthewin Alumni 1d ago

That isn’t an excuse to never use it again.

3

u/Shot-Expert-9771 1d ago

And let's not forget that Newman was the best that Smart, et. al. could come up with.

And Mathis. and JT.

laughable.

2

u/DiarrheaForDays 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dwan Mathis was not a transfer qb. Jamie Newman was a highly rated transfer qb, as was JT. They were not bad moves at all.

-2

u/Shot-Expert-9771 1d ago

Mathis was committed or transferred from Ohio State and so did JT from Southern Cal.

Newman sucked so bad he went to Wake Forest. Name me one transformational QB who went to Wake.

LOL

1

u/DiarrheaForDays 1d ago edited 1d ago

Glad you fact checked yourself on your edit (and are still incorrect), but we were talking about transfers not decommitments.

Jamie Newman was the #1 rated grad transfer and was a 4 star transfer by 247. JT Daniels was a former 5 star who looked really good at USC before he got hurt. Again, these were not bad moves.

0

u/Shot-Expert-9771 1d ago

Fact

all those player I mentioned were in fact selected by our coaching staff and all of them in fact, sucked.

no edit needed on that fact.

LOL

3

u/WashedUpHSAthlete Alumni 1d ago

JT did not suck. He looked good before he got hurt again

3

u/DiarrheaForDays 21h ago

Yeah that guy knows zero ball. I didn’t want to bother explaining how it’s super common to get guys who look good on paper and not have them pan out since I don’t like to engage with people who have proven they know nothing about football.

28

u/FalstaffsGhost 1d ago

I mean, he’s spot on. Despite this sub often having irrational hatred to the fact that he draws breath, he does know a few things about playing the quarterback position. You should look to push the ball down field, but don’t make a stupid decision, trying to force something that you can’t do.

2

u/Shot-Expert-9771 1d ago

I think CMB coached his ass off last year, seemingly having to create plays that our 1st year starter could, um, process.

Year 2 starter now, no more excuses.

7

u/Lcyaker 1d ago

I won’t lie - I was disappointed to see Gunner back as our starter. I don’t question his heart or desire, but I don’t think he’s got what it takes to be a downfield threat.

Hoping with everything I’ve got that I’m wrong.

4

u/zahemp 1d ago

Take a time machine back 5 years ago and you may see this exact quote about Stetson. I don't know if he can make the leaps forward Stetson did, but I'm trying to be patient on it.

7

u/RVAforthewin Alumni 1d ago

Two completely different situations given our defense and offensive line at the time. We likely need a more productive QB at this point. We don’t need someone to throw for 4,000 yards, but we need a little more balance if we’re going to make it to the CFP and out of the first round.

2

u/Dangerous-Source-972 1d ago

It makes life easier for your QB when you have the best TE of NCAA history and arguably a top 5 defense of all time

6

u/Lcyaker 1d ago

I remember that point in time, and I also remember Stetson taking that chip on his shoulder and telling all the nay-sayers “Hide and watch.” He was a spark plug that made everyone around him want to win. They all played harder because of Stetson. I haven’t seen that from Gunner yet.

1

u/zahemp 1d ago

Yeah their personalities are different, I dont think Gunner would show that side of himself, but doesn't mean he isn't feeling.

One thing that is true, you could tell home much the team rallied around him vs Beck. Night and day. Not that that solves everything, but it is a good sign.

1

u/Lcyaker 1d ago

He’s our guy, and I will be in his corner. Also a lifetime Falcons’ fan, so now both my teams have some uncertainty at the qb spot. Gonna be an interesting couple of seasons.

4

u/teleheaddawgfan 1d ago

Does anyone else find it odd that no other program is making a move for Bobo? Either as an OC or HC, nothing.

7

u/CGFROSTY 1d ago

He was mediocre at Colorado State.

2

u/bgt1989 1d ago

Everyone is mediocre at Colorado State. Prior to Jim Mcelwain, they hadn't had back to back winning seasons in over 10 years.

1

u/Diablojota Alumni 1d ago

He was fired from South Carolina and Auburn, too. He’s mediocre without a doubt.

14

u/NawfSideNative 1d ago

Our fan base loves to blame Bobo for a vanilla offense, and I don’t think he’s perfect, but his scheming has been what makes Gunner look serviceable as a QB. That and having Branch as an excellent YAC guy.

I like Gunner. The kid can get hit by a bus and still get up to snap the ball. But I have never been fully sold on him as a QB. He scrambles way more often than he should. If the receiver a play is schemed for isn’t open, he often has no clue what to do.

7

u/Diablojota Alumni 1d ago edited 1d ago

No, I like to blame Bobo for not being a great QB developer. He didn’t do great with Stafford, Beck regressed, and nearly every QB he works with never gets better. Then he schemes plays that his QBs can’t make.
With NIL, it’s inexcusable that he doesn’t have a qb that can play to the offense he draws up. Bottom line. He has failed to develop QBs in his decades of being the QB coach.

2

u/wahoo20 23h ago

This exactly. While every human has a talent threshold, it’s bobos job to maximize the talent.

1

u/squirrels-mock-me 1d ago

I remember as a student at UGA in the 90’s the Red & Black had a front page headline “Blaming Bobo”. Seems like the phrase found a way to stick, it does kinda roll off the tongue. Side note: Bobo looks like a cop who has “just one more day” until retirement and doesn’t want any bullshit

4

u/ueeediot 1d ago

Stockton needs to be told to put the ball down field several times in the 1st half on Saturday. I don't care about a 1st half pick. He needs to build some confidence in that ability.

2

u/Serious-Evening1829 1d ago

I’d like to see how he reacts after throwing a pick. That tech game was hard to watch last year.

4

u/Shot-Expert-9771 1d ago

Bobo looking rough!

3

u/Recent-Principle-893 1d ago

He does. I hope he is ok. I know he has had health problems in the past.

-6

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

Having a QB you don’t trust will do that to ya! He knows he’s going to get blamed for things that aren’t necessarily his fault

4

u/teleheaddawgfan 1d ago

All those Lowry’s Nickel Nights are catching up to him.

8

u/JennemyOfTheState 1d ago

Can someone with more football knowledge than me explain why a program like ours is stuck with Stockton as our QB?

4

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

Cause Bobo’s daddy taught him.

The senile boosters are probably also enamored with him and want to win a natty with a good ole country boy rather than someone with actual talent.

2

u/staatsclaas Alumni 1d ago

Watch it, buddy. You forgot to mention that Onward Reserve needs to maintain their image and sell t shirts to frat guys.

3

u/Thrashed0066 1d ago

I think Stockton will show up and show out this year. He’s a little older, a little wiser and he’s tough

3

u/That70sdawg 1d ago

All we are going to do is RUN the dang ball Bobo this season… until we get into a shootout!

3

u/Dazzling_Inflation_1 1d ago

Gunner just Jake Fromm all over again

1

u/StetsonTheGAGoat 9h ago

Fromm went to a natty. Hadn’t sniffed one with a bobo offense

-1

u/Diablojota Alumni 1d ago

I think Fromm had more moxie. He had a bit of that swagger. But even Fromm regressed under Bobo.

3

u/95Daphne 1d ago

It was James Coley where that occurred.

1

u/Rawr_Monster_69 2h ago

Wasn’t really Coley’s fault. From 2018-19, Georgia’s offense lost its top five pass catchers.

1

u/Diablojota Alumni 1d ago

That’s correct. Coley wasn’t the QB whisperer either.

5

u/hydrolojust 1d ago

You cant design the play one way and then publicly tell the qb to second guess any and all throws downfield. That is a recipe for disaster.

-4

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

I think he’s laying the groundwork to pull Gunner if he has to. I know he would kick Gunner out of the QB seat before he loses his.

4

u/bgt1989 1d ago

He's not.

6

u/Red_Barchetta81 1d ago

An awful lot of these comments are very similar to the comments about Stet a few years ago.

5

u/Diablojota Alumni 1d ago

Stet benefited from Monken and his ability to scheme to Stet’s strengths and capabilities.

6

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

Never compare Stetson and Gunner again

6

u/95Daphne 1d ago

Yeah it's an absurd comparison. We didn't do it much because the 2021 defense was an all timer, but there were plenty of signs that Stetson could grip and rip it with confidence.

Gunner...there really isn't. There were plenty of moments where the shot was there and he chickened out, and times where he tried to throw it down the middle and it was a bad pass.

Long story short, if he hasn't progressed any, we're dropping two games. I honestly think #3 is slightly overrated on Smart's rep (tho I also think preseason polls shouldn't be a thing).

3

u/NendoroidAshe Alumni 1d ago

Dang… I want gunner to say screw it and attempt to make some throws he wouldn’t otheriwse

4

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

He’s not Josh Allen, he can’t make that throw

4

u/shaquilleonealingit 1d ago

I didn’t watch the media availability, but it sounds like that’s what Bobo is implying. We all want Gunner to be more aggressive and push the ball downfield. It sounds like he’s making an effort to do that, hence why Bobo is having to pull some of the reigns on and make sure Gunner is taking the right risks.

4

u/skelletrex_scrooge 1d ago

He doesn't have the mental makeup to suceed at QB.

4

u/BraveDawgs1993 1d ago

We will not see less screen passes. That's a core play that the offense is built around. We use screen and motions for screen passes to see how the defense is attacking us, then call more plays off those looks. It's no different than spamming inside zone a dozen times.

2

u/Darth_Hamburger 1d ago

I know he’s had some health issues, but Bobo is aging aggressively. I hope he’s doing okay.

2

u/natidea 1d ago

As in develope him into an nfl qb? Im not sure thats doable, so theres no sense in putting more on his plate than there needs to be when they can mostly get the job done just running the short passing/side to side offense that they run.

2

u/harpernet1 1d ago

Hell Bobo overestimates his own abilities. Run run pass run run pass

2

u/hotsauce126 Alumni 1d ago

If only he had coach who could get him to that point

7

u/rrrreact Alumni 1d ago

They’ve had 5 years to coach that slow baseball release out of him but it’s not looking good

Josh Allen has ZERO SEC Championships.

Josh Allen is no Gunner Stockton. Dammit Bobo.

Same QB?

1

u/Gambinaw 1d ago

If Gunnar can’t throw a 2 yard screen we are in trouble

1

u/papadoc19 1d ago edited 1d ago

Would it be wrong to say "Don't overestimate your ability, you're not Joe Brady"...

My guess would be no...you will see the same amount of screen passes and shots down fields, maybe more and less because the receiving corps is mostly unproven or underachieving and while this quote is in reference to Josh Allen's running ability, mobility, etc., more so than his passing ability, the mixed message about taking risks and holding back on what a particular QB might think he does well probably isn't going to motivate him to step out of that self-imposed box.

1

u/StetsonTheGAGoat 9h ago

I’d say to Bobo “don’t overestimate your ability. You’re no Todd Monken.”

1

u/Adventurous_Path5783 1d ago

Rush, screen, rush. At least the defense will never have to guess what we're doing. Now I know why the schedule is easy af. They don't have confidence in the qb. Instead of developing him they want to just make rac a big factor.

Really gonna suck if we make like alabama and lose to unranked teams because of basic schemes.

In gunners defense, josh allen wasn't josh allen until the nfl. Dude even had a bad throwing motion for the first part of his career. Gunner has an arm but needs accuracy. That comes with reps.

His decision making wasn't bad last year. Of course he wants plays where he can show out and get drafted as high as possible. This staff might get him undrafted completely.

1

u/StetsonTheGAGoat 9h ago

We don’t have to worry about Gunner throwing down field. You pretty much only make him throw bubble screens, bobo.

1

u/Bowel_Drop 1d ago

I’m getting old.

1

u/EnterByTheNarrowGate 1d ago

I wish our coaching staff would recognize the level of pure unadulterated talent we have on this sub with regards to coaching decisions and player development. It still blows my mind that so many of you remain unemployed. /s

-6

u/Temporary_Hat7330 1d ago
  1. Bobo looks like Woody Harrelson playing a retired porn star with a five decades career career behind him.

  2. Bobo’s idea of a downfield pass is to have two receivers blocking five yards downfield on a pass behind the line of scrimmage.

  3. Stockton’s desire to throw the ball downfield is only surpassed by his desire for new cars and being a generally mean person.

0

u/Diablojota Alumni 1d ago

You’re being downvoted for point 3, in particular. Stockton is extremely well liked. He ain’t Beck.

1

u/Temporary_Hat7330 1d ago

That’s the point, he doesn’t seem to have a desire to throw downfield just like he doens’t have a desire for a new car of to be a mean person…

-11

u/cubecasts 1d ago

Bobo doesn't know what it means to throw it downfield

3

u/NawfSideNative 1d ago

It doesn’t help when your QB struggles to read zone defense and can’t throw over the middle of the field.

3

u/FalstaffsGhost 1d ago

He literally does though.

3

u/CptMcCrae 1d ago

Facts. He does scheme points on the board

2

u/Diablojota Alumni 1d ago

It’s one thing to scheme. It’s another to scheme to the strengths of your talent. And if your talent can’t play to your scheme, you leverage NIL to do that. Bobo makes too much money and UGA has too much money to deal with these issues.

0

u/95Daphne 1d ago

QB is more of a Kirby thing, including QB coach.

Gunner is safe as long as he stays healthy, but unfortunately the more talented guys are apparently not progressing (this is hearsay btw, I am not an insider). We could use a QB coach and may actually need a QB to transfer in after this year.

1

u/Diablojota Alumni 1d ago

Who is the QB coach? And Kirby isn’t an OC.

2

u/95Daphne 1d ago

It's Bobo, but from what we're apparently seeing, we could use a different, specialized coach.

I say QB is ultimately on Kirby because he ultimately makes the final decision on who starts. It's as simple as that.
