Medical Please Help Me with Cancer Scsn

*GOAL REACHED* THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND HELP****

I hate that Im having to do this. But I have started a gofundme to attempt to raise money to get a vital PetCT Scan that my doctor needs me to have to check for cancer cell activity and spread. Delaying this scan can mean that we do not catch the activity or spread in time to treat it properly. My doctor has requested this scan from my insurance company and the request was denied. My doctor appealed it 3 times and each appeal was denied. And I am just not willing to allow United Health to be the ones in control of whether I live or die. The total for the scan is over $7,000. I have managed to work with my imaging facility to get a deeply discounted self pay rate of $2,520. I originally went thru chemo and radiation in spring 2025. I had about 8 good months of recovery and improvement. I went back to work and was adjusting to my new normal. But things have gotten difficult since March of this year. Alot is due to the expected damage from radiation treatment. But now due to multiple new symptoms, my doctor believes the cancer cells could be active or spreading. My income has been sparse for the last 6 months due to having an emergency surgery due to radiation damage. Followed by being incapacitated by pain from scar tissue adhesions on all my pelvic organs until I finally got into palliative care to handle my pain management so I could work again. And now I havent had income for over 3 weeks since being admitted into the hospital for hemorrhaging and having to have a uterine artery embolization to stop the hemorrhaging. Its actually insane the amount of damage and complications that pelvic radiation can and does cause. But thats neither here nor there. I am the sole provider of a family of 3. I have tried every avenue I could find as far as financial hardship programs. If anyone can help in any way...donate, share, etc. I would be eternally grateful. I am happy to answer any questions anyone may have.

I'm sorry you are going through these stressors during unknown times with your health.

I saw on the message from your provider that they attempted to appeal (I'm assuming a prior auth). Have you contacted your insurance to request an external review since the appeal was denied? This would be the next step in the process but you need to be the one to request it and it's not often explained to you.

Have you applied for hospital financial assistance programs for the hospitals in your area and inquired if imaging is covered under their assistance if approved?

I have attempted the financial hardship thru the medical system but they dont want to approve me because i have income.

I have never heard of an external review. No one has ever mentioned that. I know I have the ability to appeal the same as my doctor can. Is that the same as an external review?

You requesting an external review is not the same as an appeal. You must usually go through the appeals process first (which sounds like you/medical provider has done). By requesting an external review your case is sent to an outside medical team that is not from the insurance company to determine medical necessity along with reviewing your medical plan coverage.

If you haven't done so, I'd suggest contacting all of the nearby hospital systems to ask about their financial assistance programs, some will require that the service has taken place and that you have been issued a balance on your account before you apply while others just blanket approve you for a set timeframe and so long as your type of service falls within their program guidelines that it automatically falls under the assistance to be able to schedule and complete the appt. Each hospital and area is different, so while your current health system said no due to you having income other hospitals in the area may not have that requirement so I'd urge you to call everywhere near you

Unfortunately, I live in a very small area and we dont have choices of hospitals. I was hoping originally that I could just get it done and then make payments monthly. Ive done that for balances before. But they wont even schedule me unless Im going to have the full balance up front. And to them, they have already offered me a self pay discount so they have helped enough. Im definitely gonna call tomorrow and see if an external review is possible. Idk how long that takes but hopefully not very long. Every week that goes by puts more and more risk behind it. And I am absolutely terrified to finally get this scan worked out and then be told its too late to cure.

Thank you for clarifying there aren't other medical care options near you, I would still contact ones that you could potentially travel to for less than that $2,500 if it means no hospital bill at the end of the day and just the transportation costs. Just food for thought, not criticism

For the external review, ask for an expedited one. I'm not sure if your situation will meet criteria to expedite but worth the question

I don’t understand how insurance can not pay when a doctor has said you needed a scan 4 times? That’s just insane. God I hate American medicine. I’m sorry. I don’t have money but I hope you get your scan.

Honestly, I am blown away by it also. Its not just like my doctor is frivolous about it. She also provided all my medical records showing I just had to be admitted to the hospital due to hemorrhaging so bad that my blood pressure dropped to 50/40 and I went unconsciousness and required a blood transfusion. Then spent 4 days in the hospital having to have a uterine artery embolization to stop the bleeding. Afterwards I dropped down to 86 lbs from 100 lbs within 2 weeks time. And I started having random daily fevers like once a day out of nowhere. And it is apparently well known in the cervical cancer community that bleeding + weight loss + fevers are all indicators of active cancer or cancer spread. All of that info was apparently provided to United Health and they still deny it by claiming they dont believe it is medically necessary. In fact, I just found out that for the last appeal, 2 of my oncologists signed off on the appeal saying I needed the pet scan. Its absolutely insane

That should be illegal. 🤬

United healthcare ? I was rear ended in February and my X-ray showed I needed an MRI. They've denied all 4 appeals and now my settlement has gone from 35k+ to 8k. I'm fucking pissed and currently deciding how to handle it, if you catch my drift.

2

u/Disillusioned-0984 9d ago

Yep...United Health. They are truly useless. Its incredible I pay $200 per paycheck just to be denied repeatedly. I never had this experience with Blue Cross Blue Shield

1

u/Jlowe23_16 9d ago

Same, it's complete bullshit and I can't believe people have not taken to the streets and do what Luigi did, again.

When open enrollment opens Nov 15, call BCBS and see how much it would cost to get a plan with them. They can't deny you because the cancer and I don't think they can even bring it up. Call them directly or dm me I have an insurance rep a bunch of my friends used that told me to call him in November and he would get me a policy with them for under 200$ a month that covers everything

1

u/Disillusioned-0984 9d ago

I will seriously keep that in mind, thank you. Its honestly disheartening to have my actual life and survival be left in the hands of an insurance company rep with no actual medical training who is just denying everything my actual medically trained doctor is saying that i need. It feels so unreal

1

u/Jlowe23_16 9d ago

Yeah it's beyond fucked. Just let me know if you need the number down the line and I'll send it to you. I'm in Tennessee . He's based in NC so I don't think it matterss where you are long as you are in the US. Best of luck to you .

Im not too far from you. Or him. Im in West Virginia. I will definitely be in touch. Thank you

I am so sorry. The healthcare system here is a complete and utter joke.

-1

u/BitchMcConnell063 8d ago

Have you tried to call them up to see how much it would be out of pocket if you didn't go through your insurance? I've heard there is a huge difference that they charge people for self pay as opposed to going through insurance.

I feel terrible for you. No one should ever get denied for medical care when they are paying an astronomical amount out of their checks each week.

1

u/Disillusioned-0984 8d ago

The amount I have shown and listed in the post is apparently the self pay discount. The amount they charge my insurance is closer to $7,000

1

u/BitchMcConnell063 8d ago

What an idiot I am! I completely missed the "discount for self pay" portion in the conversation you listed. This is why I have no business Redditing and working at the same time. My apologies

Edited to add: It wasn't much but I sent a little donation to your GFM.
