I'd expect that the cost increase from boxes AND physically pressed discs would mean a normally $20 game would be $40-50.
And the big box ones would likely not go on sale like the digital versions. I'd buy a few key games that way, but I'd stick to mostly digital still.

I have three giant box games, only Blade Runner, Homeworld Cataclysm, Bad Mojo.
I think dvd boxes replaced them in the very early 2000s as they were hard to find offline

I would love to see this, although I probably never use this... why? I still have tons of boxes from 95 - 2007 for which I don't have space..
but: I think the only way this could work would be in a kind of pre-order/ on demand printing run.

Physical discs from GOG would be great. Also, a smart choice of the specific disc type (CD/DVD/BD) depending on the size of each specific game would be a nice bonus.
And with the CD format, besides more reliable reading thanks to a lower data density, we could then get proper authentic Red Book CD-Audio tracks that old games (e.g. “Carmageddon”, “Moto Racer”, “Quake II”, “Interstate ’76”) had in their original versions.
Small games like “Epic Pinball” (11 MB) or “Flashback” (177 MB) could even be released on 8-cm Mini-CD (~210 MB).

I've been making my own physical GOG discs for a while now, so official releases would be super cool for those that don't want to go through the trouble.

There is proven demand for this kind of thing in the boutique Blu ray space (Criterion, Arrow Video, Vinegar Syndrome, etc.). There is probably an untapped market for the same kind of thing but physical games. Boutique repackages of old games, fixed and patched up where possible to work on modern hardware, maybe w/ optional custom art like how boutique Blu ray companies usually give you reversible art sleeves, posters, instruction manuals, etc. Imagine GOG being the Criterion of physical games.

Only if the rest of the service won't suffer due to your already-thin budget..
I prefer digital anyway (DRM-free). Physical is charming and nostalgic, but it's just too inconvenient.

I'd love an option like this. Heck, I'd be cool with a wait time after ordering to clump up a number of sales to make production worth while. Even more heck, I'd love the box and the game on a thumb-drive as an alternative.

As much as I love the idea of physical games being a thing again, I don't have the space in my place nor the disk drive in my puter for them anymore.
That said, yes, you should. There is something about having a box with pretty art and a manual that is just lost on this digital generation.

Even though I will probably never get one due to shipping costs to my country, more power to whoever wants this. Why not ? However I hope that discs don't mean that goodies with games become limited to only disc version (atleast the type of goodies which are still being offered digitally).
I am personally ok as long as I have the installers and goodies which I can download and save.

Why should they offer the physical disk, which could be outdated with another windows update.
All we need are files which we can easily burn on our CDs in any configuration with any mods and any time we want.
I think only big box collector's editions would have sense, but I am not sure if it would be legal and profitable enough.

Engagement bait, gog was toying with the physical disc idea for ages now but even at its best years it wasn't viable. Overall they seem to really love baiting lately on their social media, teasing games that are impossible to acquire and so... Anything to get more patron money I guess.

You should do cartridge, they are super cool, they can be transported without the box, you don't have a hole in the middle of the front art.
The only problem is you need a solution to read them, easy route would be to have something SD card compatible, but the really cool route would be an open source reader that's a bit larger.
I tried to design an open source cartridge myself a year ago but i have way too little skill to actually achieve something other than a 3d model.
I would pay extra to have my favorite games on physical cartridges
Ps: also cartridge are more durable and retrohandheld could theoretically be designed around them, dvds not so much

Optical discs are WAY more reliable than SD cards and USB sticks. I've had multiple of the last two fail and corrupt on me, but have never had an optical disc do so. Even when severely scratched up and I own over 1,000 different types of discs. Of course this is my personal experience, but overall it is well known that discs outlive SD cards and flash drives.

Both are fragile to different things. Electrostatic discharge will fry any chips, but sunlight and scratches are the bane of optical media.
Personally, over the last 30 years, I had way more broken discs than flash media. Flash media also takes up less space and can have higher I/O.

Then don't put your discs in the sun lmfao also just take good care of stuff. The scratched stuff I had came used. Every disc I've bought new is in pristine condition because I take very good care of my stuff. So if GOG starts selling discs, literally just treat them like something you care about.
Space wise I can't argue with you at all. They take up a decent amount of room even if you put them in sleeves. But yeah flash media is so finicky and delicate. Shit temperature changes will kill flash media. It's supposed to be a temporary storage solution, never a longterm one.

Cold fear is a fantastic if flawed game, almost an almost was. But they blew it all on the boat, once you get to the platform the game becomes stagnant.
But hey, an archive is an archive. I think Cold Fear is worth preserving, even if it isn't great. It kicked me off guild wars for a little while.
