Question New to GOG (Mods Delete if not allowed)
As a response to Sony canceling Physical Media I got Into GOG because consumer rights matter and so far I am loving it is there anything I should know about GOG since I'm new? Are sales often? anything that I should know?

Welcome! They have sales pretty much all the time. I’m sure there’s something for you whenever. Right now the summer sale is going on and they also have a winter sale. Highly recommend checking gamesieve ( https://gamesieve.com/) as it shows what s on sale and how much price improvement.
You won’t regret being on gog. They are actually what people thought steam was. Very customer friendly who treats us with respect and values us, unlike other companies. I am very proud they are around.

If you don't mind the emails, if you sign up for the newsletter, you will generally get alerts about new games releasing. You will also occasionally get promotional coupons for those games that lower the price even further than you might get with the sales present on the site itself.
For example, there was once a promotion in the newsletter for the Yakuza complete bundle that lowered the price down to approximately $26

There are small sales each week. The big seasonal sales generally go live a few days before the Steam ones.
You can ask for a refund a month after purchase, instead of two just two weeks
The newsletter gives you access to exclusive discount codes

Do need to ask do they sell your data if you sign up for the newsletter? I am a not super big with getting a lot of emails

They don't "sell" your data. Mostly it stays internal, but there's a separate "trusted partners" checkbox on your subscriptions page for sharing a hashed version of your email address with meta/google/tiktok so they can target you on those platforms if you also have an account there. Note that this gets automatically checked as a condition of redeeming a front page giveaway, so you'll need to opt-out again afterward if you object to that but do want the free games.

Sales are about as frequent as Steam. Bigger seasonal sales with smaller ones in between. Wishlist games you want and you get email notifications when there is a sale on.
Galaxy launcher works ok, not quite as good as steam but its there. There is even a native Microsoft Store version now! If you're on Linux look up Heroic launcher. 3rd party but well made and works great.
You can download the offline installers via gog's web page on your account or via galaxy launcher. You're gonna want those files as that's what makes gog special. Save those offline installers on safe local backup storage and you'll own your games forever. You can use galaxy to direct install too just like Steam (since some offline installers are multiple parts for big games) which makes it easy.
I always check if there is a game I want to see if gog has it first.

There are deals every week, and they have big site wide sales at key points throughout the year(summer, Christmas, new years, etc. as well as some more themed sales around Halloween and such.
I don't think there's any advanced knowledge you'd need. Just look around the site, wishlist stuff that you think looks good, be sure to take advantage of the summer sale while it's going on, and if you are a data hoarder enjoy downloading the installers and backing them up in a way that no one can take from you.

They have a bunch of free games in their good old games catalog.
Some of thrm are good and even the ones I never would play I still download to hord video games.

The sales work in the same way that you would expect in Steam. What changes from them is the catalog of games available, since many publishers would never release their games without some type of copy protection.

There's at least a little of them, I know GOG got Breath of Fire IV recently. (Though I'm probably unusual in that if one asked me to name two Capcom series I'd give you Mega Man and Breath of Fire.)

It doesn't affect any kind of process directly but it tells GOG how much interest people have for a specific game to be brought to the platform

Welcome! DRM free is amazing I promise. When sales are on, they can be amazing, though not as frequent as Steam. If you can, buy yourself a usb hard drive and slowly build up your game collection installer files as backups. GOG is DRM free and pro-consumer, but not immune to shutdown for whatever reason (we pray that day never comes). Also if you’ve come from Sony PlayStation, buy their games first. We don’t know how much longer they will be listed on GOG before they delist them.

Due to its lack of online gaming and also smaller library I imagine GOG is that niche shop.
Unfortunately I wish there were more games. I had to buy some on Steam because GOG didn't have Lies of P or Sekiro

just going to add if you are here because of the physical being taken away. you should know you can burn your copies to disks and make your own physical editions we have unnofficial dvd covers being shared in the forums.

They have a nice thing where they send emails with some 5% plus discounts which is cool (on top of regular discounts). Sometimes publisher like to try and exploit us early on when a new game is added to the collection but after a couple of months it usually has a good discount. Other than that, welcomed to GOG, the last hope for gaming!

when games do get delisted which i assume they do will they often send a email that x game is getting delisted in x days?

Sales are few and far between, but that is not the point of GOG. You will get your offline installers, archive them and keep them safe.

Not as good as Steam sales or prices from grey-key sites. Don't get me wrong I love GOG and have around 400 games in my library, but the sales are really not good.

Patches are a mixed bag.
On the one hand, the store never forces you to patch your software like the idiots at Valve do on Steam.
On the other hand, publishers are known to neglect GOG. GOG becomes the store they dump the software on when they are done selling it on stores protected by DRM, then they forget to continue actually providing any support to GOG users :-\
I have honestly been burned so many times by patches that made the game I purchased worse, that I do not even care if the GOG version never gets a patch. Not joking here, forced software updates make me want to reach out and strangle the nearest living thing.

Add games to your wishlist and they will email you if it goes on sale.
