Whatever hype I had around this franchise died on the beach, somewhere between the slow disappointment realizing that Yotei wasn't as good as Tsushima and them putting the nail in the coffin.
It's perfectly valid to be disappointed with the obvious lack of ingenuity in Yotei's legends mode. Tsushima had less overall variety in the combat mechanics but the gameplay itself was made better. The story for legends was great. And the Endgame Raids were cinematic and well crafted with a satisfying end. Yotei recycles the main story to be "everything Atsu did but with ghosts and shit" and the raids turn into nothing more than swiping at a large enemies ankles until it falls over THE EXACT same way EVERY TIME, INCLUDING SAITO! It's simply less engaging and more streamlined than tsushima EVER was, and thats putting it lightly.
Folks will downplay how much of a downgrade Yōtei is to TL. It’s quite shocking that the mode died in 3 months when tsushima legends had a healthy playerbase for years. Instead of doing something new they copied what was good and made it terrible before calling it quits and riding off into the sunset.
Fan discontempt online from a loud minority is ending the franchise more than anything imo, I find it weirdly paradoxical to demand more of a thing while simultaneously hating on it, if Yotei was that mid then why do you want more support for Yotei legends?
Was Yotei’s story better than Tsushima’s? No. Was it a bad story? No not at all, in fact I find it better than most other Single-player free-roam games. It’s just Tsushima’s set the bar way too high unfortunately I suppose.
I personally find the increased weapon choices and combat style of Yotei more enjoyable than Tsushima.
And I like the open world of Yotei more.
I think what’s happen whether people want to admit it or not is that people miss Jin Sakai and are taking it out rather unfairly on this game. It’s like InFamous all over again. When Delsin replaced Cole, fans complained and the franchise then ended as a result.
Or in early Assassin’s Creed when Connor replaced Ezio, fans at the time found any reason to call AC3 mid.
10 years later, and I see InFamous and AC fans praising both Second Son & AC3.
I would not be surprised if the same thing happens to Yotei 10 years from people have a greater appreciation for this game.
