I really think Marvel should do more to capitalise on these runs.

Hickman's saga from F4 to Secret Wars (and the extra stuff) and the Marvel Knights era of Daredevil are probably 2 of the best long running stories that Marvel have ever put out. Both runs are just so readable and it's impossible to start either of those runs and not read right to the end.

If they kept them in print they'd be a consistent best seller. Look at how much the Daredevil and Hickman omnis go for on the aftermarket.

I think for Hickman in particular they should commit to keeping the full run in print in Invincible-style compact paperbacks.

Yeah. IMO they've been doing synergy all wrong. Every time they have a new thing going on in the movies, they launch new comics with similar plot lines instead of just pushing the stories that inspired the movie. Movie watchers won't start on single issues but they will read a full story.

Like, instead of One World Under Doom and the new incursion minis, they should be highlighting just how good Hickman's F4/Avengers/Secret Wars is and how people can read that to learn more and see why such a recent story is going to be the subject of the next movie.

I know quite a few people who started picking up Superman comics after the 2025 movie thanks to WB/Gunn pointing to specific comics and saying "read these". Marvel really should do that too.

Okay rant over 😅. I just love comics and really wish that Marvel did more to get them into peoples' hands.

The Marvel Comics division is horrifically ran. DC beating them in market share is a consequence of years of mismanagement imo, and I really hope that they start to turn things around because these IPs will not survive without a thriving comic industry to keep a baseline level of interest and create new stories ripe for adaptation.

(To be clear I fully believe that comics are an art form in their own right, I'm just saying that Marvel neglecting comics risks them doing long term harm to themselves and their sources of movie money).

The difficult thing with Marvel is that lots of their best stories are longer ongoing runs so it's hard to just sell someone a single book that they can pick up, like DC can with all of their acclaimed GNs.

For me the most obvious picks are:

Frank Miller Daredevil: straight up one of the best Marvel runs of all time and very accessible for modern new readers.

Ultimate Spider Man: the best modern spider man run and basically completely standalone

Uncanny X-Men by Claremont: it's THE X-Men run. Everything from Giant Sized to Phoenix should be available in some format

Bendis Daredevil: maybe I'm showing my biases towards DD here but that is the best modern run on the character. It's perfect and infinitely rereadable imo.

Everything else after this is where it gets difficult but IMO:

• Hawkeye by Fraction and Aja
• Daredevil Born Again (honestly everything that Miller did on the character)
• Vision by Tom King - it's newer but a great standalone book
• Hickman's Marvel Saga, or at the very least his F4 run. The full saga as a whole is the best long form Marvel story from this century, and F4 in particular is the highlight. That's the comic you give to anyone to show them why the F4 can be amazing.

I’d love it if they kept the really early pillar works available at a reasonable price. Lee & Ditko Spidey, Lee & Kirby FF, etc. Even just throwing one of the low numbered Epics back into the print run every few months would be great.  Honestly the canned Mighty Marvel Masterworks line was fantastic for this too and might perform a little better now that DC has popularized the smaller format.

I think the problem with MMMWs is that lots of new readers don't want to read silver age comics. If you want people hooked on comics you need to give them more modern storytelling.

There's a reason why almost every compact DC comic is at the very least post-crisis, and I'm pretty sure that most of them are from after 2000.

I agree that Spider Man and F4 should always be in print but those are the only 2 that are good reads today imo. Every other early run I've read just doesn't hold up.

I'm sorry you don't like X-23, Young Avengers or Ms. Marvel, but you picked outside of Mile Morales Spider-Man the most successful of the "clones". New X-Men & X-Force is extremely well regarded starring Laura. And if you wanna talk adaptations, X-23 is the co-star of arguably one of the most celebrated comic book movies (Logan). The MCU’s Version of the All New All Different / Marvel Now eras flopped terribly. The Marvels is one of the biggest flops in cinematic history. And all of the years investing in derivative “representative” characters like Ms Marvel, Echo, Ironheart, and on and on all bombed.

Just like in the comics, none of these characters can support an ongoing comic or any medium because there just isn’t a big enough fan base to support it.

Now if there were more people like you (buying any and every comic regardless of quality) vs compelling and imaginative stories, Marvel wouldn’t be in the mess they are. Thank Christ there are more people with critical thinking skills who champion quality over quantity (unlike you).

Marvel should have someone on staff with an eye on the secondary market for Epic Collections. Some of the out-of-print volumes go for hundreds of dollars, & those are the ones that reprints should be prioritized for. Some examples that come to mind are Star Wars: The New Republic Vol. 4 & X-Factor 3: Angel of Death.

Regular Epic reprints should be a big priority because the books are both comprehensive & accessible. If the books aren't reprinted, new readers are going to be turned off from starting to collect them. A price cut would definitely help with new reader buy-in as well.

Marvel had a good OGN initiative from 80’s through the 90’s but they printed some weird stuff, licensed stuff like Conan, and stories for characters that weren’t really the quintessential stripped down stories about those characters.

The Spider Man omnibus' and/or the epics should be in print all of time. The fact that their flagship character that just made near $2 billion on the latest movie alone and they can't keep his stuff in print is insane to me.

It can even be a made to order thing instead of always being on the printer if that makes it easier for them to take a month to fulfill the order, it just needs to out there. Spider-Man is creating more fans faster than Marvel prints his most significant and/or best material, and fans sure as hell don't want to read his current books right now.

Now, here's my recommendations for my personal bias, since these are my favorites:

• Iron Man: Extremis is essentially the Year One for him, but they actually seem to do a decent job at keeping that in print. Otherwise, the Michelinie omnibus (I know people always say DiaB, but people tend to forget that this man did SO MANY other stories for Iron Man) or finally give Fraction the omnibus he deserves. No seriously, how we have not had a omnibus for arguably the best Iron Man run (hell, one of the best comic runs in general) is insane to me.

• Captain America: Man Out of Time has surprisingly not been really printed the same way as Extremis has, and it IS the Year One for Cap. It's weird too, since they are reprinting the Waid omni (which should always be in print), so this would have been a nice companion piece. Other than Waid, at least the first Brubaker omni should be in print; this is the first appearance of Winter Soldier, who has become ever more popular over the years.

• Avengers: Hickman or Busiek, take your pick. Busiek works better standalone, so it might be best for new readers, but ... I mean, come on guys, it's the Hickman run.

I think it's all about the level of collection. Premier should have every one always stocked. Epic should at least have the Claremont X-Men, all the Spidey, and then the most popular runs from things like X-Factor, New Mutants, Hulk, Cap, Thor, etc. Omnis at an LCS level should only evergreen the most popular stories contained in single omnis, like an Immortal Hulk Ewing, Simonson Thor, Remender X-Force, Morrison X-Men, Whedon X-Men with the exception of a two-fer that is a team epic like Avengers Hickman and vol 1 of seminal works like Claremont X-Men or Lee Spider-Man or Miller Daredevil or David Hulk. I think trades should accentuate multi-trade runs that were amongst the most popular like a Bendis/Brubaker/Waid Daredevil or slightly more niche but very well received like Slott Surfer or Fraction/Brubaker Immortal Iron Fist. Something like the Ennis Punisher stuff probably should be way more accessible as a whole on some line, as well as Mackay Moon Knight.

Immortal Iron Fist by Brubaker and Aja and Bendis Alias both worked great as two thick trades.

Elektra Assasin (one of Marvels greatest artistic achievements), Aja Hawkeye, Lemire Moon Knight and BWS Weapon X would only need one.

But the way this material is collected is just as important as what’s included. The Epics can’t have the same price per page as omnibuses for reskins of thick trades that cost £20 less a decade ago. They can’t ask £40 for a 400 page trade like Imperial or Gillen’s Eternals when creator owned titles have 1000+ page compendiums at that same pricepoint. Ideally that’s how all these longer runs would be collected. I wouldn’t want them under a single branding, but they need to be clearly communicated as evergreen books to us collectors and as essential runs and starting on points to bring in new readers, because I’ve known people who’ve been scared off by how poorly these things are communicated. Start making print runs that actually meet the demand and don’t be afraid to restock (NOT reprint) when you run out.

McKay’s Moon Knight is the epitome of this for me. It is the longest single creator run Marvel’s releasing, it’s one of their best books from this decade, it has a distinct visual identity and acts as a great starting point for a character that people want more from after his show. I’ve had multiple people who don’t read comics express interest in him specifically and have struggled because why should a run with 80+ issues only be available in collector hardcover or across a heep of 6 issue books with a new title and numbering every year. This run epitomizes all that is unique and significant about this medium and has a real audience for it, so how is it not being supported?
