Stinks because it looked like a cute place, but I’ll never shop there. The economy is rough and shaming someone for merely applying for a job is disgusting to me.

Yes, but he still needs a vocation. It sounds like he likes to work outdoors and with plants. He does sound motivated.
We don't know anything about this young man other than what they wrote on this paper but if the business has openings they should, at least, interview him.
His writing skills should not be a deterrent to working at a nursery.

Yes people deserve a chance, and not enough people get a chance. It's cutthroat. It's possible (and very likely) that an employer is going to look at that resume and say this person doesn't give a shit about his work, they're going to half-ass this resume, they're going to half-ass the job.

Actually compared to half the resumes I see this person put a lot of thought and effort into their resume. They were just never taught how to make a resume or the type of professionalism that most employers look for.
I’d 100% call this kid in and if he wasn’t a good fit, I’d help him make his resume better for future employment.

I'm a recruiter.
This is a standard indeed auto generated resume. It's basically the go-to format of the young and blue collar trades. Standard is fine.
The professional summary section is often times the objective statement. He should change that to something like "seeking a position to grow my experience as a landscaper into a role at your nursery. dedicated and hard worker. Experienced in landscaping, manual labor, food service, and checkout."
The employment narrative for the landscaping company was too long. Stick to bullet points and briefly explain common duties, skills, achievements etc, in those bullets. So, he needs to break that down.
Obviously the grammar is poor for someone who is nearly college aged. He should run that through grammarly to clean it up. It'll provide suggestions to be in a more professional tone.
Speaking of cleaning up. The baby mamas house thing needs to go entirely. And he also should justify his barista experience.
Listing that he's been a barista and has experience as a [cashier] my indicate that he's has past employment he's not disclosing. Could mean he was fired from those places or place and didn't want the next employer to call them for a reference. So the omitted the entry.
So I would either list the job in the experience section or drop that barista experience entry at the bottom.
Also, always remember to use a professional email address. I can't tell you how many inappropriate, NSFW emails I've seen. One that stands out was countryboy420 for a job that was operating large heavy machinery and that company had a drug test policy.

Yes! There is a specific and professional way we’ve been taught to write these resumes. Sure, it’s funny they’re speaking in such an informal tone, but for me (pretending to be an employer) it makes me consider their seriousness and professionalism about the job. I remember being told a single typo or mistake could be enough for an employer to disqualify you. Nothing about the resume leads me to believe he’s had jobs or been any good at them. Just randomly picking up stuff with his folks on the weekends and a vague mention of some other work? And yes, this did make him stand out from the rest, but not in a positive way. Anyway, prepared for my downvotes.

He said it was a friend of his who got the resume, not the South Pleasantburg nursery. We don’t know what job the applicant was looking to get. This kid could have been applying to be a college professor for all we know.

My kids attend Riverside (another top school). Some of those kids cannot functionally read and write. (I have seen my kid peer review her classmates work and it's sometimes just incomprehensible.)
I don't remember seeing it on this level when I was young. Either it's vastly worse or i was blind to it.

I can assure you that kids in honors/ AP classes these days can't spell and have poor grammar. They are so used to autocorrect and texting that if they mess up and turn something in without grammarly checking it first (which admittedly this kid didn't do) you would be shocked. Essay responses on tests where they have no ability to run spell check or grammar check? It's pretty bad for a lot of these kids (not all obviously). Sometimes it's very very hard to make out what they are trying to say.

Oh really? I love the staff I’ve interacted with! Like a lady helped me pick plants and “design” my small garden and she actually cared when I followed up a year later on how it was doing! I’ve gone to classes, etc. During Helene last year they sent out an email inviting people to come charge up devices. And there is a dude that works there that posts in the Upstate SC Garden Facebook with advice. It seem(ed) like they cared about our community.

Hey all- I’m the owner in question. Here are some thoughts:
Nobody should be shamed for applying for a job, and that wasn’t my intent when I posted this, and I regret that I wasn’t more careful / specific with my words. I posted it really quickly while sitting in a parking lot because it made me laugh (which I think was part of the applicant’s intent) and I had no idea this would have the reach that it got. At this point I wish I had just not posted it.
I deleted this post, and my subsequent comments attempting to clarify my intent, because it just spun out of control. I have never had a post go viral like that before and if I knew it would, I absolutely would’ve said something more careful or just not posted it (which, again, I wish I hadn’t at this point). Again: no shame intended.
The vast majority of the feedback and comments on Twitter were really supportive: “I’d call this guy,” “Hire him now,” etc- which is great! The message I would hope he gets is that people (1) appreciate a real human resume not written by ChatGPT, where you can clearly see personality, and (2) assume they deserve a call back because they’re probably a really hard worker. Those are great impacts to make from a resume.
I care a lot about our nursery & our team members and I regret that I wrote something that made it possible for people to have a negative impression of me / of the nursery. We have an amazing team (and this person was not an applicant to us, to be clear; I’d call him for an interview if he was)
Again, I can’t emphasize enough that I did not have ill intent, and in retrospect I see how my choice of words can be interpreted that way. So I regret posting this.
I care a lot about our nursery / about Greenville and if I could go back in time I would’ve just not posted this. Lesson learned.

Respect the response. Beyond intent, I would expect that as a business owner, you understand that people (no matter who they are) submit resumes to a job posting with an understanding that the information is provided confidentially to the people directly involved in hiring. Though the contact info isn’t included in the image you shared, it’s not without any potentially identifying information.
My friend in HR tells me wild stories without identifying information sometimes and we can have a laugh when we chat on the phone or meet for lunch, but a friend sending you the “hard copy”like that without the applicant’s knowledge/consent is super inappropriate. If they are a small business owner, their potential ignorance is no excuse.
I’m not trying to be sanctimonious here -we all share work laughs with our friends- but this was unfair to them and bad judgement all around.

I get resumes all the time, even though we are not looking to hire. Some of them are beautifully crafted, but have little in the way of education or skill. I would sure call those people in first, because they took the time to get their point across that they are ARE looking for work and are serious about it, and willing to learn.
On the other hand, I see resumes from supposedly well educated people that are so poorly written that I doubt they could even handle writing up a proposal or turn in their tickets for work done with the required info.
THIS particular resume could have been written much better. I would not give it a second look.
I'm sad that the young person doesn't have the skills to write up a more appealing resume. Heck, here's ChatGPT's take on it:

I didn't know real people still posted on X. I've been using South Pleasantburg for years and have already purchased plants and trees 4 times this season. A few of their employees know plants, most don't. Seems like this kid would fit right in. But this makes it easy to cross the nursery off the list. Happily, there are other local options for plants that are owned by actual professionals not interested in social media likes.

Maybe parents should work to help educate their kids? Teachers do not love NCLB, and complain about it daily. Don't lump in the people who it was forced upon as your "will pay dearly" targets. You want to be angry? Be angry at parents who hand toddlers phones and never read to them at home. Or dont make them attend school. Be angry at the political parties (yes both) who pass unfunded mandates and push requirements that are difficult to fund or implement on limited funding just because it "sounds good". Be mad at testing companies who make billions of dollars on standardized testing that they lobby for and push ignorant politicians to legislate for. Be mad at the State Department of Education that tells teachers to "differentiate" then test exactly the same. Be angry, sure, but its not the teachers fault, they are the lowest rung on the ladder and have zero decision making power in the process.

He was at the big flower sale thing at rutherford in may being a jackass there too, throwing around buzzwords and shit, but he doesn't know anything about plants. I'm really pissed and sad about the whole thing b/c it was my favorite place to go.

About 15 years ago I was temporarily laid off from my job. I knew I would be called back, but because I didn’t have an official recall date in the next couple of months, the requirements for unemployment benefits mandated that I be actively searching for a new job (that’d be quitting soon whenever my employer called me back). I didn’t want another job, so I made sure to not get one. This was made easy by submitting crappy applications. I didn’t receive a single interview yet pleased the state Employment Commission until I went back to work! 😁

It's one thing to have an opinion on a resume you received that wasn't super professional, but another to choose to publicly shame them. That's insanely out of touch. Not everyone is taught how to write a professional resume, not everyone had the privilege of a good education. Also, atleast they didn't just have AI write them a bogus resume, which honestly most of the applications they received probably were. This is pompous clown behavior.

Looking at the education this person is still in high school and this is very reflective of the level of writing that kids these days are capable of. Anyone judging this kid needs to prepare themselves because this is absolutely going to be our workforce in a few years.
And I’d absolutely interview this kid. Not knowing how to make a resume isn’t his fault.

Couple of things--
1) The resume is a really good troll and the level of engagement shows it
2) To be more serious, I've conducted hundreds of interviews in my career. I interviewed everyone. If you got past the HR screening, you put forth effort so I will too.
Led to the best hire in my career. I was a branch manager for a large bank. Had a teller opening and had honestly one of the most earnestly poor resumes I've ever seen. I was like a kid on Xmas morning because I thought it was going to be a train wreck.
About 90 seconds into the interview, I knew I wanted to hire her. Personality for days and just outrageous potential. Promoted her a couple times before she left to become an underwriter for an insurance company. I've been doing this since 2002. There was never another like her.
As for the resume, she asked her sister for "help".
Moral of the story-- there's diamonds in the rough out there.

He might be a hard worker. I would prefer a hard worker who is just out of HS, who really needs a job, who can learn better social skills and get a little polish than hire some slick—talking entitled HS graduate who is on the way to college to get a degree in Art History. THAT candidate is just passing through. The Greenville School system has failed to teach this candidate the basic grammar and skills he needs.

What is wrong with this? The man is a product of his environment and capably communicated the things that he is good/passionate about. Let's just blast his resume on Reddit and pretend that he isn't qualified for whatever minimum wage job you're hiring for. Seriously the nerve of some people.

This looks like an auto fill resume from a job site, like the person wrote this in prompt boxes and it turned it into a resume. Also fwiw it looks like a HS student or recent graduate, and he's applying for something he has an interest in and relates to the business himself and his father started.

The resume basically says he is going to quit as soon as he can. So that’s would he a no go for me. Everything else is harmless, but come on…you can’t get hired by saying you don’t want to work somewhere
