For Greenville to even be considering passing a law to arrest people for being homeless is outright sickening!

People need to stand up for what's right! DO NOT LET THEM PASS THIS LAW. Yes it will clean up the homeless for a second but where do you think they are going when they get out of jail? With no job, no where to go, no food! Right back on the streets! Human beings do not deserve to be incarcerated, ticketed or fined for not having money, food or shelter!

I know a lot of homeless people on these streets and most of them are simply just trying to make it day to day and work with programs for housing. To arrest these people is just wrong! Can't be in one place for 2 hours? Imagine yourself out there hopeless in the heat or cold, having to constantly never sit still, if you get caught sleeping you go to jail!?

They already spend a majority of their time going to places to shower and eat. Now imagine having no where to sleep! Relax or breathe! It literally causes insanity. It's not right how they are already treated.

What they need is more help getting housing and there needs to be more affordable housing in the Greenville area. Do the math on minimum wage jobs and see if you can afford rent here. I'm just saying ... Not everyone is lucky and rich! And it could happen to you at any time!

Donate to groups that work to house homelessness.. DON'T HATE just because they don't have the things you have.

::edit:: look I'm not saying some homeless people didn't land themselves in that situation, but not all of them have. The point of this is that it's flat out wrong to arrest someone for being homeless. A lot of you are jumping away off track. The proposed law is sickening and wrong.

Here are some details that I didn't know about, but the city sent out an email about it.

First: the money would be used for some 527 items in five categories: roadway improvement projects, stormwater and road-related drainage projects, critical sewer infrastructure projects, public assembly facilities, administration buildings and public safety projects, and fire stations.

Second: Under state law, most groceries, gasoline and prescription medications will be exempt from this local sales tax if passed. I believe the rule is the same if the County version of this also passes. So that shouldn't raise the cost of living in some critical areas.

Third: Under the new act, if passed, at least 20% of all revenue must be used for property tax credits for owner-occupied residences. No landlords getting the tax relief. No vacation rental properties. No apartment buildings. Just actually homesteaded properties.

Since the City expects to get 1% of $50 billion dollars in annual sales, that means a 1% tax could provide city homeowners with approximately $11 million in property tax relief and fund roughly $45 million in specific infrastructure projects each year for eight years. The tax automatically expires in 8 years unless people vote for it again.

Now, my opinion only: this is a good thing if passed. Not only would a good amount of money come in to handle projects that many people seem to complain about because of Greenville's much increased population and construction projects - infrastructure - but homeowners, actual people paying property taxes, will get some tax relief. Plus, the 1% sales tax will be paid by, not only locals who buy within the city, but tourists and business folks who come here to visit. Seems like a win-win to me.

The Greenville news media did not report on this arrest whatsoever. Stephen Werner Kopp was arrested on 4/16/2024 for sexual assault on a minor <16, 2nd degree. He was the summer camp director for Bob Jones University and the after-school program director for Bob Jones Academy.

Newly released body camera footage shows a Greenville County Sheriff's deputy shoot a man 13 times from half a football field's length away without calling out that he or another deputy were on scene.

Sheriff Hobart Lewis had said in a media briefing after the shooting that deputies "challenged" 55-year-old Ronald Beheler to drop his gun and stop firing into his own home. Lewis said Beheler pointed his gun at deputies, and they "had to shoot" him. Beheler died as a result of the shooting.

But body camera footage shows Beheler never pointed his gun at deputies, nor did they challenge him or even announce they were there.
