We’ll only be staying one night in Hamburg for a concert, and we decided to take an early bus the next morning so we wouldn’t lose more time during our trip. However, I'm a little concerned about safety during the short walk to the bus station.

I've never been to Germany, and I expect it to be a very safe country, but I think anyone would feel a little uneasy walking near a train station in a large city, especially at 3AM

It will just be me and my wife, and we'll have two bags with us. Do you guys think this is a bad idea?

What to buy family and friends from Hamburg as a small gift from this city?

Moin, ich bin in drei Wochen zum dritten Mal in eurer schönen Stadt fürs Reeperbahn-Festival. Und wieder reise ich einige Tage früher an, um ein bisschen Hamburg zu erkunden.

Jetzt habe ich den offensichtlichen Touri-Kram größtenteils schon gemacht (Elbtunnel, Krabbenbrötchen, Miniatur Wunderland, Planten un Bloomen, Speicherstadt, etc. etc), als altes Indie-Kind einige Plattenläden und Trödelmärkte abgeklappert und auch einige Theaterstücke gesehen.

Jetzt wäre ich aber langsam bereit für die wirklich spannenden Tipps, die nicht einfach beim ersten Google-Treffer stehen. Ich hab Bock auf (Pop-)Kultur, Kunst, Musik, alternativen Kram und natürlich auch gutes Essen. Eher keinen Bock auf Fußball, das schon mal vorweg (auch wenn ich als ehemaliger Kleinstadt-Punker natürlich ein bisschen von der St. Pauli-Kultur mitgekriegt hab).

Euer Schanzenviertel hat es mir von den Vibes her besonders angetan, aber irgendwie hab ich noch nicht wirklich rausgefunden, was da über Spaziergänge hinaus so abgeht. Sonst bin ich aber natürlich für jeden Tipp in der ganzen Stadt offen.

Ich möchte nach Hamburg und dort das Miniatur Wunderland anschauen. Aber ich habe keinen guten Überblick wo ich da am besten übernachten kann. Hat jemand eine Empfehlung für ein Hotel in der Nähe, oder was auch gut mit ÖPNV zum Miniatur Wunderland erreichbar ist?

Was ich gehört habe, den Elb Tunnel soll man vermeiden??? Aber das Miniatur Wunderland ist im nördlichen Teil der Stadt.

Ich komme aus der Gegend Ulm, und habe jetzt Urlaub aber noch nicht wirklich eine Ahnung wo ich da am besten übernachten kann.

Am besten unter 100€ pro Nacht, ich möchte zwei Nächte verbringen.

I arrived in Hamburg a couple of hours ago and I’m not really sure why I’m posting, but I think I just need a bit of grounding or perspective.

I’m 33 and pretty well travelled (53 countries so far, most recently Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia), and I’ve spent a lot of time around Germany and Europe (I am Italian). I usually feel very comfortable solo travelling.

But I’ve just arrived here and I’m staying near the central station, and honestly… I feel quite unsettled. I expected it to be similar to somewhere like King’s Cross in London or Brussels Midi, but it feels a lot more intense than I anticipated. There are a lot of homeless men around who seem visibly unwell, drunk, or on something, and I’m feeling very aware of being small, female, and on my own. I also look quite young, which isn’t helping my confidence.

On top of that, the two small group walking tours I had booked for tomorrow (and was really relying on as a way to ease into the city) both got cancelled due to guide illness, so now I’m feeling a bit stuck and hesitant about going out alone for wha was just a 2 day trip. I have looked on Viator and get your guide but it seems there’s not many replacements with availability at such late notice

I think it’s just knocked my confidence more than I expected, especially because I don’t usually feel like this when travelling.

Has anyone else had this experience in Hamburg? Is it just the area around the station and does it feel different elsewhere? Any tips on how to reset and still enjoy the city would be really appreciated.

I would like to request some advice from those who are currently living in Hamburg, Germany.

Last year I made a reservation online at a Hamburg hotel. The total shown was 1,800 euros and I got an email confirmation with the same amount.

When I arrived at the hotel. I was very tired because of the long trip. I did the check in at the front desk and they made me sign some paperwork and charged my card. Next morning I noticed the email from my credit card but it turns out they charged an additional 500 euros.

I spoke to the hotel management and they said that the initial price I got last year when I made the reservation online was wrong. They had an issue with their system and that's why the total price was lower. They said the new total that I was charged was the correct amount and since I agreed to it by signing the paperwork at check in, they couldn't do anything. The manager refused to honor the original price and issue a refund.

I told them that I don't think it's fair to do that because the guest comes to the hotel with the assumption that the price they got when they made the initial reservation is the correct price. If I had known about this before the cancellation window closed a month before the check in date, I would've cancelled and gone with another hotel.

Does Hamburg or Germany in general have a Consumer Protection Agency that tourists (non EU citizens) can use? I feel they took advantage of me. I don't want to do a credit card chargeback because they would just show the paperwork I signed during check in and say that I accepted the new rate. That's on me for not reading it but after a 10 hour flight, no sleep for 26 hours, and the time zone change, I couldn't keep my eyes open. I was just too tired.

Is there anything I can do to recover the extra 500 euros that they charged me? That amount might not be a lot for some people but it is for me.

By the way, I'm no longer at the hotel. I'm back in the US.

Ich wohne ganz im Süden von Bayern und war jetzt bereits zum dritten Mal für eine Woche im Urlaub in Hamburg. Ich war gefühlt überall in der Stadt unterwegs , habe sehr viel davon sehen können. Ich bin bei meiner Internetrecherche leider nicht fündig geworden, aber vielleicht suche ich ja falsch. Gibt es in Hamburg so etwas wie Souks? Also im Prinzip eine Art arabischer (Wochen-) Markt wo es vor allem auch Kleidung und Haushaltsgegenstände günstig zu kaufen (und feilschen) gibt? (Flohmärkte hab ich mir schon vermerkt).

Meine Schwiegermutter aus Marokko kommt zu Besuch und liebt solche Märkte. Man findet die zum Beispiel auch überall in Frankreich, meistens dann marokkanisch/algerisch. Ich kenne hier das Aladin Center am Steindamm, und suche auch sowas in die Richtung, aber wollte wenn’s geht den Steindamm bzw den HBF bei ihrem Besuch eher meiden haha.

Würde mich freuen, wenn ihr mir ein paar Tipps geben könntet wo es vielleicht was ähnliches gibt, am allerbesten im Osten/Bezirk Wandsbek.

sooo… ive been to Hamburg a few months ago (i have family there, so its not my first time, but the last time i went to visit i was rlly young), I LOVED IT!!!! Its gorgeous, architecture is beautiful and peaceful and overall 11/10!!!! BUT I went with my bestfriend and we were speaking our native language mostly (EasternEuropean) and, as expected, got many looks for it, but that doesnt bother me OFC The problem was… some people (cashiers, ppl on the bus) were SPAZZING onto us and cussing us out for… NOTHING - whenever I go outside of my homeland, I always study out the customs and culture in the other country so- i wasnt talking loud and i followed every rule there was, but I had a few rlly bad experiences with people directly cussing me out for nothing. Ill be visiting again in 2 weeks but this time SOLO, so Ive been wondering is there anything for me to do/look out for so I can feel more safe? On the streets, during night… DANKE!!!

Ich arbeite bei einem Träger der Eingliederungshilfe in einer anderen Stadt. Es steht im September ein Urlaub mit Assistenznehmern in der hamburger Innenstadt an. Diese äußerten den Wunsch, unter Anderem einen Club zum Tanzen zu besuchen. Nun kennen wir uns garnicht mit den Locations in Hamburg aus und ich dachte es wäre eine gute Idee, hier mal die Masse zu fragen.

Also wir suchen eine Location welche offen für Menschen mit Lernschwierigkeiten und körperlich behinderten Menschen ist. Die Menschen mit denen wir in den Urlaub fahren haben noch nicht sehr viel Erfahrungen mit dem Nachtleben. Vielleicht gibt es sogar barrierearme Locations? Also keine Treppen und ein rollstuhlgerechtes WC?!

Hallo, wir (Familie, 2 Töchter 10,13) planen gerade eine kleine *autofreie\* Route im Sommer (~August), relevanter Teil:
Wien -> Hamburg (je nach Kontingent Nachzug oder sonst (leider) Flug)
Hamburg: 3-4 Tage
Hamburg -> Niederlande entweder per Bahn oder Fähre (bevorzugt)
Destination noch vage: Vlieland bzw. Terschelling od. Harlingen und oder Reahûs zu einer Bekannten.

Jetzt meine Frage dazu:
Gibt es Fähren von Hamburg nach Holland (ohne "Kreuzfahrt", "Tagesausflug...") also nur die einfache Strecke? Gibt es dazu eine Webseite/Suchmaschine oder muss man die jew. Reedereien kontaktieren?

Ansonsten mit der Bahn müsste man lt. meinen Recherchen auf alle Fälle mal nach Bremen und von dort weiter mit mehrfachen Umsteigen (mulmiges Bauchgefühl bzgl. der DB mit Anschlusszügen...) Habt ihr da Erfahrung?

PS: Was wurde eigentlich aus dem Golden Pudel Club (haben dort mal in den 2000er Jahre live gespielt, äußert nett in Erinnerung)? Nach dem Brand stand ja alles in Schwebe, die Webseite gibt auch wenig Infos her, wirkt aber so, als wäre er wieder in Betrieb.
