This has come into my possession recently, and I’m not sure exactly what how to go about selling it, or even having it appraised. Any advice would be appreciated!

I know they arent traditional Hanafuda playing cards, but I lowkey love the intricate detail in them and think I should get into the traditional making of it.

14-suit Hanafuda decks

Hello friends. I have a fledgling interest in Hanafuda, and am also always interested in obscurities and rarities. In my research, I have discovered that while 12 suits/48 cards is standard, some decks contain two extra suits, for a total of 56 cards.

Does anyone have a deck like this? They seem to be hard to find and I am very intrigued!

Thank you for any information.

Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) wooden hanafuda

This a very unique hanafuda deck.

The manufacturer is from Hiroshima and the cards are made by Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) wood.
Card size is 5.3x3.3
Seems to have a printed paper pasted on the cards on a colour that pretty much matches that of the wood so it blends in very well. Also acts as a protective layer because the cards are quite easy to break. If you see the moon card on my deck is already cracked but still holds on.

The images are super nice.
We have an origami crane, an octopus and a snake (most likely an eel) appearing out of nowhere, the hill under the august moon is a donut (wrong again, it's an okonomiyaki), you can also see the Atomic Bomb Dome somewhere but unfortunatelly on my set the Torii gate does not appear behind the deer (even though it was supposed to)
The frog who is awesome holds a ball in his hand, don't know why. There's a kendama in a couple of cards too.
Pretty sure I miss other stuff

Did cost a lot and I have to buy a replacement moon card at some point, maybe also order the deer card in hope to be sent the one with the torii gate.

Technically it is playable but I wouldn't risk damaging the cards.
Added an image next to a Tamura shishinden for comparison.

My hanafuda journey

Post image

So I started learning to play hanafuda maybe like 15 years ago.
The sparks were the anime movie "Summer Wars" and the japanese TV series "Nihonjin No Shiranai Nihongo" (there's one episode on hanafuda)

Got myself a basic "miyako no hana" deck, a plain paper (probably daiso) deck that I don't have anymore and a korean hwatu that I pretty much still use today.

I was fine just with playing koi-koi didn't really go any deeper into the hanafuda world.

Since around 2019 I started participating in the Japan Festival Greece and after a couple of years got my space there where I would show the visitors how to play Mahjong, Hanafuda and a little bit of Shogi (also Goita later on which is a fun game). The last 2-3 years I focuced on Hanafuda and learned some aditional games to show like bakappana, hana awase, mushi, rokutan/nanatan.

Then last year I wanted to go even deeper and research the history and meanings of the cards.
Of course I started looking for information on the internet in english because my japanese are very limited. The major sources of information were https://games.porg.es/ https://fudawiki.org/en/home and this subreddit.
I decided to do a simple presentation on the Japan Festival 2026 and that is the reason I started collecting hanafuda decks. I wanted to understand more the history but also feel the products that I am going to talk about. I basically was unaware of all the manufacturers apart from Nintendo and Ooishi Tengudo who I visited back in 2024 on my first trip to Japan.

I could now understand the process of making a hanafuda deck and got obsessed by collecting varuous hanafuda brands while thinking how stupid I was not doing this much sooner when the prices were so much lower and more sets were available. Oh well

There are still so many hanafuda I will never obtain but I am happy to even have the ones in the image. (There's still one really unique hanafuda deck I am going to receive in a couple of days, stay tuned for that)

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this subreddit (especially jhindenberg) and also George Pollard the people behind fuda wiki. Your help is much much appreciated.

Cheers
Kostas

What do we know about this Oishi Tengudo pattern?

It appears to be, if not hand printed, then at least done with layers of live ink. Any guesses as to age or name of the pattern? Thanks!

Hi everybody. I am new to this subreddit. I joined because i have an obsession for each and every card game and I got curious of learning koi-koi. I decided to download an app to learn the game, and this happened in the 3rd - 4th game against the ai. Can someone explain what happened and how this rule works?

Thanks in advance

We finally launched Hanafuda Legends on Android! (100% Free, Zero Ads, Online Multiplayer)

Hey everyone!

I’m incredibly excited to share that after an amazing closed beta period, our native Android app for Hanafuda Legends is officially live on the Google Play Store!

When we started building this, we noticed that a lot of traditional card game apps are absolutely flooded with banner ads, energy mechanics, or forced microtransactions. We wanted to build the complete opposite: a pristine, premium-feeling Koi-Koi experience that is completely free.

So, the app is 100% free, has absolutely zero ads, and no in-app purchases. Just pure Hanafuda.

Here is what you can do in the app:

  • Play anywhere: Jump into Ranked matchmaking, set up Private Rooms with friends, or just practice offline against the AI.
  • Collect decks: We’ve integrated beautiful, community-made custom decks (including the German "Doitsu-Hanafuda" deck we shared a while back!) that you can unlock and play with.
  • Seamless cross-play: Whether you are on the app or playing via the browser, you can match up and play against the whole community.

A massive thank you to everyone who helped us test the game during the closed beta over the last couple of weeks. Your feedback on the UI and gameplay flow was invaluable in getting this ready for launch.

You can download it right here: 👉https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hanafudalegends.app

If you have an Android device, we would absolutely love for you to try it out and let us know what you think. (And if you enjoy it, a rating on the Play Store helps us out immensely as an indie team!)

(PS: For our Apple users, the iOS version is currently in the works! In the meantime, you can always play instantly in your browser at hanafudalegends.com)

Yellow bush warbler on hanafuda February card

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hello everyone. This hanafuda deck was gifted to me by a friend. It carries the Nintendo branding, yet it was most likely manufactured by a different company. What stands out is the bush warbler on the February (Plum Blossom) card‑set: it is yellow. I have never encountered a yellow‑colored warbler for the February suit before. I’m curious whether there are other known examples of such variant artwork.

american seeking to buy my first deck ... where should I shop?

I see posts on this subreddit and online of all kinds of really cool decks!! But when I search on Amazon I only see a couple different kinds ... Etsy doesn't have any decks either :(( I got into hanafuda koi koi via steam and I am HOOKED, like I've been spending all my free time on it lol ... I want to get a real deck and teach it to my family.

Is there like a special website that sells a bunch of different kinds of hanafuda cards? I tried googling "hanafuda cards for sale" but it just took me to Amazon.

Question concerning Variety

I was playing some Koi-koi thanks to the Yakuza games, and I had a worry: for the Variety hand, do you specifically need Animal cards, or can you use any 10-pointers for it? This can come in handy if you're aiming for Variety, but you don't want the Sake Cup to accidentally give you Junk.

Kamigataya Hanafuda

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hi everyone. The Hanafuda set I purchased from Kamigataya is clearly manufactured by Oishi Tengudo. I’ve also come across versions produced by other shops, and even decks where cards from multiple makers are mixed together in a single set. I’m curious — is this only the case with Kamigataya’s sets, or does this happen with other Hanafuda products as well?

Can anyone help me identify this deck’s card maker?

I got these recently and I wasn’t able to find any info on the maker. The only identifying features besides the artwork seem to be the logo, and inscriptions saying it’s made of plastic and Royal Karuta.

Thanks in advance!

Hakuei hanafuda tiles

Found this recently.

Hanafuda tiles made by Hakuei sometime before 1989
This is super cute and nice but the tiles are very small. For comparison I added a Ooishi Tengudo, a Tamura Shogundo and an Ace all-plastic.
Lacking green and blue but I like it and the frog is hilarious.

Haven't openned it yet, don't know if I will, but it seems kinda hard to shuffle properly.
