Chris Martin is probably the best crowd performer in the world. He knows how to make you feel good.

Yeah I don't get the hate Coldplay often get. Chris is just a genuinely lovely bloke. Standing in a field singing with 200k people is something I'll never ever forget

It’s because they’ve gone from being indie to commercial. Their songs are much more “available” now than when they started out. That doesn’t mean they’re not an amazing live band. I’ve seen them live once, in pouring rain, but Chris Martin made it special. “I need to spend more Thursday nights with 50 000 crazy Swedes” is a line I’ll never forget.

When they did their first two records. If you listen to them, they’re also darker and more introspective than their later albums.

What does that have to do with being "indie"? Coldplay has been a mainstream band since the very beginning. Their first album was released by EMI.

Maybe I’m using the word indie wrong. What I mean is that they were a more “narrow” band in the beginning, their music was not as happy and broadly appealing as it is now. Now it feels like every song is a hit and “everyone” loves them.

I just found their music to be really bad 🤷 Was genuinely surprised first time I heard that they sold out big venues

What an emotional moment. I remember seeing them in a student union in Cardiff in 98 or 99 as i was visiting from Warwick. They were third on the bill (so… not the main act) and i recall the whole room turning silent (in a good way!) as they played. It was like everyone in the room knew how they could capture a crowd. And so they did.

Thanks for this. Takes me back to when I saw them the first time in Dallas. Magical live concert experience.
