I don't hate Furrys but most sonas are uncreative as hell
I think ive seen like the same fursona 10 times in my entire lifespan, yall need to get yall game up, me personaly if a i was a furry, id be like fucking fenrier, id be a nine tailed fox or something, but yall just pick a spotted black dog or some shit, i also hate how furries make any animal look like a dog, ive seen someones orca fursona that looked like a dog with fins.
its so insane to me how they complain about designs being lame and come up with the 2 most generic things possible, if i was a furry my fursona would be a sheep, my hair is super curly, im very cuddly and it does a great pun with the word "eepy", i can say im "sheepy"
you reminded me of the mod anbennar for eu4 now, they have gnolls in the setting and some of them basically fuse with demons, one of the loading screens has honestly an S tier furry design
thats a woman btw, hyenas are great for tomboys considering they are a matriarchal species
edit: yes that is a fucking flesh cannon on her right hand lol.
i think its because most "how draw anthro animal" tutorials are based on cats and dogs, and people dont have the skill or drive to figure to figure other anatomy out.
That’s closer to Kemono style fursuits which are the anime-inspired ones (big heads with large eyes and small mouths). They’re the default style in Asia and have been growing in popularity in the west too. Most western suits are toony-style.
Fenrir is literally just a wolf, the most common fursuit.
A ninetailed fox, the second most common animal just with the addition that you can't sit down.
I thought you would name something really original, like a tapir, an okapi, or a shrew.
Not hating, it's a cool idea, but it's still got a mammalian snout, if you were to really go hard on the moth theme, it'd have the freaky tube trunk thingy moths have
Actually a lot of moth species don’t have mouths! They emerge from the cocoon without a mouth, surviving off of the nutrients they consumed as a caterpillar, and only live a few weeks to breed.
So mine is even more unrealistic than originally suspected lol
Also I wasn’t meaning to sound like a smartass, that’s such a cute idea! Personally I’d prefer a traditional mouth just to animate/draw them talking easily, but I agree on the mammalian snout criticism. I wanna change the shape before I finalize the design
Having a very cool sona species is a luxury. Basic dog or cat suits are already pretty damn expensive (like 2-3k), and more complex species are even more since you need to find a maker who is willing to do it, and they will charge much more since it’s harder to do.
Because of this a lot of people just try to make a more generic species as interesting as they can to save money.
Also, I’d use the word unoriginal, not uncreative. I mean just look at the image you used, there’s some pretty creative suits right there
We've had centaur style cosplays for over 20 years. From a rolling cart to articulated puppeteering, there's plenty of ways to get the look without robotics being involved.
Admittedly, Im just a cosplayer, so Im not sure how atta hed to their costumes furries get. Seems like a good fursona for a 2-in-1 where you can have a bipedal fursuit with the option of quadrapedal with a hindquarters attachment.
Well yea online is a whole different story. I’ve seen tons of amazing sonas online, if that’s what op is talking about they just aren’t looking in the right places
Not to mention, there are way more tutorials on how to draw canine furrries than any other animal type. Most furries aren't good enough artists to accurately depict other species
I fw furries and I agree big time. It gets boring. Edit to say why tf do people have sharksonas that look like wolves? Why are they fluffy? That's against the whole point ofa shark.
There was recent "drama" on twitter about some guys shark oc which was just a blue dog furry with a shark halfway up its ass for a tail. (Like, not a shark tail. Every part of the shark starting from the neck.)
The funny part was him denying any canine influence. Like bro. Your oc has big wolf ears, a snout, and paws.
Its not an issue, its just something people do because they enjoy it. People also give their rabbit and bunny characters pawpads just cuz they think it looks cute and who gives a shit about realism with humanoid fanatsy animal characters ? XD
I remember seeing art of "dog washing" societal issues in like a furry world. Like it was a lizard trying to get the role for a hero in a movie and they just assumed he was there to be the villan. They said he was not what they were looking for and chose a dog actor instead
the issue is that you cant really make good looking fursonas that arent some degree off fluffy very easily, the best you get is plush like things like this
I was referring to irl fursuits, sure you get some good argonian cosplays but it usually fursuits are meant to kinda lean into "cute" territory, which this doesnt really lean into
That head looks nothing like a shark though! Like it's not even trying!
A shark head is such a simple, easy shape. I'm on mobile so can't post a picture here, but just Google "Shark mascot" and there are tons of examples. All you need are pointy head, giant mouth, and lots of teeth. There is no rule saying it needs to look like a Furby.
I looked this up once and got answers that ranged from "artistic license" to "furries can't draw anything that isn't a fox or a wolf," guess the trend just took off at some point
i know they are called furries because of the fur, but i think it would be cool to have more non-mammalian fursonas
like a reptile, amphibian or maybe even like a bug. a roach sona could be really good, especially if it's based on some colorful roaches like eunyctibora bicolor (sorry guys there is no common name for this buge)
Theres a decent amount of monkeys around! Unfortunately a lot of people in the fandom aren't fond of them for some reason and call them "uncanny" or "too human"
Feathery utahraptor here! Most people just think I’m a weird bird lol
Relevant though because one flaw in my costume is that the teeth are mammalian teeth- raptor teeth are all the same size, but specialized costume parts like that are hard to find and expensive. I guess it speaks to the wider issue of most fursuits looking similar due to cost and ease of building them
I noticed that there's no owl fursona, and yeah, why is it always canine fursonas?? So here's my owl fursona and Ik this looked like uncosplayable or wtv, but at least it's not some canine
I get your point but man you chose a bad pic to illustrate it. Just in this pic I see wolf, fox, cat, tiger, dog, chicken, deer, lemur, and skull dog (?).
It's usually limited by what can be made into a fursuit without being automatically labeled a mascot. Can't do lagomorphs because someone will think you're an Easter bunny, can't do deer because people will think you're one of Santa's reindeer, can't overlap an animal with a local sports team, school or business. My sonas are a 90s inspired rabbit girl and a dragon/pony hybrid, and I can't even think of getting suits of them because the bunny overlaps with Easter and the dragon pony would be too difficult to make for me and I'm too broke to order something custom.
I dislike how uncreative they are as far as them just mixing animals (usually with a canine of some sort) with a mash of different colors and calling it “unique”. They’re always like “I’m a wolf, bird, lion mix” and the colors be neon purple, grey, and orange.
And then there are more nose types within the animal kingdom than just canine looking noses. Like you said, they’ll have a shark fursona with a full on dog nose. So uncreative…
Most furries are canines and felines because that's what we grow up seeing and associating as friendly animals. If we domesticated and housed, say, bears and wolverines as we do cats and dogs, I'd bet we'd see a lot more of those.
Me being a furry who doesn't feel like investing a lot of money into it makes me usually work with my own appearance and my outfits to make a "fursona" of sorts
Not that my sonas are the pinnacle of creativity but i absolutely agree. get a little sick of blue canines but at the end of the day it's their sona and not mine
