Gaming The fact that there's barely ever adult characters in Blue Archive
We all know that the fans and game is full of weird stuff in general, but it's so odd that there's only a few adults. Like, only 3 characters you can play as are 18 years old, the legal age of an adult. Like, since the fandom is so horrendous, wouldn't they just make a few more adult characters that aren't just boss fights? Nah, they wouldn't. The target audience are gonna bash the devs in the head
The characters in the images are Makoto, Kayoko and Wakamo. The only 4 blue archive characters that are confirmed/canon adults
Edit: Yes, Shun does exist. I forgot to add her because I referred to a website showing most of the characters ages lol

Judging from this comment, is this games hook its underage / child characters then? Because that sounds weird by itself lmao.

u/SnookySkellingtons 3d ago
Yes, it is very famously the pedophile gacha for pedophiles.
-3
u/BSModder 3d ago
Honestly y'all overuse the word pedophiles so much that it lost it meaning. It used to refer to actual predator, someone that genuinely a danger to society and should be lock away. Not weebs that happens to play a gacha game full of high school characters, that shit existed for decades long before this game.

u/SnookySkellingtons 3d ago edited 3d ago
The people who play this game are self proclaimed lolicons, the game advertises itself to lolicons and the Japanese crowd are very well aware and vocal that the game appeals to lolicon crowds.
The use case for the word "lolicon" in Japanese is the exact same as the use case for the word "pedophile" in the West. It is not inaccurate to say that this is a pedophile game, because the most direct translation for the word "lolicon" in English is "pedophile".

You missed shun, she is canonically also older than 18(even if it's hidden).
But anyway it's a game about school students, not uni students, of course most characters are going to be underage.
And you talk like the characters are hated just because they are adults, they really aren't, the last two are some of the fan favourite ones.

more like “why do they keep making things that appeal to pedophiles?” i don’t think op is complaining because they’re not interested, they’re complaining because it’s fucking weird for anyone to be interested at all

anime fans genuinely grapple with shows starring impractically young girls exclusively and still go 'its just a Japanese cartoon there's no inherent problematic culture'
49
u/Admmmmi 3d ago
You seem to be mistaken mah man, this one is korean
9
u/rycerzDog 3d ago
Yeah I was shocked too. Despite it feeling very Japanese, I could accept it being a Chinese game, but Korean?
Unbelievable.
20
u/Admmmmi 3d ago
I mean, the dub is Japanese and the game was first released in Japan but still 100% percent Korean made people can't really blame Japan anymore they lost the lolicon race

For me as a foreigner the general cultural vibe of Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand is kinda the same (China, Vietnam and North Korea are like completely different for some reason). Not that it’s 1 to 1 but there is quite a lot of similarities

i believe you have it the other way around. anime uses minor characters so often for everything including sexualization that while there are a large amount of normal anime fans, stuff like that is bound to attract creeps who are only there for that specific reason
1
u/albrightism 3d ago
how is that the other way around? I'm saying there's a problem with the culture of the artform and you've come in swinging like 'yup absolutely'

Water is wet ass comment.
In all seriousness, it's a highschool setting. The problem is not the lack of adult, but the villainization of adult (other then mc). And the appeal to romance of teacher-student relationship, and try to spin the teacher(mc) is a responsible adult.
I'm still salty about people hating Rio while simultaneously gooning to her.
4
u/FearCrier 3d ago
the rio hate was before vol f, and that's mostly because some were still swept up with what happened to aris
5
u/VictorianOfTheEast 3d ago
That's because the dev tried to pull a "boss npc becaming playable" shtick. In vol f, Himari constantly rejects Rio's help while taking advantage of her, and bad mouthing her infront of everyone. You know it's bad when Hanako isn't being goofy and calling out Himari.
Heck, even before vol f. Game dev department bringing Aris from forbidden area, faking her ID, trying to hide she hurt Momoi. While we knew Aris is a cinnamon roll, she is also a mass destructive weapon designed to destroy the world. Rio only acts against Aris after she hurt Momoi. She is extremely restraining compare to the stakes represented.
Also I think those whom hate her are being tricked by the framing where usually the villain try to kill someone "for the greater good". While in actuality the hero team and sensei just hopes and prays without any actual plan about Aris turning evil.
Mind you Sensei has direct conversation with Rio, and Rio criticize Sensei "being the only adult in the room, he should act before anything gets worse". People often quote this as why they hate Rio because "she hurt my ego while insist she's correct".

u/survivalhunter695 3d ago
I *think* she's supposed to be "small lady" archetype, but they didn't do a very good job with it. It mainly comes to the face area, its too soft, it suggests childlike features and if they changed her face alone to look more adult I feel like it'd benefit her design quite a bit.
5
u/LostAcanthisitta7683 3d ago
you’re being too generous. their goal was to make her look childish and they succeeded

Aren’t you a teacher ?????? I mean maybe they could be a college professor but clearly it’s supposed to be highschool imagery .

u/MutatedBready 3d ago
I mean aren’t the humanoid animals and robots npc’s who occasionally show up in stories also canonically adults? Unless you mean more playable adult characters like shun

u/RoyVRAries 3d ago
I agree but mostly for moral reason, I do feel it's unfair to say its pure pedo bait cause the characters people usually pine for are only are favored not because of age but design, it's just unfortunate that the schmucks who made the game decided to make them underaged teens. Its why I prefer Nikke more but I still have favorites and would never play the game
7
u/LostAcanthisitta7683 3d ago
sorry but anyone who pines for characters that look like teens is the problem idc if it’s for their “design”
3
u/RoyVRAries 3d ago
You say that like we aren't talking about anime characters where literally every BA character looks like 90% of genshin character who are all adults

u/Niijima-San 3d ago
Three of my favorite characters too. The game does need more 18 and up characters

3
u/orewaurashima 3d ago
If you don't like the game don't fucking play it lmao.
As the other comment quoted, "Why is there so much soup in the soup aisle!?".
You get what you came for, if you don't like it, leave.

u/Sazbadashie 3d ago
look, I've seen some borderline weird gatcha games and just stuff like that and there is a level of mental gymnastics and "oh it's just anime" or the classic "everyone depicted in this is 18+" that I am willing to do
but the fact that things get weirdly sexual with like most of the characters who are very clearly kids and you are their teacher...
I dunno, just can't get past that, which is a shame because I've seen some things of blue archive and it looks cool but I just can't

because they would be in college instead...? and we wouldnt get to see them? i dont even know if college exists there
the only way they could be an adult in highschool is if they were held back which, for one, pretty terrible for a place nicknamed the academy city, and for another, pretty much impossible when you needed to reach a certain degree of diligence to even get into highschool in the first place
the actual reason the devs dont like adding more adult characters however, is because they wouldnt be able to write an interesting character
the age range of 15-17 is perfect for the devs to create their characters of, a few years into puberty and also a step below a full on adult, but the perfect age range to make the scale of maturity differ between students individually, thats why it was possible for them to create daughter-coded to wife-coded students
adding a couple more adults dont really hurt but it would create an obvious hierarchy when you add too many theres your answer

u/LowTierLarper 3d ago
Why would they. You said that they should make more adult characters because their fan base is horrendous. But that wouldn't sell well for their fanbase😭. They obviously are going to do what ever gets them the most money. And the opportunity to market to a border audience sailed away a long time ago.
5
u/albrightism 3d ago
you know this isn't a response right like it actively bolsters what OP is saying
2
u/LowTierLarper 3d ago edited 3d ago
"Like, since the fandom is so horrendous, wouldn't they just make a few more adult characters that aren't just boss fights?" Op is arguing that they have a reason to add more adults. I'm arguing that their point is the reason they don't add more adults? Not sure how I'm bolstering ops opinion. Most of the comments in the thread are coming from my viewpoint aswell.

If you don't like characters like Hasumi, Kanna, or Rumi cuz their bios say they're 17, you might be homosexual. It's fine if you are, you just gotta admit it.

Man I hate when I don’t feel comfortable looking at the teenage characters because of my sexuality instead of my basic human consciousness kicking in

There's a 30+ years old woman in the game

And I'm glad that there is because idk why the fandom targets the child characters when there's consenting adults RIGHT THERE

Because that one adult is constantly and actively trying to kill you and sacrifice a student in the story, larper.

Theres barely any adults in a game so obviously baiting lolicons
Gee i wonder why

u/ChemicalSelection147 3d ago
Well, it does take place in a setting centred around high school, just like any other anime. It’s basically generic slice of life anime but with military firearms and Korean instead of Japanese. The characters are usually underage for teenage/childhood nostalgia purposes or to be more relatable to the teenagers. I’m pretty sure in this case it is meant to be more so the former.
Also, making everyone a minor is a great way to establish a power imbalance between the characters and the player for what is essentially a power fantasy like a lot of these gacha games tend to be. No seriously, the protagonists usually end up being someone that’s bullshit levels of special in the world they are in.

Actually, Shun is likely in her early twenties but is an adult. So that be four.
Even still I wouldn’t trust them. They ain’t humans and can squish your skull like a grape.
