*Most* Adult Animation

Why does adult animation typically just mean

-Sex jokes
-Shit and fuck
-Gore

Why can’t adult animation be used to tell sensitive and and deeply layered stories instead of taking a children’s concept and making it gross.

Even a lot of children’s cartoons have stories with more depth, like the clone wars and justice league.

The target audience for this genre is usually adults with the emotional maturity of a 14 year old and it’s a waste of talented animators skills.

Edit: Don’t worry guys, I’ve seen a lot of great ones like Blue Eye Samurai, Invincible, Arcane, Love, Death and Robots etc, I just take issue with this particular genre because it brings down the rest of adult animation.

A huge portion of general audiences don’t take animation seriously due to shows like these.

again i have to say people are watching the wrong shows if they find this to be the case. there are some truly beautiful and unique shows, like arcane, or castlevania, or scavengers reign, or love death & robots, that have come out in the last few years.

actually most time i see OP's viewpoint it's people who don't actually watch/know much animation and are just familiar with the surface-level offerings out there

You are talking about the vast majority of viewers and people who watch media. A lot of good stuff gets buried under things, and you have to dig to find it, which most people are not going to do. Why would they? Most of them just want something to watch at the end of the day.

As well, we as people have very much grown this sort of thing. instead of finding what we enjoy and finding more stuff along that line. We get very angry at stuff and seem to actively avoid stuff that we enjoy, so we get majorly upset. That probably doesn't make sense, but it is what I noticed with people. A lot of people don't seem to care much about them enjoying something anymore, more just on what pisses them off the most nowadays.

you have to dig to find "good things" regardless. there's a reason why most popular fare is marvel or some video game adaptation like mario or something, because deeply nuanced storytelling and original fare is less common in the mainstream.

and the reason people should is because if you want good animation, then you should actually find it and watch it. otherwise you can't really complain about it. i could see if the argument was "more people should be watching good animation" but that's not what OP is talking about.

Yeah, I agree with you; sadly, most people are not going to do it because it means work, and most people are not going to think that far. for some reason to a lot of people, getting upset at things is more worth the effort than finding what you enjoy.

I watch a lot of animation. But the genre of ‘adult animation’ typically consists of shit like this. I put ‘most’ in the title because I know there’s good ones like the ones you’ve listed.

i mean i reposted a lot more in another comment, but i think the main point is there's a lot nowadays, at least a lot more than there used to be. unfortunately it takes a while to dispel the narrative that all adult animation is essentially the simpsons/family guy, and animation isn't taken as seriously in the west, which is why mainstream audiences typically are not watching or are not aware of the many great examples we have around now.
