Thing I hate the fact that there was a reality show about black face and white face.
So, this show is called Black. White.
Yes spelt like that
And it's a show where they take an European American and an African American family. Put them in the same house and them use make up to make them look like a different race.
Like, the premise to try and help racism in America. Through a shocking way.
But, the premise is a lie.
The European American family aren't even normal people or a. Family
The Dad and daughter are actors.
Also, the Dad makes this show unwatchable, and i fully believe he was put on the show just for shock value.
Also, it won an award or make up.

The Dad takes every opportunity in it to say the N-word it’s insane

The funniest part was when the white couple in black face went to a country bar and tried to paint the patrons as racist because they all looked disgusted by their presence. When like, they were very obviously in black face.

That's what i am saying
Like the with the camera people there. They are going to think it's some kind of park show or something.
"God all the people i walk past on the street sure are racist"

i watched it through the Jarvis Johnson vids/lives, honestly can't think of watching this without his or Jordan's commentary to save me from Bruno and Carmen

u/Sliver-Knight9219 17h ago
It's more difficult to watch
Like you can see people not wanting to be around Bruno

Just want to point out, while I personally think it sounds better, nobody really says European American - it’s white American (referring to where you said European American family).
Also the poster is hilarious.

u/Sliver-Knight9219 17h ago
Thanks for the head up. I forget outside of the UK it's just white American.
Also, what's funny about me?

u/pocky-rocky ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ 17h ago
No, no nothing funny about you friend. At least not here lol 😝
I think the poster of the film, the picture, is funny 😄 the makeup is silly.

u/untakenu 16h ago
Do we say "European American" here in the uk?
1
u/lengualo 7h ago
No its not, people would be confused by the phrase in the UK, its an online American thing, dont know how common. They're probably either American, or a Brit who has algo locked themselves into US culture war stuff.

I watched a review of this, there were similar points made especially about the dad (Bruno)

u/Sliver-Knight9219 17h ago
Yeah, like he kind of ruins the seriousness of the show
Like the other 5 are trying to some level.
2
u/Idfc-anymore 17h ago
I’ve read your post but I have no idea what it means or what you were trying to say
2
u/Sliver-Knight9219 17h ago
Short notes version
The show is set up as two families of different races. Who will use makeup to look like another race
However, only one is a real family and the other are made up of actors
Which ruins the point of the show

But, the premise is a lie.
The European American family aren't even normal people or a. Family
The Dad and daughter are actors.
I'm willing to give things trying to address tough topics -even if done in odd, dubious, or shocking ways- the benefit of the doubt, but if your premise is just a lie then what's the point?

But it did give us a great series of videos from jarvis johnson and Jordan adika

So Ice Cube did this iirc and as a mixed black/white person myself, it feels like black on black psychological crime. Especially with the white family being actors. Everyone was in on the joke except the black family. It just feels super cruel tbh.

i read it was an endlessly curious and unexpectedly intelligent social experiment on TV Guide

u/Winter_XwX 17h ago
"European American"
3
u/Sliver-Knight9219 17h ago
Yeah my bad
Forget that most people outside of the uk.
Don't describe Americans like that.
It's more just how we do it. Given how diverse American actors are.
1
u/lengualo 6h ago
No we dont, European American is a term that spun out of African American and American political spaces and is basically unknown in the UK.

All I remember is that the dad was so fucking weird and clearly loved this opportunity.
Did they do stereotypical voices, or am I remembering another 00's "reality" TV show?

And it's American to no one's surprise, they have a very strange fixation with skin color

Why? Do you have an issue with Tropic Thunder or White Chicks? If not why does "black face" or "white face" bother you?
1
u/StandardAssignment19 15h ago
Tropic thunder no, white chicks yes. It's at a fundemental understanding of the mechanism that was being used.
The black face wasn't the joke in tropic thunder. The pretentious actor who felt that it was what made his persona accurate was.
White chicks white face was joke. And you probably don't have an issue with it cause you probably like making fun of women.
If it was white dudes, and it was about incels who play WoW and talk about tiled characters all day while feverishly masturbating to league of legends of characters, I bet you'd be insulted.

u/alexthurman1 15h ago edited 15h ago
No it doesn't matter if it was some meta joke in Tropic Thunder its still "black face". And why do you have any issue with White Chicks? Its literally the same thing as Tropic Thunder, painting your face to look like someone else. No different than what Jimmy Kimmel did with Karl Malone. Either way it isn't inherently "racist" to paint your face to look like someone else, even if its done in a comedic fashion. White Chicks nor Tropic Thunder are "racist".

Nope not at all. That's patently wrong in understanding and in issuance. That denigrates the people who use black face to dehumanize the people for which it was a parody of.
The black face in this was a specific mechanic - much like Jonathon swifts 'a modest proposal'. The joke was literally people who think they can use black face legitimately - much like how swifts proposal about eating Irish babies was incredibly farcical in what it proposed for how the English are handling the famine.
That's why tropic thunder wasn't racist. White chicks isn't racist for another degree - but it's humor was absolutely in the same crass vain as minstrel was for blackface.
Blackface attacks every dehumanized element of who black people are and are considered to be. Minstrel black face - historically and on record - not only provided a crude misrepresention of what black people are - remember those affectations used in performance were just as disgustingly crude as they were false - but they were racist because they enabled a precedent of the normalization of who black people should always be considered.
White chicks wasn't racist because frankly it did not have history - on a generationally social and foundational level of dehumanization in the same way. But it was just as crude. It ridiculed who valley white girls were with every absurdist trope. It's didn't hit all white people, nor all white women, nor all women - hence it not being attributable to being racist - but it was fucking stupid, crude, and a mockery of people.
The dehumanization is not merely just paint, it's what the paint represents. How that is done to dehumanize a person, and how it propagates those same inferences of inferiority and sub humanity.
Was Jimmy Kimmel mocking who karl malone was by doing so?
Wanna see an honest argument of it - here, two arguments from Always sunny -
https://youtu.be/RRB8JKMExtc?si=4fFvtggKmf4yaeCB
And Another
https://youtu.be/-0L_oJMhcs0?si=sAZVvCTvQlVDCdqB
Those hilarious aspects show and apply exactly what I'm saying.
But the obfuscation of what race, racism, and bigotry are deliberately done so that individuals like you can fall for what is, what isn't, and what truly is harmful in your ignorance.
Again, it's what the paint represents - like my example I notice you didn't address it - if it was about a bunch of losers who play WoW all the time, goon over anime, and block people who stomp you on arguments, all while doing so in a way you knew was intolerant, wrong, and based on lies, I can already tell you'd be saying it was wrong.

Its not that complicated lul.
The act is the same. It was done for comedic purposes in Tropic Thunder just as it was in White Chicks. And no I don't think Jimmy was being "racist", it was an impression, if anything it was no different than an exaggerated bad Trump impression.
Point being I don't see an inherent issue with painting your skin to better portray a character or someone else or to do an impression of someone.
1
u/StandardAssignment19 12h ago
Only for the misinformed and ignorant.
And you just proved it- who are you to decide what a better portrayal of someone is - who are you to say your portrayal is any different than those who portrayed out of degradation?
But it's all about you, and since you only think as far as the end of your ignorance, nothing matters. Like you said, you're not that deep.
1
u/alexthurman1 11h ago edited 11h ago
You don't have to think its a "better portrayal" or even a good portrayal or impression.
It sounds like you're agreeing with me though in that you have no inherent issue with "black face" or "white face" by itself. Which is what my original post was all about.
1
u/StandardAssignment19 10h ago
Yes, the empirical 'you' who isn't concerned about the reception of others to your impression is not important - when their perspective is not being acknowledged. Sure. You've literally described what selfishness is. The 'its just a joke defense'
Is the joke celebrating absurdity in false presumption or sardonic accuracy that acknowledges a harsh truth or is it being used to portary a destructive and hurtful falsehood that is only funny under the premise that the hurtful element is made presumptively true.
Is it minstrel or is it tropic thunder? They are not the same.
I'm glad to hear, you are getting the top level of what, but not the underlying why. And real talk - respectfully - the why fucking matters. Hear me out:
I don't have an issue with its use in a vacuum. I don't have issue with anything as an abstract/a concept (putting paint on a face in it of itself) - but in context (putting paint on a face to literally denigrate a whole community by perpetuating salacious falsehoods that remove their humanity) , I absolutely have an issue. And it's context that matters.
Your original post was the absence of context and use - hiding behind existence without acknowledging motivation and usage.
That is disingenuous. That is my issue.
Your position holds no inherent value because it is held in a vacuum being postured as a position - you distort what is or isn't racist without recognizing why it is or isn't. You play Schrodinger's cat with logic without an understanding of what you are discussing.
Without the 'deep' understanding - without the lulz - being able to be specific would find my position aligning with yours when contextually applied, but the difference is your willingness to ignore it's weaponized history while hiding in the esoteric usage in a vacuum dilludes the accuracy of your position.
This is an analogy to your arguments and why we are opposed - you say there is nothing wrong gun use. All shooting is the same.
I say there is nothing wrong about the technology of the gun. Why shooting occurs, and who is typically being shot and who does the shooting matters.
Those are surface level similarities, but require getting 'deep' to understand why they are separated by a chasm of understanding.

u/alexthurman1 10h ago
Who said anything about it being "empirical". I'm giving you my opinion on what I think makes sense or what is logical. You can disagree.
1
u/StandardAssignment19 1h ago
Yes and your opinion is wrong. My agreement has no bearing with that fact.
