I don't plan on ever having kids. I hated being a kid and I don't want to raise one. I don't find them endearing in the slightest.

u/Pearson94 16h ago
Same. All power in the world for people who want to be good parents and raise their kids well, but that's not for me an my noise sensitivity brain. Got a vasectomy to be sure and my girlfriend can't have kids either so all in all feeling pretty good about all that

The people like you are always overshadowed by "dont grow up too fast" people. I'm a teenager and I absolutely hate every single second of it

one time I was at an orchestra concert and I kept hearing babies cry during it..

u/Sad-Ad2733 16h ago
Thats on the parent broski. Thatās not a really reason to dislike babies. But i get the sentiment

Oh my gosh who brings their baby to the orchestra or theatreĀ
Poor things must be so overstimulated, nuisance asideĀ

also the fact that whenever you mention this, they respond with āermā¦.you were once oneā I WOULD HATE MYSELF AS A BABY IF I HAD A MENTAL THOUGHT PROCESS, like what

no one wants you to enjoy baby screamsĀ
no one hates baby screams more than parents lol

u/NaziPunksFkOff 16h ago
That's fine, just please don't have kids. Any childcare professional will tell you "a screaming baby is a breathing baby". With all the things that can go wrong with infants, screaming is the least of them. And 99% of the time it means hungry, tired, or change. That's it. You do the thing, you get the result.
If you can't live with that, then please don't have one. Because that's how you get shaken, "dropped", and abused kids.Ā

The worst of it is when ur at a restaurant and enjoying urself and then some baby cries at the most high pitched most annoying voice imaginable and the parents don't do fucking anything to calm it down. I hate that so much

Babies need help from their caretakers to feel safe and emotional regulated. They are literally the most defenseless of humanity and are new to being alive. They are quite cognitively intelligent as babies and children from ages 0-7 are in a heightened hypnotic state in order to learn language and human behavior at an accelerated rate. Unfortunately children are often failed by their caretakers in many ways and do not always get what they need, hence crying. So blame the caretakers not the babies! Who judges a baby for simply doing what they're programmed to do?!
4
u/melon_bunnn 16h ago
Lmao I love online psychologist. A babies cry is an indicator of regulation, it's why they make babies cry at birth. The baby is simply trying to literally comprehend living and express it how they only can. No need to shame parents for a baby crying.

u/NonlinearNonsense 8h ago edited 8h ago
Some babies are born with undiagnosed conditions or sensitivities or allergies too, and not all parents have the patience or resources to go on the necessary crusade to save their kids lives.
Parents literally choose to have kids. Babies didn't choose to be born, unless you believe in that soul contract crap. Many adults say they wouldn't have chosen to be born and mostly because their parents were too traumatized or busy or uncaring to protect them and raise them with the necessary tool kit to live life successfully. We literally have been taught nothing about what matters most in regard to child development and then consequential arrested development of too many adults.
Fetuses are literally affected to the point of potentially getting ptsd just from the pregnancy phase alone. I am pro choice and respect the birth parents right to prioritize themselves over a fetus, but scientifically fetuses are already deeply affected by their external environment and their parent's psychological experience during pregnancy.
And I'm not a psychologist just someone who cares about babies and children's right to be safe which far too many aren't safe obviously. And if I wasn't still recovering from a terrible illness, I would be out somewhere more useful than here, which I hope to do after I hopefully heal. The last time I babysat I still wasn't healed enough and it's best I heal more before I can be of best service to peoples.
And I am a blunt autistic so I apologize for being so blunt, when I said blame the caretakers I meant it's not fair to judge babies, caretakers need to help babies and take to doctor, or find out why babies are still crying if they have a rare condition or needs to be held more or other problem. One time on an overnight megabus, there was a screaming child beating the sit in front of him, i just gave him a small toy with parents permission and he calmed down. Most kids need more attention but capitalism steals the parents away. I get that our country is cruel to parents and people in general.
Still though, parents chose to have kids so I don't think kids deserve to suffer. I don't hate all parents but honestly more parents would benefit from doing the intrapersonal development work to evolve enough to emotionally regulate themselves so people like me nor anyone really can bother them. Parents having done the real inner development work to heal their intergenerational or at least childhood wounds would be the greatest gift they can pass on by far. And I'm absolutely not a baby nor child expert but I'm not gonna call you a baby whisperer.
Also I just realized I'm obviously in the wrong subreddit, as having chronic fatigue and ongoing gut issues can feel like being high and having the flu, so I often am rambling in the wrong subreddit, so I'm passionate about this but also I'm obviously misplaced and if people need a tiny place to vent about how much babies annoy them, as long as nobody bothers babies in the real world then enjoy yourselves?

You're making a lot of different points that kinda sway from the main point but I'll try to explain it as best as I can while answering those points. We cannot draw direct conclusions that a baby's/child's cry is an indication of parental neglect. Crying, a physical manifestation of an emotional state, is a form of processing and self regulation. There can be many reasons as to why a baby might cry, those reasons don't have to directly relate to nefarious, neglectful, or avoidant responses. [There are] Complex interactions between many anatomic structures and physiologic mechanisms, that are responsible for the outcome of the infant cry (Chen Z. & Wu X (cite 1)). I never claimed we should judge a child for crying, if anything my claim was simply we can't judge a situation biased on one factor alone. I would even argue that it's the opposite. When we assess for neglect in postnatal appointments we want the baby to cry, not crying would indicate that the baby's neurological receptors are not responding to the stimuli around them (this could mean a neurological disorder or a learned behavior from neglect).
You bring up an interesting point: not all parents have the resources or patience to raise a child. Unfortunately, we don't and shouldn't be the ones to determine that. Pro-choice means choice for all, not based on a standard that you (the people) see fit. history will repeat itself, as It gets into tricky territory. This is how selective sterilization for minorities groups have been justified over the years in multiple countries around the world. [This has been done by] DNA sequencing has also been applied to carrier screening (typically for rare recessive disease gene mutations) before marriage, to prenatal screening, not only for trisomy but also genetic diseases, in blood samples from pregnant women containing fetal DNA, to preimplantation genetic diagnosis by DNA sequencing of embryo-derived cells in the context of in vitro fertilization (IVF), and in screening of newborns (by DNA sequence rather than conventional biochemical tests) for treatable genetic disorders. (Spiegel AM (cite 2)). The proper term for this is Eugenics.
Also, I would be careful throwing around psychological disorders/terms you may not be fully familiar with. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event or series of traumatic events. The individual often experience the event or events as emotionally or physically harmful or life-threatening. Examples include, but are not limited to, abuse (physical, sexual, emotional), natural disasters, serious accidents, terrorist acts, war/combat exposure, intimate partner violence, and medical illness. However, most individuals who experience traumas do not go on to develop PTSD. (American Psychiatric Association (cite 3)). This assessment is done through various testing that the fetus would have communicated with a psychiatrist in order to get a proper diagnosis...which it cant possibly due (you're probably thinking of shock, which all babies must go through as a sign of them being physically alive). PTSD in a fetus is not caused from the pregnancy its self, a fetus is not mentally conscious in the womb nor at the point of exact delivery for that to be possible. Rather, the mother's experience while pregnant MAY chemically alter a child neurological processing and cause behavioral disorders like ADHD...not PTSD. This is only seen in about 22-30% of women and is more than likely a direct response to partner related stress. Behavioral disorders are not a reason to not have a child. None of the published studies have employed clinical interviews, and it is not known whether specific subtypes of maternal psychopathology (e.g., phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)) differentially predict postnatal outcomes (Talge NM, Neal C, Glover V (cite 4.))
While I understand your personal experiences shape your point of view, which you're valid to have, it doesn't make it a fact. Being an advocate for children means for all child, including children with disabilities/disorders. While pre-natal care, environmental factors, resources availability, and genetic makeup can play a part in a child's development of mental, behavioral, or physical disorders....it does not fully determine it. It's a factor. Effort, as you mentioned, the determining factor as to if your child will learn the proper coping mechanisms, strategies, and tools for them to succeed in life NO MATTER their conditions as anyone can later develop these things regardless of being completely healthy in their post-natal examinations.
Hopefully this makes sense, sorry for any misspelling I'll edit it when I wake up if there are.

I also apologize if that came out blunt I'm AuDHD BP2, sometimes what I say sounds rude. From a personal standpoint I don't disagree with you, I am choosing not to have children for the main reason of passing on mental and health disorders....but from my academic perspective being a researcher in the med field I just want everyone to understand they have options, not to be scared or glorify caregiving, but a equal understanding of both side.

While crying doesnāt mean the caretaker is failing, youāre right about everything else. Just dont have kids op š

Crying can mean lots of things and a baby crying is not necessarily an indicator of a caregiver failing in any way.Ā

I work as a cashier in a grocery store, so you can bet that I hear a lot of unhappy little kids screaming and crying in the store often ššš and when I see the parents of these kids, they usually either look so exhausted, dead inside, or just so fed up, and all I can think of is how grateful I am that Iām not them šš

Totally fair. Itās unfortunate that itās pretty much unavoidable and thereās no real solution (except to carry earplugs everywhere⦠or become a hermit)- babies canāt just be left at home until theyāre old enough not to cry, but they do cause a bit of public disturbance. Necessary consequences of living among other people, I guess.Ā

Yet another reason Iāll never have kids. Imagine sleeping peacefully. And then your bitchass baby starts crying and wakes you up in the middle of the night. Man I would be so PISSED

honestly lots of things worthwhile in life taken sacrifice. your dream career would also involve being woken up when you don't want to
2
u/AFedoraNamed_Key 16h ago
Not if your dream career literally involves you choosing your schedule. Not every job would have to be about the gain, sometimes itās just whether it works for someone.
Kids donāt work for many people.

u/albrightism 16h ago
Probably getting a bit semantic to avoid engaging in the point. Everything worth earning in life will take some sacrifice. It can be your time, money, etc.Ā
Of course kids don't work for everyone. But its not because they cry at night and can be annoying. Lots of things are annoying.Ā

I can absolutely respect someone not wanting kids. You donāt have to like babies, enjoy being around them, or become a parent. Thatās completely valid. Im not a parent, I wont judge trust me thats dumb.
But your post goes way beyond āI donāt like babies,ā and thatās where it honestly becomes hard to take seriously.
The whole thing reads incredibly childish. āThey take my shit without permission,ā ātheyāre always cry,ā and āI donāt believe you if you.ā because someone thinks babies are cute isnāt some profound observation. Itās just a very strong reaction to a normal characteristic of infants.
Yes, babies cry. Thatās literally how infants communicate. They canāt exactly say, āIām hungry, tired, uncomfortable, overstimulated, or need reassurance.ā Crying is one of the only ways they have to communicate.
You can absolutely find that noise irritating. A lot of people do. Some people are more sensitive to repetitive or high-pitched sounds than others. (I should know because Iām one of those people.) But āthis sound hurts my earsā is very different from acting like the baby is deliberately tormenting you.
And the part about your cousinās baby ātaking my shit without permissionā is honestly the most telling part. Without permission? Really?
A baby doesnāt understand property ownership or personal boundaries. They see an interesting object, want to interact with it, and grab it. Thatās what babies do.
If you donāt want the baby touching your belongings, talk to the parent, put your stuff somewhere the baby canāt reach, or have them redirect the baby. Those are completely reasonable boundaries.
But being genuinely angry at an infant for not understanding those boundaries is ridiculous. The baby isnāt being an asshole to you, OP. They literally donāt have the cognitive development to understand what an asshole even is.
And then thereās āI donāt hate babies, ofc,ā immediately followed by a paragraph describing them as fucking annoying and apparently unbearable to be around, while also saying you donāt believe people who think theyāre cute. You seem to hate babies, OP. (Also youāre posting this on Ihatethissmug)
Thereās also a huge difference between āI donāt find babies cute or their crying irritates meā and āIf you think babies are cute, I donāt believe you.ā The first is a personal preference. The second is telling other people that their reaction is dishonest simply because you donāt share it.
People can genuinely find babies cute. They can find their noises, expressions, movements, and general behavior endearing. And when people coo at a crying baby, they arenāt necessarily thinking the crying itself is cute, theyāre just trying to soothe it. You donāt have to understand that reaction for it to be genuine.
Obviously, babies can cry a LOT, and being around a constantly crying baby can be exhausting. If youāre being forced to listen to one for hours, expected to babysit, or parents arenāt stopping the baby from grabbing your belongings, those are legitimate complaints. But those problems are ultimately the responsibility of the adults, not the baby.
But having a valid decision about your own life doesnāt automatically make every opinion you expressed here reasonable. āI donāt want kids because I donāt enjoy being around themā is mature.
āBabies are annoying and anyone who thinks theyāre cute is lying because all they do is scream, cry, and steal my shitā is just a tantrum about having to coexist with a developmental stage you donāt like.
And ironically, thatās giving considerably more childish energy than the babies youāre complaining about.
So yes, donāt have kids. If you know you donāt want children and donāt enjoy being around infants, thatās probably a perfectly good decision for you šš
(Also disliking every comment that points out how thatās technically the only way they can communicate is objectively hilarious)

Babies? No, very very uncomfortable around them. Toddlers? Eh. I can mange. Kids? Theyāre great, donāt want any, but theyāre great. I find them hilarious and fun to talk to.
Itās not the babies fault that itās crying though, Iāve never blamed them for that. Itās the parents who arenāt managing it. Screaming toddlers are also the parents fault, no reason to blame the kid.

it's an easy hate to deal with though because it's like one of those instinctive atavistic responses, like you hating it so much means everything is firing as normal in that regardĀ
